Capitals-Islanders [game thread]
Washington Capitals at New York Islanders, Jan 26, 2010 7:00 PM EST
If you're scoring at home: Josh Bailey is a game-time decision, Calvin De Haan is at the Coliseum preparing for season-ending shoulder surgery, and Newsday has 35 paying online subscribers. Oh, and Radek Martinek, once used to soften the effects of an Ovechkin invasion, is still out for the year.
As a wise man once said: "You can't sell leaf tables and no chairs! Chairs, you got a dinette set. No chairs, you got dick! I ask my wife, she got more sense..."
Good luck, Islanders. For this one you will need it, with or without the dinette set.

Kenny Albert?
Really? I know Howie’s ill, but Kenny Albert? They couldn’t find anyone who wasn’t associated with the Rags to fill in?

I hope he mistakes Richard Park for Gaborik. Hey, it could happen.

I was going to say I’m glad it’s not them. Albert’s voice sounds less distinctive than those two.

I was thinking about it, I wish Marv Albert was doing this game so we could make cross dressing jokes all night.

Yeah, I’m moving to Minnesota in the summer and the only way I’m going to be able to watch the Isles next year is NHL.com, so I was hoping it would be a good service.

A few SBN writers for other teams have gotten a free trial to review it. I’ll try to dig those links up when I get a chance. So far I’ve heard pretty positive reviews, although even with a blazing connection it is sometimes jerky, apparently.

Hopefully Isles will settle down
Getting dizzy with all the east west passing from Caps. This is best I’ve seen the Caps vs Isles this season.
A very boys vs. men feel to this. When Boudreau talked about teams not taking the Isles seriously, I couldn’t help wondering if that was a message to his own team.

Roloson is very Billy Smith like…dealing with players that come too close with a stiff upper hand
Lets Go Islanders!!!!
And it’s funny, even before he was an Islander, his approach didn’t bother me too much. It’s less crazy lunatic than Belfour, nowhere near dramatic as Hasek or pouty as Brodeur. Always struck me as a veteran maintaining his space.

I hate Center Ice. I’m going around in circles. It says watch free games tonight, I click, I get a login screen. ON that screen is a link saying Watch free tonight, I click, I’m back at the last screen. I login, and then it takes me back to another login screen.

Hmm
they can’t use Hillen as an excuse to give up those two shabby goals. They need to refocus and buckle down, or swap up the lines quick and the netminder.

lol, I picked the wrong night to start actually watching games. I usually follow via boxscore but figured I’d try Center Ice.
Whose on the Bench? Dip Or Biron? If its Biron I’d give him a go and see if its any sort of a spark.

the other is in 2nd year of rebuild

Cheeky. In all seriousness, they have to be nervous about Theodore, but what can you do? His highs are good enough to go all the way; just have to hope his lows don’t come at the wrong time.

Ouch....
Worst game in a long while for these guys….no one is doing much of anything. Where’s the defense?
Just saying….two straight games, plenty of rest, and yet the Isles look lethargic. I know the caps are better, theres no question. But these are dumb mistakes and us not hustling.
We lack energy….again. Can we stop pretending that there isnt some issue with conditioning and pre-game prep here? (And that part of this is Gordon’s fault?)
No excuses
Kohn might come back if Hillen is out. Tambellini needs to be in the lineup as someone will pay the price after tonight.
Pre-game prep? Maybe. Conditioning? No pretense there. If they can turn it on during a game, I don’t see conditioning as the first place to look.
Tonight I don’t see lethargy, I see a team in awe of the Caps.

No one in the East right now….Penguins and Devils will eventually pull it together and play tough…especially the Pens (if their healthy at playoff time and their PP is strong). In the West, it’s Chicago. Believe they are one of the best young teams in the League.
I'll give you that.
For some reason I read “league” as “conference.” Chicago is definitely at least as good as Washington. I’m not as faithful re the Pens and Devils, but it’s definitely possible.

I just think when it comes playoff time, the Pens will be hard to beat and until someone does knock them off their roost, they are still the best. Also, I haven’t been all that impressed the last year or two the Caps have been in the playoffs…they remind me a little bit of San Jose….best team in the league, but they can’t get past the first round….Chicago is playing like they belong…I like their attitude on the ice and their two goalies have been better than advertised..they are both solid.
plenty of others in the organization to replace them

Very tough
You can’t go wrong, but … for the way they are right now? Ovechkin. If I was thinking about a 10-year span? Crosby. Crosby arrived as a complete player, and I suspect his game will hold up better with age. But if I needed fans right away (i.e. “starting a team”), Ovie’s more exciting and will bring them out.
But I firmly believe you can’t go wrong, regardless of what any paranoid conspiracy theorists believe. It’s not Crosby’s fault Canada turned him into a media object at 15, nor that the NHL made him The Face.

…..I actually liked Archie back in the day, and Eli seems comparatively level-headed (but compared to Peyton, almost ANYONE would…..)
Eli always seemed like a moderately likeable nerd to me. I don’t really have a problem with him…I’m convinced Archie orchestrated the double-Lindros, though.

