Around SBN: Clippers Need To Realize That Spurs Are The Anti-Grizzlies

Jesse Joensuu and Matt Martin have been reassigned to Bridgeport.

The Isles have games Saturday and Sunday, but the Olympic roster freeze begins Friday at 3 p.m. We enjoyed this look, boys. See you again soon.Edit: It may be just a paper move (a very cheap one, if so); looking for verification on whether the freeze affects minor call-ups.

as expected, but...

look at the bright side, sim gets right back in there…

why isn't #16 hanging in the rafters?

One or both of them could be back for the next game.
WTH does she know?
Seriously.

Let Us Go, Islanders! (Ever notice how strange that sounds without the contraction?)

Probably not. I think the organization wants Martin and JJ to play in Bridgeport for the two weeks of the Olympic break, if they were on the roster after 3 PM tomorrow, they would be ineligible to play in the AHL during the break. I have a feeling they’ll both be back once the freeze is lifted.

Botta on twitter about Martin and JJ

I suspect Martin and Joensuu’s “demotion” is for roster, salary and salary cap purposes, with the Islanders not playing until Saturday.

Yep.

Which is amazing to me. They make so little money even at NHL salary, we’re talking just two days of “savings,” and the team is light years away from pushing the cap. If this is the case and motivation, it’s shaving pennies and looks ridiculously cheap.

They all do it, though… not just the Isles.

I just think it sends the wrong message. It’s one thing if you’re trying to squeeze under the cap — then there is a team-oriented greater goal. But if you’re on the cap floor and wrangling over a few thousand dollars for a guy that rides the bus…ack, it just doesn’t sit well with me.

I dont think it sends much of a message at all. I think most people dont even think about it, we only know because we are so plugged into what the team does. If you plug into another team, they are doing the same stuff… and if everyone does it, how wrong can the message really be? Thats all I meant.

Its still a LOT better than the Isles screwing Luongo out of a huge chunk of bonus money by refusing to keep him up for one more game.

You’re right, it’s no Luongo move! And I don’t think it’s a big deal. I just mean the message specifically to JJ and Martin: “We want you here to get your NHL career underway. Just remember at every opportunity we will shave a few thousand off your paycheck — even if you’re in all other respects still with the NHL squad. Remember that when free agency hits.”

Cynicism averted

Botta wrote this:

By "sending" Matt Martin and Jesse Joensuu "to Bridgeport" yesterday, the youngsters can actually be sent to the AHL after the Islanders play Ottawa on Sunday.
…which I’m wondering, does that mean there was some sort of emergency condition that would have become a regular call-up if it lasted more than X days — or they hadn’t “sent” them back down first?

CBA, for the win!

I believe the freeze does effect call ups

they would have been stuck on a frozen roster as of Today if I am to understand things right. that said, then it is the right move to send them down to play these 2 weeks, and bring them up when action returns

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
