An Awesome Tribute from one of the classiest guys in the game

“Roli the Goalie” never disappoints. Really awesome tribute to two of the Isles greats. Hope that the new mask brings Roli and the team good luck. I can’t wait for the game tonight. It should be a doozy.

Billy Smith

One if my all time favorites. To me and my brother he was the original chuck Norris. We would always be like “if Billy fought …… Who would win”. Also I played little league on his kids baseball team. I remember the day he came out and hit fly balls to us. His exact words before starting " I’m gonna hit you guys some balls and every time one of you little farts misses one he owes me a beer". Lol. Good times.

Haha nice.

Timeless, and somehow not at all surprising.

LOL

Who knew that Mr. Buttermaker was based partially on real life events? But he DID amend himself to call you “farts” instead of worse. See, Smitty is ALL about the children.

Great Mask, but I never want to see DP in the Pink Glove/Blocker and Pads combo.

(1) Just to complain (Newpspaper Editor family), the caption on the Billy Smith side is wrong.

(2) Dear God, did Chico really wear that?

(3) Love the mask.

It says the guy on the OTHER side is Billy Smith.

Obviously, you’re looking at Billy Smith and the guy on the OTHER side is Chico.

love the new gear

Roli’s mask is spectacular. I also like DP’s pads, I know it’s pink, but it’s for a good cause and it’s a very distracting color to a shooter.

by ArsenalLI on Oct 18, 2010 3:05 PM EDT reply actions

Ha, I actually wondered about that distraction. I mean you just don’t see pink out there at all. Alternatively, it could help shooters focus on what to avoid, like Fleury’s yellow pads.

DP…using every trick he can while working his way back.

Actually, I think this have something to do with it, a 12 year old kid name Kelly Ryan was killed earlier this year, and apparently it was his dream to be an NHL player:

“Kelly was killed the other night a few blocks from home on his bicycle when a driver made a turn and struck him at the intersection of 60th and Narrangansett in Chicago…..
Kelly collected anything hockey that he could involving goalies and because of his dad’s ties, had made a relationship with Islanders goalie Dwayne Roloson, who took Kelly on the team bus once to get autographs when Rolo was a member of the Oilers.”

by Les Beaver on Oct 18, 2010 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions

wow, that's awesome

not that the kid was killed, obviously, that’s a tragedy, but that Roloson had developed a relationship with him and is dedicating his helmet to him. I’m glad I’m not a Rangers fan (I mean, aren’t we all?), b/c Roli makes it real hard to root against him.

Kelly was also a goalie

Hey folks, my first time posting – really enjoy this site. I’ve been following Roli’s career since he joined the Oilers, he’s a pretty inspiring and amazing guy, love watching him play and hope he keeps going for a few more years. Absolutely love this mask – I’m assuming it’s another Promasque creation.

Found out tonight on IM this boy Kelly Ryan was a young goalie whom Roli taught at his summer goalie camp in Simcoe. He and Bob Mason (Wild’s goalie coach) dedicated this summer’s camp to Ryan, have a trophy in his memory, etc. The story is here: http://www.simcoereformer.ca/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=2680111

Difference between Rollie & DP Mask?

Rollie was actually around to see Smith & Resch play…it’s classy because it’s a nod to those before him in a great club

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
