Bridgeport and Prospect Roundup 11/28

Guess which goalies started this week and who sat? Answer at the end.

This week at Bridgeport they decided 60 minutes just wasn't enough. All three games have gone to the extra period, with two of them going to the shootout. Unfortunately they only came away with a win in one of the shootouts. All three goalies played well though, considering the patchwork defense as only Mark Wotton and Anton Klementyev remain of the season starters.

On Wensday against Providence, Jon Landry [Rhett Rakhshani, Jon Sim] scored his first AHL goal in two years to tie the game. They lost in OT, but Kevin Poulin was named 2nd Star with 30 saves on 32 shots. On Friday former Islander draftee (2004 4th Round) Wes O'Neil played the hero. Down 3-0 against Connecticut in the 3rd with under 10 minutes remaining, O'Neil scored on a penalty shot. Rakhshani [Josh Bailey, J. Landry] scored 21 seconds later and with under 2 minutes O'Neil scored again [Bailey, Rakhshani] to tie the game and bring BP all the way back. Jeremy Colliton scored in the 7th round of the shootout for the win, and he also captured the first star. O'Neil got the second star and Bailey the 3rd star. Mikko Kosikinen had 29 saves on 32 shots and blanked CT in the shootout.

Playing Connecticut last night, but playing The Whale instead of the Wolfpack, BP should consider itself lucky it got to the shootout[Video of the return of the Whale]. Nathan Lawson had a huge game making 43 saves on 45 shots and grabbing the third star. Rakhshani [Micheal Haley, Tony Romano] Klementyev [David Ullstrom, Chris Blight] scored for BP. This afternoon they face Norfolk at home as they try to get back to .500 (9-11-1-1).

Star-divide

Natural Born Kirills

Kirill Petrov had another quiet week, finishing +2 on the week but adding no points. He's at 20 GP, 4 G, 6 A, 10 Points and +1 for the seasknb

Kirill Kabanov had a big week. On Wednesday he scored two goals in a 7-4 win for Lewiston. On Friday he had an assist and scored in the shootout to get first star honors and help Lewiston to a 3-2 Shootout win.

I should start calling them the Unbalanced Kirills, it seems like whenever one is having a few good games, the other isn't.

WHL, OHL, NCAA and Europe

Nino Niederreiter added a goal and an assist in three games this week for Portland. He has 14 points (7 G, 7 A) in 15 games. Nino's goal looked like it was from Moulson's office [video:Nino's Goal].

David Toews had a goal and an assist in 4 games for the Wheat Kings. On the night the Wheat Kings were beaten 7-1, he managed to be one of the few not to finish the game in the negative. In 19 games he has 5 G, 8 A, 13 Pts and a -6.

Tony DeHart scored his second goal of the season, but despite out shooting and out chancing Windsor, Oshawa fell 5-2 [Video]. Calvin De Haan had an assist last night in Oshawa's 3-2 shootout win over Sarnia. Dehart has 23 GP, 2 G, 11 A, 13 Pts +11 while De Haan has 20 points (2 G, 18 A) in 20 games and +9.

Casey Cizikas is one of the reasons that Mississauga has won 14 of their last 15 with only a shootout loss and are in first in the OHL. Last night Mississauga scored 7 goals and hit five posts against Barrie. Cizikas had a goal and two assists in the game, and took second star. On the year Cizikas has 12 G, 16 A, 28 Pts in 22 games and a +17. Captain Cizikas has also been standing up for his teammates, getting in two fights recently [Video, Video].

Anders Lee and Notre Dame played two games this week. Lee added an assist and is now 15 GP, 9 G, 3 A, 12 Points. [Audio:Anders Lee interview with USHL Radio]

Matt Donovan had an assist in two games this week for Denver. In 16 games he has 4 G, 7 A and 11 Points this season.

The University of North Dakota played two games against Notre Dame this week. They won the first game 6-3 and Jason Gregoire captured the first star with 2 goals and an assist. Gregoire was held off the score sheet in the following nights 2-2 tie. Brock Nelson didn't score, but did finish the weekend +1 and had three shots on goal. Gregoire has 16 games played a 6 G, 7 A, 13 points while Nelson has 1 G, 4 A, 5 Points in 16 games this year. [Video: Gregoire Goal Vs Wisconsion, More video from UND Vs Wisconsin]

Jason Clark played both games this weekend for Wisconsin, but did not get on the scoresheet. He still has one assist on the season

Aaron Ness had one game this week, and didn't add to his season total of 7 Assists for Minnesota.

Boston U played one game this week and Corey Trivino didn't add to his totals. He has 2 G, 5 A, 7 Pts in 11 games.

Brian Day picked up a goal and an assist this week for Colgate in two games. In 12 games he has 6 G, 4 A, 10 Pts.

UNH's Blake Kessel had a goal and an assist in two games. He has 13 GP, 2 G, 8 A, 10 points. [Video: UNH Vs Brown, Kessel has an Assist and Goal]

Lulea went 2-1 this week, but Anders Nilsson spent the week on the bench.

Someone must read this site, because they freed Cody Rosen! Rosen started (So he might have been promoted to backup after the former backups poor outing) and had 32 saves on 34 Shots. No video, but the Clarkson website does have a picture and some audio highlights. [Video: Cody Rosen Interview]

So I guess we have to start a Free Nilsson campaign now. Also Vote For Frans! We're only 100K'ish behind #Vote4Frans

How bad is the BP Defense?

