Islanders-Hurricanes [game thread]
New York Islanders at Carolina Hurricanes, Jan 28, 2010 7:00 PM EST
Tone-setter for this road trip. Win and things feel cheery heading into Philadelphia. Lose, and the specter of "another Philly game" hangs over the first half of this four-game trip. No pressure, Rick DiPietro. Cam Ward at the other end.
Meanwhile: The Islanders have signed Trevor Gillies, playing with Bridgeport all year (123 PIM in 18 games), to an NHL contract. Gillies is a former Hurricane property; here's his fight card. Whenever his name comes up, all I hear is "This is not the Gillies you are looking for." But that's not fair -- there was only one Clark. And Scott Gordon, appropriately, wants guys to actually throw a check here and there. Tim Jackman insurance, puttin' on the phoil for Philly, or coincidence? [Update: Not coincidence at all; Gillies joins the team for Philadelphia. Ha!]
And in Katie Strang's gameday post, she writes that Mark Streit has talked with multiple players about understanding the importance of this trip, while Gordon wants them to put the Capitals game behind them, and Bruno Gervais and Andrew MacDonald are likely to get some PP time with Jack Hillen out.
Game lyric: "Come in, she said, I'll give ya' ... shelter from the storm."
SITE UPDATE: Finally, you might soon notice, we have an NHL video player added to the right margin of the site. It pushes FanShots down further (as well as other stuff) but will provide quick access to Islanders game video. I know there's a lot of noise on the site already, but this could be cool and isn't supposed to slow load times. If you have any opinions, complaints, suggestions on that or other things, feel free to let me know in any form (privately or via comments, I've no preference). I will probably still include game highlights video in the game recaps though, because I like having a record to look back on a game -- not just what happened but how stupidly wrong I was about it at the time.

My lyric of the day:
Hey there Salinger, What did you do?
Just when the world was looking at you
To write anything, that meant anything
You told us you were through
And it’s been years since you passed away
but I see no plaque, and I see no grave.
And I can’t help believing, you wanted it that way.
NittanyWhiteOut.com. Arguably the second best Penn State blog I know of.
Very sad losing Salinger and Zinn in the last 24 hours.
Hopefully some good hockey will lift my spirits up.
10 points to anybody who guesses the song

I try to approach deaths like these as tributes: He (they) led a good long life, and made his (their) mark. It was a good run, made the mortal coil a little easier to take.

Trevor Gillies
I posted this in the preview, but it’s worth a shot here too:
According to Katie Strang, he’s been signed to an NHL contract and will be with the team in Philly. I saw him a couple of times this season in Bridgeport and two seasons ago when he was with Albany.
Big, tough guy, enforcer, over 120 PMs in less than 20 games this season. I dunno where or why he fits in right now with this club. He’s 30 and never sniffed the NHL until now, always thought of him as a Rob Skrlac type, great guy to have in the AHL but a major liability at the NHL level. Gordon said he wanted size and toughness on the team recently, but Gillies is also a couple of minute a game enforcer Gordon has said in the past he does not want on his team. I dunno what to make of this…

He’ll be an RFA, and the Sutters like him. I doubt he’ll be going anywhere anytime soon. A

It smells like Jackman insurance
Like Jackman won’t be back in time and they like Gillies better than Rechlicz, so rush him up here for the Philly game. A bit odd, though – don’t know how much ice he’ll see even against the Flyers.
Lighthouse Hockey: Under contract through 2021, knees and hips be damned.
He's like an older version of Rechlicz
If they wanted size and grit, I would have preferred to see Brett Westgarth called up than Gillies. Westgarth can help on the depleted blue line while being the physical guy. He has much more potential than a 4-5 minute a game enforcer type.

I’m sort of torn there. I’d prefer a guy who can take a regular shift, but on the other hand, if it’s just a matter of taking Flyers goons off for 5, 10 minutes a game so they feel whole, I’d rather lose a forward than leave them playing 5 D.
Lighthouse Hockey: Under contract through 2021, knees and hips be damned.
Yeah, of all the teams you need some muscle against, the Flyers are the team.

No, he isn’t. Colton Gillies of the Wild is his nephew, that’s Clark’s only relation playing hockey currently.

Trevor Gillies is the guy the Islanders just signed, no relation to Clark. Colton Gillies was a draft pick of the Wild in 2007 and is Clark’s nephew.

Gillies
is a decent fighter but he got tuned up pretty good against Boogaard. I’d rather they bring up Reich because Philly will scratch Cote and you only need someone to fight Carcillo and Asham; and Jackman and Reich can do that and play a regular shift too boot.
No Howie again tonight
Kenny Albert again. I’m almost happy I have to miss most of the game tonight. Almost.

Yeah that was an “A did not cause B” play. Just Bailey’s fifth of the season, impressive.

