Witt lays into Gordon for Botta/SNY. Very interesting for the coach-player dynamic; but Witt is mistaken if he thinks his career was sidetracked by a coach and not by his quite-evident decline.

Does Witt make those comments if Gordon is still the coach? Does Botta do this interview if he still has his credentials?

In a two part equation

Witt would never have the opportunity to make his comments if Botta has his credentials, (if you remember, a couple of weeks ago, Botta was defending everything Gordon), but if anybody asked, I’m sure he would fess up. Botta now doing anything to stay relevant…controversy sells!

And Botta wonders why some people don’t take him seriously… One question along the lines of “If it was all Gordon, why hasn’t anyone taken a chance on you?” or “What about the fact you lost a step over the past couple of years?” or “Did your physical demanding style of play play a role in your decline?” Instead we get “Well, we’ll try and get you a chance to play 1,000 NHL games Brendan!”

Did you notice at the end

that he tells Witt that he knows what it’s like when these things get personal and Witt agrees with him too much? Ruined it for me right there…let’s pick a guy that allows me to insert myself into the story. He is using a back and forth methodology here of getting guys that are very pro -islander to very anti islander to create a type of fan-base Stockholm syndrome.

Same here. I find it bitter now. Sad as it was a great source of info. But you know what, I wish the guy well. I hope he becomes an NHL guy for FNY or whoever he’s hooked up with. Biggest loss would be I get the breaking news of deals and FA signings 10 minutes later from TSN. Oh well…. Then again this is the Isles where deals and FA singings aren’t really occurrences, so, no big loss.

And today's Botta tweet

“ChrisBottaNHL Will be contributing to Slap Shot, the hockey blog of the New York Times. Very thankful for the opportunity and to the readers.”

Wonder how that happened??

Take Botta out of the equation for a second...

… and think of the possiblities.
I agree with all that has been said about Botta’s motivations, and stirring shit instead of trying to find NEWS elsewhere. But this is something relevant. This team needed and still needs VETERAN LEADERSHIP.
I hate to harp on it, but the guys in control have consistently put their confidence in the WRONG PEOPLE. I listen to Witt, we all knwo the story of Guerin and just read Comeau with Bourne… it’s the same crap.
Snow says, “I have a square, would you like an opportunity to coach it”
Gordon, “Yes… but I may need to round the edges”
Snow, “Okay… but I really don’t have too much access to free agents and it’s gonna be tough to find round players”
Gordon “Don’t worry about it… by the time I’m through with them they’ll be round.”
Guerin contributed to a cup winner… he was a big contributer… but he wasn’t Scott Gordon material because he brought his bizzilion NHL games experience to the table and was a CAPTAIN.. and DID WHAT A CAPTAIN WAS SUPPOSED TO DO.
Witt wore the “A”… and they BOTH told him the EMPEROR WAS BUCK ASS NAKED… well…
Now we’re all gonna turn on Witter because he lost a step… NOT ME!!!
Look at the shitcan we’re in… I can’t blame that on Witter losing a step, but I can definitely say that one stubborn, unflexible coach can lose a young team and have double digit losing streaks every year.
The one ray of hope is that BOTH Comeau and Witter have said they agree with Cappy’s style… and that at least gives me hope that this isn’t going to be the same old same old.

Totally agree

Not in denial about the Gordon stuff…I just think it’s cringe worthy patheticness when it’s Botta doing it. I would have liked to have seen this come from any other blogger or MSM outlet.

as far as I can tell (googling Brendan Witt retired) he still isn’t officially retired. I don’t exactly see teams knocking down his door…

lol yea

he couldnt/didnt skate his last two seasons on the team… great your a warrior out there willing to do anything for your team but theres a difference betweeen an NHL warrior like Chris Pronger and an AHL warrior in witt… it was pathetic watching him play and its pathetic seeing how dillusional he is off the ice. Even if he was having problems with the coach he was still getting tons of ice-time when considering his awefull play so he needs to get over it

I was convinced he was injured the whole last season. Turns out he was just getting old.

Holy LHH...

I don’t do IPB that often and must have missed this yesterday. There’s no doubt that Brendan’s skills had deteriorated under Gordon, but were we all blind to the game he was being forced to play. God, I don’t know how many times I posted on IPB that, “THIS TEAM WILL NEVER WIN WITH BRENDAN WITT BELOW THE OFFENSIVE GOAL LINE….NEVER”
Did we all forget what happened to Guerin?
I wonder if Rob carlin sits next to him when he’s at the colly.
The more I read about Scott Gordon, the more I find myself vindicated. It was his way, or the highway. THAT WORKS WHEN YOUR WAY WORKS… he ain’t done SHIT… he may never do shit with an attitude like that.
Give me Guerin and Witt anyday. Putz!
Not to mention… who was right… totally new defense… same result… even worse results. Hopefully Charles put the coffee maker back in the team suite at games, otherwise his visits will be awfully cold.

Did we all forget what happened to Guerin?

Likable vet with intermittent effort and 20-goal ability when given choice minutes? I think he saw the direction of the league and his chance at another contract and said, “Eastern contender, please!” He’s not really a martyr in my book.

This is coming from someone who always liked him, thought he was the right (if surprising) choice for captain to help start a new post-Yashin slate, and defended him even when he sleep-walked through games under Nolan and Gordon. But I think he was looking out for #1.

Guerin also supposedly had offers from other teams this offseason, but was only willing to sign with another contender.

And that is why he is hosting HNL instead of being in the highlights.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
