Around SBN: Carmelo Anthony, Amar'e Stoudemire Vow To Fit In With Lin

The risk when carrying just six healthy defensemen -- not that waiving Nate Thompson is a tremendous risk -- is it necessitates a roster move if something like last night happens.

In the event Andy Sutton is has been suspended two games: Mark Katic was awarded a spot in the AHL All-Star game (last night), but an injury to Katic forced 2005 pick Dustin Kohn to replace him. The Isles site suggests Thompson could play in Bridgeport if (when) he clears.

I’m rather thrilled that this is the result of a bad occurrence.

Hopefully Nate Thompson stays in Bridgeport for the season (won’t happen).

(Now if you’re not going to send down Tamby, how bout sneaking him in a game or two?)

Great

now I have to figure out what I am leaving Coli in my will. Maybe that stuffed bird my wife has hanging on the wall. That’ll work!!!

nice justice

jovo blatant elbow with 50/50 intent to injure (and 2nd time offender) = 2 games
sutton irresponsible board from behind that he immediately knew was bad (last offense 5 years ago) = 2 games

fn disgrace

why isn't #16 hanging in the rafters?

by bob l on Jan 20, 2010 3:41 PM EST reply actions

the disgrace

was that Jovo didn’t get more. Two isn’t that unreasonable for Andy’s hit.

excellent point dom, and no links on the nhl.com site to contact the commish or CC with feedback about these inconsistencies either

I’m not surprised but I think 1 game is more appropriate. Could you imagine if it were Crosby or Malkin? 5-10 I would guess.

by Nystrom on Jan 20, 2010 3:58 PM EST up reply actions

what do you mean??
if it were crosby being hit ? – 3-5 minimum
if it were crosby doing the hitting ? 5 min major/game misconduct, no suspension

why isn't #16 hanging in the rafters?

by bob l on Jan 20, 2010 4:01 PM EST up reply actions

Sorry, if it were Crosby or Malkin who were hit.

I think it’s obvious that Crosby and Malkin would not be suspended if they hit from behind. Ha-ha.

by Nystrom on Jan 20, 2010 4:07 PM EST reply actions

It'll be interesting if that ever happens

They gave Ovechkin 2 this year after several perceived free rides. The injury result is always a wild card: For elbowing, Witt and Pock each got 5 games last year, yet Jovo — a repeat offender — gets 2 this year. The difference was, what?…no concussion?

So if Dupuis had a concussion, does 2 become 5? If Dupuis doesn’t bleed, does it become “the penalty was the penalty and that’s enough”?

Colon Campbell needs to die

I’m serious, can we get Epsen Knutsen back in the NHL to take aim at the next game Campbell goes to?

Wow.

That’s even too tasteless for me. I had to think back to what you’re referring to [initially: “Espen Knutsen does kinda sound like a historical assassin’s name.”], but a little girl’s death ain’t my idea of funny.

It's Sad

That that unfortunate incident is all Knutsen will ever be remembered for. Not for being the first Norwegian All Star, not for his affable personality, not for being a great guy (He still spends as much time as he can fund raising for the foundation he set up in Brittanie Cecil’s name) and being the one bright spot on some god awful Blue Jackets teams.

True

Though before today I just remembered him as a Norwegian star — not for that tragedy. Did he just leave because he was stuck with the BJ’s? Seemed like he was young enough to still be playing. (Yes, I realize I can just go to hockeydb and look it up.)

The Jackets actually demoted then released him in the 03-04 season. He went back to play in Sweden for Djurgarden, but suffered a severe neck injury and had to retire (although he is still found in EA’s NHL series as a member of the Norwegian team despite the fact he’s been retired since 04). He currently is the head coach for Valerenga in Oslo, and I think (not positive) he’ll be one of Norway’s assistants in Vancouver.

It’s ironic that Norway has began to have success in the international stage (going to the Olympics for the first time in 16 years, making it to the knockout stages of the WC) since he’s retired.