FYI with pictures
You can control the size by inserting height=175 in the code between img and source, like:
img height=175 src="http://cannoneerno4.files.wordpress.com/2009/03/bruno.jpg
That number (doesn’t have to be 175) controls the size, then preview will show you how big it will be.

You don’t want to know how many times it took me before I remembered how to do it right.

Is it possible Carolina has another late season run left in the tank?
I recall everyone writing them off early last season after a terrible start.
Very possible
But for them to get to playoff land would be downright miraculous. (So of course it will happen.)
Lighthouse Hockey: Under contract through 2021, knees and hips be damned.
So this is when our season goes down the tube, huh.
NittanyWhiteOut.com. Arguably the second best Penn State blog I know of.
Possibly
Wouldn’t shock me.
Playing tight and mistake free hockey is very difficult for a young team at this time of year. Good thing about it is that this where they learn to develop killer instinct.
Our D is also terrible and getting exposed.
Nice shift
Well, at least our kid line can play. I might just tune back in every two minutes.

marty Icant get game on puter
can i get a direct feed link maybe cause im in canada but dont get game at atdhe thanx someone here can vouche for me
Did Bergenheim even get a shot off on that 2-on-1?
Looked like it rode up his blade and disappeared.

The backup goalie
Do guys just want more space on the bench these days, or their overstuffed pads are too big? How do some of these newer buildings not have room for the away team backup to sit on the bench?
/Andy Rooney
Lighthouse Hockey: Under contract through 2021, knees and hips be damned.
The colesium was built in 1970 and the visiting goalie always seems to sit in the visitor’s ramp.
Lets Go Islanders!!!!
I’m talking about Carolina. Roloson was sitting in the corner. And there are other new buildings (can’t remember which) that feature the same.
Lighthouse Hockey: Under contract through 2021, knees and hips be damned.
I would think most new arenas would have the appropriate room allowed for ALl of the players
If the Islanders moved to Flushing, they wouldn't have to change the name!
IT'S THE ROID ERA
The players are bigger now and so is the equipment
The equipement yes, the players…not so much…
If the Islanders moved to Flushing, they wouldn't have to change the name!
You also have to factor in the room for Pierre McGuire
Everytime I see him between benches I think it is so odd
Haha, too true. My GOD we need to leave room for Pierre!
Lighthouse Hockey: Under contract through 2021, knees and hips be damned.
The other thing that keeps me up at night
I’d figure all new buildings were built so players and staff could get to the locker room from the bench without crossing the ice, but that’s not the case either.
Lighthouse Hockey: Under contract through 2021, knees and hips be damned.
Heh, Trevor Gillie's 1st NHL game
From 2005: 4 shifts, 2:40 TOI, 5 penalties, 21 PIM, and allegedly 1:21 of his 2:40 came on the powerplay.
Lighthouse Hockey: Under contract through 2021, knees and hips be damned.
I’ll be damned! Talk about an eventful first game. I wonder if that PP TOI figure is accurate. Can’t imagine the reason in a non-blowout.

Woo hoo, powerplay

I'm with Billy
I thought we were getting a PP there for holding the stick, then a hook goes the other way. That’s what this one feels like so far.

Except for the shifft start of the first period

Feel like the top line could get one. They need more shifts like the first.

The Trap stinks
Isles can’t do anything tonight :(
Canes doing a good job keeping it simple

think Moulson had a quality attempt..and that was the Isles last SOG

JT has the I hate life look on his face
he needs a rest
Complete turn around from the way we were playing. Ah oh well…
If the Islanders moved to Flushing, they wouldn't have to change the name!
Gotta admit.....
…..he may have a point this time; Gordon could’ve tried to mix up the lines more – SOMEthing to throw the ’Canes OFF…..
So what should Gordon have done that he didn’t?
Lighthouse Hockey: Under contract through 2021, knees and hips be damned.
Well, OK then
How many things went wrong on that shorty? I lost count.
Lighthouse Hockey: Under contract through 2021, knees and hips be damned.
.....as I said a few days ago.....
…..this team has lost faith, In itself, in a fair game, in just about EVERYTHING, I fear…..
Peverley scores for Atlanta..tied ith the Flers at 3
If the Islanders moved to Flushing, they wouldn't have to change the name!
Hey if we want a better shot at Taylor Hall
Trade Roloson to Dallas for their 1st round pick (do they have it) and let DP start most of the games letting Biron back him up.
Clearly, I aimed too low with the preview
But we have a 20 goal scorer again! Baby steps.
Lighthouse Hockey: Under contract through 2021, knees and hips be damned.
He Missed!
Oh, he didn’t? FUCK
If the Islanders moved to Flushing, they wouldn't have to change the name!
Bailey wiffs
He has to settle down. Should have received that pass in front of the net.
Looked like just a plain old bounce to me, but they didn’t show a clear replay.

