Knee-jerking reactions: What to make of the first-place Islanders?

Let's recap: Mark Streit injured, Kyle Okposo injured, Rob Schremp injured, John Tavares concussed, James Wisniewski suspended, Trent Hunter banged up, Blake Comeau banged up, Josh Bailey injured...Islanders in first place?

What's going on here?

If you consider KO, RSH, JT, JB and Streit five of the Islanders' 11 most talented skaters (I'd use Matt Moulson, Frans Nielsen, Hunts, Andy Macdonald, the Wiz and Doug Weight to round out the group), they've yet to field any more than 5-7 of their core at any point this season for a full game.

Coming into the season, I believed this team was talented in the right places and capable of surprising, but precariously thin and vulnerable to a rash of injuries.

Seriously; I want to hear some theories, and some conjecture.

1.) Can you explain what's happened here?

2.) How long could this spike in play continue?

3.) Has this small sample of surprising strength (Alliterative analysis: BOOM!) changed your expectations for the rest of 2010-11?