I normally don’t first comment my own posts, but I didn’t realize that Jon Landry was in the SB Database. He hasn’t had anything written on him since Sept 09 (Bluejackets released him at the end of camp) and his movement hasn’t been noted on his profile (signing with Kalmazoo and then being promoted to BP) since March of 2009. And he’s still listed as part of the Bluejackets organization.

Crazy

I guess it’s good they’ve managed what they have with a blueline like that; do they even known each others’ names?

Happy for him

The team lost, but certainly not because of goaltending.

Let Us Go, Islanders! (Ever notice how strange that sounds without the contraction?)

Also: OT but sorta related

Kind of cool to see Mauldin finally getting a chance and getting some love for the Avs.

nice, it’s too bad he’s a center, the one thing we don’t need anymore of.

I was going to ignore it cause I saw it was USHL radio, I thought it was over a year old. But in the Description it said USHL Alumni and I gave it a listen and realized it was from a week or so ago.

Everyone should read the article I linked on my fanshot about Kirill Kabanov

Not only is he playing well, but he is fitting in very well and his new coach is raving about him. If this continues, I would not be surprised to see him on the Island next year, playing on the second line with Nino and Josh.

by BCISLEMAN on Nov 28, 2010 4:52 PM EST reply actions

is that a little too optimistic? even if he behaves, wouldnt he need at least a few months in bridgeport?

by Lakewood Islander on Nov 28, 2010 10:39 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Don't believe he can play in Bridgeport as he will still be too young

and his issue has never been ability to compete but ability to keep focused on what he needs to do. Presumably he will be bulking up a bit this year and, if he can keep his nose clean, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him given the nine day trial and, if he proves himself, making the roster and scoring goals.

Bridgeport 3 - Norfolk 0

Bailey was out with what Fornabaio called a “pectoral strain” he picked up last night, joining Katic, Kohn, Hilbert and Wotton among their walking wounded. Wotton has been playing injured out of necessity. Eric Castonguay gets called up from Reading of the ECHL. Between players getting called up to NVMC and their own injuries, Bridgeport looks more like an ECHL team right now than an AHL team. In the past two weeks they’ve had to call up seven players from the ECHL (O’Niell, Svendsen, Freisen, LaBelle, Blight, Campbell and Castonguay).

Kevin Poulin was the star this afternoon, stopped all 40 Norfolk shots he faced. Wow.

Bridgeport Goals:

Ullstrom (Unassisted)
Castonguay (Blight and Ullstrom)
Blight, EN (Svendsen)

Ullstrom had a strong game after struggling this past week with an injury (Surprise!). Hopefully he can pick his game back up a bit and considering Hunter’s injury is long term if he has a strong couple of weeks coming up he might be the long term solution in Hunter’s spot.

crazy the way the goalies have been holding the fort. They are doing better without the defense in front of them

Yeah, all three of them. It’s crazy, but a really good sign that they are that resilient.

Really like these roundups

Hard to know what to make of Cizikas. He has decent numbers, but then again he’s over-age and this is his fourth year of juniors.

by AP77 on Nov 28, 2010 6:21 PM EST reply actions

He’s 19, same age as De Haan. He’s not overaged; an overaged player in the CHL is someone who starts the season as a 20 year old. There is no where else for him to play this season outside of the NHL in North America as he is too young for the AHL.

Fair enough re: his age, but this is his fourth full year of juniors. Ideally, you’d like to see him dominating more than he has.

by AP77 on Nov 28, 2010 7:19 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t watch the games, but he’s captain of his team, 2nd in points on the team, and a big part of why they are 1st in the OHL when I wrote this earlier today.

He also looked good in the Subway series from all reports. He’s also improved every year in juniors, and is currently on a pace for almost 90 points.

At the very least he might make a good trade piece, considering he’s a center.

Large numbers don’t really equal dominating in the juniors, nor do they translate into being a good NHL player. Would you say Justin Mapletoft or Justin DiBenedetto are dominant forces? Mapletoft (120 point in his 4th WHL year) and DiBenedetto (93 points in his 4th and 5th OHL years) put up what you would consider dominant stats but are far from impact players at the next level. What you want from Cizikas at this point is a solid two way game and physicality he has shown, as he’s already proven he can score at the OHL level.

It is of course true that great numbers in juniors don’t necessarily translate into the NHL, but it is also the case that not very great numbers in juniors . . . doesn’t bode well for being a good NHL player either.

by AP77 on Nov 28, 2010 7:35 PM EST up reply actions

Cizikas is making a case for being a good 3rd or 4th line center

He’s never going to be an Anders Lee, but he may still be quite good.

by BCISLEMAN on Nov 28, 2010 7:37 PM EST up reply actions

Don’t know what to expect either. I guess an optimist view would be that he almost had a lost year in juniors/development thanks to the legal situation he faced. I’ll settle for smart all-around NHLer if he can become that.

plus 18 A in 20 games is awesome. he seems on pace for the Isles next season

Cizikas & CDH invited to Canadian Juniors camp.

CDH should be a near guarantee to get a spot. Hopefully Casey can have a good camp and join him at the WJC.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
