Islanders Gameday: Capital steamroller incoming

Complete Coverage >

If you're scoring at home: Josh Bailey is a game-time decision, Calvin De Haan is at the Coliseum preparing for season-ending shoulder surgery, and Newsday has 35 paying online subscribers. Oh, and Radek Martinek, once used to soften the effects of an Ovechkin invasion, is still out for the year.

As a wise man once said: "You can't sell leaf tables and no chairs! Chairs, you got a dinette set. No chairs, you got dick! I ask my wife, she got more sense..."

Good luck, Islanders. For this one you will need it, with or without the dinette set.

A few SBN writers for other teams have gotten a free trial to review it. I’ll try to dig those links up when I get a chance. So far I’ve heard pretty positive reviews, although even with a blazing connection it is sometimes jerky, apparently.

Just saying….two straight games, plenty of rest, and yet the Isles look lethargic. I know the caps are better, theres no question. But these are dumb mistakes and us not hustling.

We lack energy….again. Can we stop pretending that there isnt some issue with conditioning and pre-game prep here? (And that part of this is Gordon’s fault?)

by garik16 on Jan 26, 2010 8:12 PM EST reply actions

No excuses

Kohn might come back if Hillen is out. Tambellini needs to be in the lineup as someone will pay the price after tonight.

Pre-game prep? Maybe. Conditioning? No pretense there. If they can turn it on during a game, I don’t see conditioning as the first place to look.

No one in the East right now….Penguins and Devils will eventually pull it together and play tough…especially the Pens (if their healthy at playoff time and their PP is strong). In the West, it’s Chicago. Believe they are one of the best young teams in the League.

by CC_LV1 on Jan 26, 2010 8:27 PM EST up reply actions

I'll give you that.

For some reason I read “league” as “conference.” Chicago is definitely at least as good as Washington. I’m not as faithful re the Pens and Devils, but it’s definitely possible.

I just think when it comes playoff time, the Pens will be hard to beat and until someone does knock them off their roost, they are still the best. Also, I haven’t been all that impressed the last year or two the Caps have been in the playoffs…they remind me a little bit of San Jose….best team in the league, but they can’t get past the first round….Chicago is playing like they belong…I like their attitude on the ice and their two goalies have been better than advertised..they are both solid.

Very tough

You can’t go wrong, but … for the way they are right now? Ovechkin. If I was thinking about a 10-year span? Crosby. Crosby arrived as a complete player, and I suspect his game will hold up better with age. But if I needed fans right away (i.e. “starting a team”), Ovie’s more exciting and will bring them out.

But I firmly believe you can’t go wrong, regardless of what any paranoid conspiracy theorists believe. It’s not Crosby’s fault Canada turned him into a media object at 15, nor that the NHL made him The Face.

Saints fans something else? I remember Pre Katrina when that place was so empty you could call it NVMC. They are just lucky that that team got better at the same time as thier post Katrina return. Benson wasnt spending money on that team adn quickly relised that if they wanted to keep the team in NOLA instead of racing the Bills to LA, he better change things up. Lets see those fans show up when they hit the skids. my .02

Yes, the *fans*

I’m talking about the ones who lived and died with them for 25 years of losing. Just amazing, some of the conversations I had in the late ‘80s and ’90s. "They’re gonna turn it around one day, I know it. It’s gotta happen." It’s no wonder there weren’t many of them for that franchise, but the ones they had were something else.

They were good for a little bit in the early ’00s, too, when I thought they drew well.

and yes, the hardcore ones are the best and winning should consistently should help (ugh 7-2) keep the others around longer. It is a great town but I think the media constantly applies the Katrina factor too much. Maybe I’m just bitter that my teams didn’t get 9/11 rooting factor. The Patsies stole that from me

by IslesguyinDallas on Jan 26, 2010 9:24 PM EST up reply actions

I mean, you could draw some parallels between the Saints and Isles, but real fans will still stick around. Beyond that, sometimes sports transcend the field into the social aspect, and the Saints held a large part of that city together. I can remember entering the superdome when there were holes in the roof, watching people who stood behind try to survive. It’s just an amazing turn around for the entire city and if i’m going to be called naive, i’ll still feel good for them.

that a first rd pick next year will have a .01% chance of playing on the team next year anyway. You play to perform at your very best, you should always want the team to win.

by albeezle on Jan 26, 2010 9:37 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t know that it proves anything, but it would expose the guys to a playoff atmosphere with little pressure. If they sneak in, everyone will be expecting a short series, so it’ll be an opportunity to learn how to play playoff hockey with no expectations.

Mostly, though, I just can’t root for a team to lose. Not one that I like, anyway.

Perhaps today IS a good day to die.

I've no desire to see them slaughtered

…but I can’t stop rooting for them to do whatever they can to win (short of making acquisitions and/or hanging on to guys they won’t re-sign but might have value). I just think even the sell-or-stand-pat decision at the trade deadline isn’t that huge for them, because I don’t imagine their assets fetching much.

But if they earn their way to the playoffs and then get spanked, that’s not the worst lesson in the world. It’s not like other 8th-seed years: This time, they’ll continue to get better.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
