Didn't think there would be any takers. They might by him out now.

Jesse can still prove himself! And Reese too, but reese has looked like a depth man this year.

I’ve never expected him to be more ever.

I know all the time, just stating even lately he hasn't looked nhl caliber.

reese again?

what happened to kohn and katic? are they still in the picture? are they still hurt?
i thought kohn at least looked pretty competent last year.

by dose on Dec 30, 2010 12:51 PM EST reply actions

Kohn still isn't cleared from injury

Katic is playing again. Maybe since this is a 7th-man recall, they’d rather Katic keep getting ice time.

i think joensuu ...

is getting near the point where he REALLY has to show something.

by dose on Dec 30, 2010 12:55 PM EST reply actions

I think he has

He’s just a step behind NHL talent, a guy who can get it done in the AHL but not in the big league.

I'll take JJ and Reese over Sim and Bruno any day

I know that’s not why this was done but it’s beginnin to be painful watching those 2 play.

by RobsMustard on Dec 30, 2010 12:59 PM EST via mobile reply actions

JJ and Reese are no where near Sim and Bruno.

Sim has 8 GP in BP, 7 G 2 A for 9 Pts
JJ has 18 GP in BP, 4 G, 7 A for 11 Pts

If you can’t outplay Sim in the AHL, you can’t outplay him in the NHL.

And the reason Reese goes back and forth is that no one would bother claiming him off Waivers. Someone might claim Bruno on Waivers.

Pretty sure Gervais would be claimed by someone too.

I think its definitely possible.

Let Us Go, Islanders! (Ever notice how strange that sounds without the contraction?)

FFM instead of FMIV

I think reese is there so the Islanders can build their frequent flyer miles, and they don’t want to get caught with 5 defenseman on road trips anymore. That was a disaster last time.
Jesse is a good call-up. He has proven he can play either wing, and you’re really not hurting anything by having him in the press box for a few weeks. JJ can step in if any of the 12 forwards go down because there is so little difference from level to level… they can just slide a piece one way or the other and they are whole again.

Wanna scratch Gillies… you have Martin-Zeke-JJ
Schremp gets hurt in Detroit… Bailey centers that line and you have Grabs-frans-JJ
Moulson has bitter beer face… Bailey-JT-PAP… see above.

Good moves.

Better move… they signed Freddy Meyer over the summer and their defense would look a whole lot better… to me anyway.

I sometimes wonder how much influence the coach has over who gets called up.

Cappy should know all the potential call-ups fairly well, after all. Food for thought, perhaps?

I'd think so

I have a feeling that Reese is going to.....

…..have a MUCH better time of it on this trip with the relative stabilization happening these last 7 games, as compared to the previous visit – Dylan may indeed be a more valuable asset, just as he seemed to demonstrate (at least to ME) late last season…..

by ogam5 on Dec 30, 2010 1:49 PM EST reply actions

He hasn’t been playing that well in the AHL this season, where lately he’s fallen behind Wes O’Neill in the pecking order. I think Dom was right above, this is purely insurance on a long road trip as the 7th defenseman while letting Kohn heal and Katic get ice time.

I think I caught Reese’s problem in the game thread the other day. Last season he played 80% of the time with Freddy Meyer, and FMIV did a good job babysitting him.

The problem with Reese is that he's an ok offensive defenseman that can't get his defense right. Kind of like an all around worse wiz.

I would actually compare him more to a poor man’s Hillen. They both could play well if they just aloowed themselves to react to plays rather than over thinking things. Reese is a smart guy, even as an athlete you have to have a semblance of a brain to be at Harvard for four years, and I think that has been to hi disadvantage this season.

I just think

FMIV had some good chemistry with him, or did a good job babysitting him, meanwhile he’s spend 62% of his shifts this year with Bruno. And we usually say Bruno needs a babysitter…

If you had to say,

where do you think his weakness is, David? I’m curious; believe he played in both rookie games against Boston (could be wrong) and thought he acquitted himself well in the sole Bridgeport/Springfield game I saw almost a month ago (another one coming up in about a month)…..

by ogam5 on Dec 30, 2010 2:07 PM EST reply actions

This year in particular he’s been very hesitant in the games I’ve seen (I’ve watched about 10-12 games on line), in that he’s been reluctant to use his body, and hasn’t been moving the puck out of the defensive zone as well as he was last year. He might be going through the “Hillen” of thinking too much instead of reacting.

I get the same impression from this year’s NHL games. Thought he was a seasoned minor pro who could fill in after last year’s callup, but that was not what I saw this year.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
