"I watched my teammate ask a guy to fight, and Avery turned around, said no, next shift," said the Oilers’ Theo Peckham, referring to an exchange between Avery and Edmonton defenseman Ladislav Smid at 11 minutes 18 seconds of the third period. "And as soon as Smiddy turned away, Avery sucker-punched him.
"Then he skated by our bench, laughing," added Peckham, who racked up 27 minutes in penalties during the melee that ensued.
Avery was unavailable to comment after the game.