Saints fans something else? I remember Pre Katrina when that place was so empty you could call it NVMC. They are just lucky that that team got better at the same time as thier post Katrina return. Benson wasnt spending money on that team adn quickly relised that if they wanted to keep the team in NOLA instead of racing the Bills to LA, he better change things up. Lets see those fans show up when they hit the skids. my .02

Yes, the *fans*
I’m talking about the ones who lived and died with them for 25 years of losing. Just amazing, some of the conversations I had in the late ‘80s and ’90s. "They’re gonna turn it around one day, I know it. It’s gotta happen." It’s no wonder there weren’t many of them for that franchise, but the ones they had were something else.
They were good for a little bit in the early ’00s, too, when I thought they drew well.

lots of relocated ones here
and yes, the hardcore ones are the best and winning should consistently should help (ugh 7-2) keep the others around longer. It is a great town but I think the media constantly applies the Katrina factor too much. Maybe I’m just bitter that my teams didn’t get 9/11 rooting factor. The Patsies stole that from me

I mean, you could draw some parallels between the Saints and Isles, but real fans will still stick around. Beyond that, sometimes sports transcend the field into the social aspect, and the Saints held a large part of that city together. I can remember entering the superdome when there were holes in the roof, watching people who stood behind try to survive. It’s just an amazing turn around for the entire city and if i’m going to be called naive, i’ll still feel good for them.
I live in Indiana.
If the Colts win my life will become unbearable for an extended period of time. Please root for the Saints. Everyone. PLEASE.

No, Colts fans are just the most insufferable in sports, and I’m surrounded by them. Also, I’m not one.

That has been debated. Do you want the Isles to get into the playoffs and get routed the first round…or get a better draft pick?
Lets Go Islanders!!!!

I feel like since we have (at least most of) our core together now, the playoff experience would be better. Though I know jack about who’s going to be in the draft this year, so I don’t know how relevant my opinion on the subject is.

No one is taking your opinion away, but a disaster in the playoffs proves what?
Lets Go Islanders!!!!
I don’t know that it proves anything, but it would expose the guys to a playoff atmosphere with little pressure. If they sneak in, everyone will be expecting a short series, so it’ll be an opportunity to learn how to play playoff hockey with no expectations.
Mostly, though, I just can’t root for a team to lose. Not one that I like, anyway.

I've no desire to see them slaughtered
…but I can’t stop rooting for them to do whatever they can to win (short of making acquisitions and/or hanging on to guys they won’t re-sign but might have value). I just think even the sell-or-stand-pat decision at the trade deadline isn’t that huge for them, because I don’t imagine their assets fetching much.
But if they earn their way to the playoffs and then get spanked, that’s not the worst lesson in the world. It’s not like other 8th-seed years: This time, they’ll continue to get better.
Lighthouse Hockey: Under contract through 2021, knees and hips be damned.
This time most of the people will stay on the team to learn from the lesson rather than being shipped off to another team to be replaced by another team to meet the same fate. Wait this sounds…like the Rangers.

Well, unless a miracle happens in the lottery then there is no difference in the last lottory pick and the first or second non lottery pick, so why the hell not! Speaking of lottery any one else play 5-9-19-22-23-31 in mega millions?

I agree that there could be some trades before the deadline that might help the team. But right now, even our D is suspect. Rookies from Bridgeport replacing veterans going into the playoffs can’t be good.
And I have never said anything against winning. Just trying to face reality when it comes.
Lets Go Islanders!!!!
I hear ya’. I was thinking the draft pick will be high whether they make the playoffs or not (because the East is weak), but now I remember — I think — that the playoff teams automatically get the final 16 picks, even if they’re worse than some of the teams that don’t make it. Harumph.

I'm having second thoughts
How long till pitchers and catchers report?
Two or three weeks, I think. Usually I know the countdown to the day, but the Mets are just going to suck again this year, so I’m not really that excited.

Yeah, for real. It was a nasty season, but they’re not as bad as they looked. I’m mainly just trying to have the lowest possible expectations so that anything good that happens will be a pleasant surprise, and anything bad isn’t unexpected. And because the rotation is Santana, rain, then pray for a hurricane, and maybe a flood.

When my dad was alive, I really cared about the Mets. Theonly thing I care about now are the Islanders. Although I would like to see the insides of Citi Field.

Just root for NO OT
Isles still have a game in hand on Habs and face Panthers Sunday so better Panthers win in regulation.
They look good
but have to prove themselves in playoffs first. Detroit could knock them out in 1st round.
Don't think so...
Whereas last year, they couldn’t play with Detroit, this year they are beating them — consistently.
If Chicago keeps playing they way have, they’ll be the team to beat in the West, regardless where San Jose finishes…they’ll loose in the first round again.
When the playoffs start
get back to me. This is the NHL.
Thats good
in regulation. No points for Habs. Thashers won as well. Isles coem out strong vs canes who play rags at msg tomorrow
Washington took this team veeery seriously
This is why I really don’t think the playoffs are in the cards for this Isles team this season. Man did our D get exposed tonight!!!
forwards weren't much better
No energy and missed on a few PP’s. Washington well rested and schooled the isles.
