Around SBN: The End Of Sabanball: Details, Barbarians, And Precision

"I haven't ever been through something like that in my career," Tavares said. "Doug really helped me through it. He'd tell me about all the times that he was feeling good or slumping and how sometimes even when you are playing well, the pucks just aren't bouncing. It's amazing how much we think the same about the game. We do a lot of sitting around and talking, and it's really helped me."

I am not worried

He has been playing well..he makes some bad passes to the front of the net, but he is trying to hard to create but there is very little open space when he is on the ice. He seems to get to a lot of pucks behind the net, and he battles on the forecheck, but he hasnt been able to finish the last month. I have seen a good 6 pretty open nets he has missed, and it is the pressure of not getting a goal that is causing him to choke. once 1 falls more will come, similar to Okposo earlier in the year

Agreed, I’m not worried about JT. I thought his comments on Weight were interesting. People are ripping Weight’s on-ice performance, but I’d counter that a) his minutes make him a better 3rd/4th-liner than most, while his veteran presence for JT will probably pay dividends down the road.

I have always been a big fan of Doug Weight as an Islander. To the point that I think, contrary to some here that he is worth re-upping for another season, if he can be gotten at a realistic price, recognizing his limited on-ice role. JT is going to need more than one season of learning how to be the great professional we all know he will be, and Weight is as good a teacher as I can think of. If, of course, he wants to be traded to a contender at the deadline, he should be given that opportunity, but I’d love to see another season out of him, with a move to some off ice role after he feels he’s done.

For me it depends on how the rest of the year goes and what (if any) other depth emerges. His health history makes me think next year might be too much — though I won’t be complaining if he re-ups.

But the best sign about Weight is he’s realistically accepted a diminished role. He’s not currently under any illusions of being first-line center or the like, and that’s one of the bigger must-haves for a once-storied veteran playing the low-minute leader role. Not to many guys in his situation handle it so gracefully.