Ladies and Gentlemen, the NY Islanders tonight were defeated by…Themselves!
If the Islanders moved to Flushing, they wouldn't have to change the name!
Young team that looks lost
Hate beating up on JT but he’s been a big nothing for a while now
Unless of course your’e describing how the Iles have played lately…then I agree
If the Islanders moved to Flushing, they wouldn't have to change the name!
First Periods...
Haven’t the Isles been bad, looking lost in the first period lately? Seemslike 3 or4 games…hmmm

Atlanta has taken the lead
Kane creates teh goal, getting around Pronger hee hee.
Lighthouse Hockey: Under contract through 2021, knees and hips be damned.
DP may be a problem, too.....
…..the Pittsburgh game seems to have slowly infected this team – and I wonder now if the lack of faith is having a similar effect to what happened with Biron in net…..
Yep, I think DP still hasn’t been tested. The way this one started, I was at least looking forward to seeing him have to face a lot of side-to-side movement. But then Carolina stopped pressing.
Lighthouse Hockey: Under contract through 2021, knees and hips be damned.
Hedberg goes out to stop a breakaway, and as he gets up…He’s elbowed by anorther Flyer…

Damn Broad Street Bullies are back
If the Islanders moved to Flushing, they wouldn't have to change the name!
a little too aggressive that time
probably cost the Flyers the game
Flyers lose
they really suck in my eyes no matter what year
Moulson after a shower looks like some homeless guy from the subway..
If the Islanders moved to Flushing, they wouldn't have to change the name!
I gave a homeless guy 50 cents
he looked so dirty I threw the money at him. Sounds mean but tired of being sick.
Jeff Carter
Iv seen Peter Mueller name on this site but if available would u make a play for Carter
what a waste to lose to carolina
someoen has to get benched for that effort

Carter
not sure but have heard his name mentioned, they arent winning right now and have alot invested, they r up agaist the cap, start w a 1st rnd pick
the bottom line
JT needs to start scoring for this team to have a real shot at the playoffs. If he doesn’t get the scoring touch back before the break, it is probably time for Garth to sell off UFAs and give some Bridgepoty guys a shot.
msg
I hate the fact that the Isles are on Msg…Look whats on now…after an Islander game…Looks like a Ranger promo
If the Islanders moved to Flushing, they wouldn't have to change the name!
as long as they pay the Isles 21 million a year I could care less what they show
That TV contract is what keeps the Isles afloat and will keep them here for years
two weeks off
I think will help both management and the team take a deep breath and stick with the inital plan which is to look to future see what we can get for Sutton, Biron but right now if someone offered something good mabey Rolo
Sutton will probably depend on how ready our prospects are
if they are not ready, it would probably make sense to re-sign him. Weight and Sim might be options. It would take a pretty extraordinary offer to justify trading Roly.
If we get an especially good offer for Sutton we could trade him
and try to sign two D FAs this summer.
Bridgeport d vets next yr (just kidding)
Hamonic Dehaan
Klymentyv Kohn
Kessel Niemi
Ness Kessel
Katic Spuragen
de Haan can’t play in the AHL next year. He won’t be 20 during the season, he has to play in the Juniors or NHL, probably Juniors again after loosing half this year to the shoulder surgery. I forgot about Niemi, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he played in the SM-Liiga next year and not in Bridgeport.

Niemi had a good run in exhibition
Gordon gave him encouragement. He may be in Bridgeport next year, if he isn’t returned to juniors.
De Haan
Wait, you’re right, but this Ottawa article leads by saying his junior career is done. Are there other wrinkles (I don’t think so), or are they just making a big leap by assuming he’ll be in the NHL?
Lighthouse Hockey: Under contract through 2021, knees and hips be damned.
Yeah, I did some CBA snooping about this:
If a Player who is drafted as an 18-year-old ceases to play in the
Juniors in the first League Year after he has been drafted, his
drafting Club shall have the exclusive right of negotiation for his
services until the fourth June 1 following his initial selection in the
Entry Draft.
If a Player who is drafted as an 18-year-old ceases to play in the
Juniors in the second League Year after he has been drafted and
the Club has tendered to such Player a Bona Fide Offer pursuant to
8.6(a)(ii), his drafting Club shall have the exclusive right of
negotiation for his services until the fourth June 1 following his
initial selection in the Entry Draft.
During the first two seasons next succeeding the draft of an age 18 Player,
the Club he signs an SPC with must first offer him to the club from which he was claimed before it may Loan him.
During the seasons set forth in (a) and (b) above, the age 18 and age 19
Player, respectively, may be Loaned to the minor league team affiliate of his Club when
his Junior team is no longer in competition and provided he has been listed on the Club’s minor league eligibility list.
Basically I think the article thinks he might go straight to the NHL, because the only way de Haan can join the AHL club is when Oshawa’s season is over. The third quotation basically says next year de Haan must be offered back to Oshawa, if they don’t take him he can be sent to Bridgeport. But there’s a snowballs chance in hell of that happening.

Excellent. Thanks. That was my understanding; sounds like a big assumption or just stylized lede in that article then.