Sutton hit was explained on MSG during game

I think the hit was explained well on teh broadcast. It seemed like Dupuis started to rotate his shoulders and body and then stopped, but Sutton was already committed. I know he wasn’t looking to hit him that way. He has been hitting clean and hard all season, he has been a solid defensive blue liner this season.

that said it doesn’t surprise me, seems like the NHL loves handing out suspensions over any hit that somebody gets hurt, I am pretty sure they don’t even look at the whole play anymore just the 3 sconds of video

by Rickfansince76 on Jan 20, 2010 4:41 PM EST reply actions

Live, and with the speed at which it happened, I certainly buy that explanation. But the replays look bad, and there is that instant, even a millisecond, of him facing the numbers and driving into him. That’s just a no-no, and it’s got to be a no-no.

If they can react to puck movement within an instant, they need to be expected to alter their body movement in an instant as well — or else, failing that, err on the side of caution.

But you’re right: The NHL treats injury as the guide … except when they don’t (see: Richards/Booth), which is what makes it so damned maddening. Ah, but Cambpell “treats each incident as separate,” so none of this matters, and we’re just supposed to accept it.

by Dominik on Jan 20, 2010 4:49 PM EST up reply actions

The speed in which the game occurs requires lightning fast reflexes for sure, but unfortunately these things are to be expected from time to time. Yes, even from “clean” players.

Honestly, when I saw the play live even I thought Dupuis would complete his rotation around the way his right shoulder almost completely faced Sutton. It’s a timing play, you “hope” that the target is going to do what you think he’s gonna do before you finish your check – if he doesn’t, you hope he doesn’t get hurt.

If it wasn’t Sutton who hit him last night, I doubt we would’ve seen him crumpled and bloody. Sutton is a big dude, especially at cruising speed.

Two games is certainly fair, he knows he was wrong and will likely do his best to pick and choose his spots, especially with numbers showing…..

I just hope he doesn’t get soft on us now and refuse to play his role.

Yeah, totally agree.

I think that’s probably true, too. Was thinking that at the time. I think that’s just … all the natural advantages bigger players have, that’s one disadvantage — they have to reel it in.

I hope it doesn’t soften Sutton up, but I doubt it will. Especially since it didn’t occur during one of his trademark checks (which honestly are much more likely to go wrong).

If DuPuis would have been playing hockey rather than tossing off behind the net this would have never happened. I think the suspension is crap and I believe that Sutton served his notice for the next meeting. Hopefully the Islanders have a bigger team next year because we can’t afford to have the biggest guy/ best physical presence suspended for two games due to a half pint wannabe magician playing with himself behind the Islanders net. What is it the ref yelled at Rollie earlier? Oh yeah, MOVE THE PUCK! Funny how that only applies to the Isles goalie when he is holding the puck. Yeah, I don’t agree with the suspension. I can be called a homer on this one and I can accept that but I would think the same thing if Phaneuf or Pronger hit someone like the net if we were disrespecting their team in the same manner.

I am starting to believe that the guy that hit Brendan Witt with the SUV was Swiss.

I have no problem with Sutton getting suspended here

Well, maybe I’m playing a bit of Devils Advocate.

Anyways.

If it means people getting suspended five games and it’s handed out evenly I would be OK with that. If it sends a message to players that they need to take caution along the boards then it’s cool. I like anyone else love the hitting in the game but I have also seen one Kevin Colley’s too many.

I go to the games and watch to see a good hard fought game but I do not go to watch players on either team get butchered. And I am not saying that I think Sutton hit him like that on purpose either.

The term devils advocate has a whole new meaning here since we face the Jersey Snore on Saturday with a grudge and now lacking our lurking open ice hip check machine.

Since Sutton has a few days off, it would be fun if they could make a sequel to the commercial of him wearing the comically small kids pads, hopefully teaching the kid how to ruin an undersized forward’s pretty face.

This is a good idea!

And since Dupuis probably has a couple of days off and is friendly with Sutton, maybe he’d play a part as himself. …or too soon?
