Follow Up on Isles Prospect Bobby Hughes' Legal Issues

Some follow up to the November 2009 arrest of Islanders prospect Bobby Hughes via today's Albany Times Union.

Apparently Bobby Hughes has rejected a plea deal for a third-degree sexual assault charge which would've garnered him two years in jail, plus 10 years of post-release supervision.  Hughes' attorney, Robert Molloy, was quoted as saying "the deal was rejected because no criminal act occurred".

Bobby Hughes is now playing for the ECHL's Utah Grizzlies.

don't know the facts

but if he is innocent, I hope he can get his career on track and have his name cleared. It is so hard for guys to prove if it was consentual

if he is guilty I hope he never plays anothe rgame, I can’t stand violence against women/children

I didn’t see much about facts in the articles I had read, just that he has been charged with sexual assault stemming from a 2008 incident. If he is innocent, I’d also like to see his career get on track. He had a good junior career, but hasn’t been able to translate that success to minor league hockey.

If he is indeed guilty, I think he was foolish not to take the plea deal. Two years in jail would’ve been easier to handle than 25 years in the slammer, plus he could feasibly play hockey after the two years is up. On the other hand, very few people play pro hockey when they’re 47 years old.

Interesting

Thanks for the update. Agreed — if he’s innocent, what a tough choice that is with the risk involved in rejecting the plea. If he’s guilty, his lawyer must think there’s not enough evidence to convict.

Talk about an awful situation for all involved. Yikes.

I’ve got a friend whose a PD in Colorado and this is his opinion.

if he said 0 sexual contact and there’s DNA he’s up shitcreek and should settle rightfuckingnow otherwise he’s going to prison for 20 years or so

"So basically, the Stats make no sense whatsoever."

I thought about mentioning the DNA threat from the prosecutor as a big red flag. But I’m ultimately going to stay out of it, given the game of telephone involved from plaintiff to D.A. to hearing to newspaper. This kind of stuff is tough to digest no matter what.
