Trade Deadline is Nearing

I suppose you gotta know when to hold em and know when to fold em. Tough decisions have to be made in terms of whether this team makes the post season or not. Quite frankly I think Snow, who's trade deadlins deals are not exactly his strength, looks to see what other teams do first.

Star-divide

Biron is a given to go. Question is what can Snow really expect to get for him? My thinking is a third rounder at best. I don't know who else is really a lock to go. Some will probably say Tambellini and Witt. I'm thinking that if the price is right and market aligns most likely Hunter.

Your thoughts?

March 3rd

(I edited your title a bit — the deadline is actually March 3.)

I don’t see any Isles fetching more than a 3rd. Well Hunter would if traded, but I don’t figure that will happen (and BC will say that Garth told Logan that Hunter is part of the core and won’t be traded. Personally: Things change in a year. But I still don’t figure Hunter to go.)

Regardless, we have three weeks of games before the Olympic break, then a game after that break but before the deadline. I doubt activity will really pick up until the end of that break, when contenders know which if any Olympic injuries they will have to replace.

Yup, and my thinking is even that is a teeny bit optimistic- unless its a team picking late in the 3rd.

Let Us Go, Islanders! (Ever notice how strange that sounds without the contraction?)

Biron = 3rd rounder. Yep…that sounds about right.

P.S. A poll asking what Biron would be worth would be cool (even though its like the 15th time what he’s worth in a trade has come up).

Not a bad idea. If Chickendirt wants to create one to attach to this post, I can feature it as the standing poll on the home page, too (the current one is old, anyway). If not, I’ll work something like that into a future post.

Your choice

I kinda didn’t want Biron as the central piece of discussion.

I have seen non-Islander posters suggest

a second rounder for Biron although his lack of wins may work against him. It will probably depend on how badly other teams need goaltending and what other options are available. DP’s health seems a non-factor based on his performance to date.

The trade of other players (Weight, Sutton, Sim, and Park) will depend on how viable Islander playoff hopes are. Hunter isn’t going to be moved, period. Witt will not either. He has another year left at $3 mil per and I’m not sure if anyone would want him even if he were in the last year of his contract. The remote prospect of a deal for Roly has already been discussed. Garth will likely hold his fire until the Olympic break, sound out other GMs during the roster freeze, and make any possible moves just before the deadline. If we are at or near 70 points, he will likely do little selling other than Biron and may even do a little buying. We’ll see.

Just Conjecture, So Don't Bite My Head Off...Dom

Biron’s value may be determined by what the other team is willing to part with and the extent to which Garth wants to tinker with the current lineup (which may not be much). The Kings, for instance, seem like an interesting trading partner. Guys like Jack Johnson and even Alex Frolov look like they might go at some point before the trade deadline. Do I think the Islanders have the tools to get a deal done, frankly no. But you never know. Despite that, I think a third round pick is fair value for Biron. His poor record aside, he’s still proven that he can carry a team to the playoffs and even win a few rounds.

Teams I see being interested: Ottawa, Buffalo, LA, Edmonton

As far as any tradable assets, the Islanders really don’t have that many; especially considering Garth’s stance on building from within the organization. Any proposed deal will have to be on his terms (to think that we were in shock that Charles named him GM just 3 short years ago). With the current lineup, they’ve proven they can play against the better teams. I don’t see any major roster shakeups in the coming weeks for any of the currently active players.

With Tambellini not being waived (for whatever reason I don’t know) and subsequently Nate Thompson (Go-Go fave or not, Nate did give this team his heart and soul and I wish him well) being picked up by the Bolts, it tells me that there are two possibilities 1) We should start the countdown to “Tambellini gets traded to some Western Conference team for a bag of pucks” or 2) We will see Tamby in the lineup for a bit of a showcase prior to the March 3rd deadline and let the other GM’s do the fishing instead of Garth dealing from a point of weakness and just trying to clear some $525,000 of cap space. Or neither. I’m just the armchair GM here.

Why would Edmonton be interested in Biron? They will be looking to sell talent, not buy—esp not a rentagoalie. Ottawa and Dallas seem the likeliest destinations unless there is an injury to a contender’s goalie. Since Ottawa does not, I believe, have a third rounder but does have two second rounders—including one from SJ which will be a late round pick—that might be the best place for Garth to move Biron to. As I have said elsewhere, other moves will depend on what happens in the next few weeks.

I think you could be onto something with LA as a trade partner – I think it is more likely than Ottawa. Edmonton is not that bad of a location either, but he wouldn’t be going there is a rental and that is problematic as they still have the broken ’Bulin Wall on their salary (they only need one Anderson in Colorado equivalent).

There is no chance that Biron ends up in Buffalo, and even if he were, he would fetch next to zilch (Lalime’s been doing okay, and its Miller-time like 90% of games).

by HugoAgogo on Jan 25, 2010 3:14 PM EST up reply actions

I only mention Edmonton and Buffalo based on their current goalie situations. If Edmonton is resigned to bomb the rest of the way and possible collect the top pick, then they can go with Deslauriers (sp?).

In Buffalo’s case, Lalime hasn’t really been playing well and can’t even come close to sharing the workload with Ryan Miller (not that he should). However, with Miller playing for Team USA in the Olympics and not getting a rest, it’s possible that a Buffalo may be forced into a situation where they will need a goalie who can platoon with Miller down the stretch. I don’t see Lalime being able to do that. It’s a possibility in my mind.

I personally would love if LA is the trading partner for any deal the Isles make. With a plethora of young talent and the ability to move it, if Lombardi is game it might be the perfect fit. Considering only that the Islanders will not look to trade with an Eastern team if they are in the thick of a playoff race (you don’t give the team’s you’re fighting with a leg up). So if only for that reason, I see Biron being moved to the Western Conference.

I agree – with Biron you have to look at teams that have a need, and who has that need is going to be up in the air. Edmonton has that need, yet is near-tanking and stuck with Khabi (on the other hand, their management does some seriously odd things). Buffalo – I’ve heard some of their fans at least pine for Biron as insurance after Miller carries Team USA to…something.

LA would be interesting. But it’s so hard to guess what teams will do, and whether Turco and one of the Nashville netminders will be sought. Since no team is in a clear “BIRON WILL MAKE US WHOLE!” situation, that’s why I fear it ending up being a 3rd at best.

Since when has LA needed a goaltender?

Ottawa has the need…and a late second rounder that Garth would like very much.

Just For Reference

There will be TWO Trade Deadlines this year:

Feb. 12th before the roster freeze for the Olympics and March 3rd, the official day. I would personally expect to see more player movement on Feb. 12th based on the number games down the stretch these teams will have.

You could be right, Dom

but I am more inclined to think that teams will talk over the deadline and finalize things just before the final deadline.

by BCISLEMAN on Jan 25, 2010 4:39 PM EST up reply actions

Speaking of the deadline - TSN run-down

TSN has a nice run-down of each team’s existing assets, in terms of who’s UFA, who’s got a NTC, etc. Obviously there’s not much there for the Isles (i.e. they shouldn’t be buyers and all they have for sale with any market value is Sutton and Biron), but it’s a nice reference other teams if you’re sketching out giant trades on a napkin.

You might disagree, Dom

but what they said was that the Isles had “some guys” who would be of interest including Sutton and Biron. I would include, at minimum, Weight and Sim. Not sure what they find interesting about Witt and Gervais.
