Who would you pick in the 2010 draft?

[Editor's note: Because it's never too early to think ahead :) Expanding on a recent discussion in comments, BCISLEMAN tackles two of the hot candidates for the 2010 draft. If the Islanders get there and have that choice, who would you go with? Great topic heading into the holiday weekend... First up is Teemu Pulkkinen, who is worth selecting for his name alone.]

05.12.2008 Jokerit - Ässät & Teemu Pulkkisen debyytti SM-Liigassa (via Sparrowi)

Star-divide

Teemu Pulkkinen LW

The Scouting Report (among others) says:

Pulkkinen has been compared to Pittsburgh Pens star, Evgeni Malkin: not as big, but (he) possesses a hard shot, exceptional lateral quickness and makes those around him better ... plays physical and moves well in open ice ... you want to give the puck to him to start the play.... While he isn’t the biggest player, he is not afraid to drive the traffic zones on the ice. He doesn’t look to play the body often, but he’s not afraid to take a big hit if it means making a play and he certainly doesn’t shy away from contact. His skating is solid, albeit not at the same level many have come to expect from most European prospects. However, what Pulkkinen lacks in elite speed, he makes up for with slick offensive talent. He’s extremely good with the puck and handles it incredibly well in traffic. He also has a very good shot and is one of those players that while he has the prowess of a true sniper, he is equally adept and being a top notch playmaker.

Cam Fowler D

The Scouting Report (among others) says:

Fowler is a terrific skater, especially for his size and looks almost effortless with a very strong stride. In his own end Fowler is extremely strong positionally and can log heavy minutes against the other team’s top line. However, Fowler is equally adept at contributing at the other end of the ice as his offensive instincts are very good ... skill set has been compared to Scott Niedermayer's ... looks to have all the tools to be a big time defenseman in the NHL in the future. While his offensive potential may not be as high end as some think, he definitely has the ability to be a very good two way defenseman, and should be ready for NHL duty as early as the 2010/2011 season.

Teemu would make an ideal linemate for Josh and Kyle in my view. And Cam would be the elite defender this defense needs to be of championship caliber. I need to get the hockey fairy to wave her magic wand and give the Isles two top five picks!!!!

Great write-up on the two, first of all.

Things can change between now and Draft Day 2010, but if we’re choosing between these two, I’d aim for the big, skilled defenseman. With Okposo, Bailey, Tavares, and a host of second-tier forward prospects like Joensuu, et al. – I know most won’t factor into the Islanders’ future core, but for now, we’re loaded with these types – I think we’re set on the offensive side of things.

Defensively, we’ve improved the system’s depth over the past couple of years, but we still lack that “big-time” defender. de Haan is skilled/precocious, but will likely need time to develop. Similar story with Ness, who is less of a sure bet. Hamonic has size/physicality, yes, but has been described as a modest two-way guy who is a better fit rounding out your Top-4 [as opposed to anchoring it].

Fowler appears to be one of those defenders who has all the physical tools that teams crave, but also the skill-set to be useful at both ends of the ice. I can see him developing into a stalwart top-pairing guy for us, someone who can play lots of minutes in all situations and anchor our defense. Even after two reasonably meticulous drafts, the most help we could use is on our backline, IMO.

Tavares – Bailey – Okposo
Fowler – de Haan

Of course, as everyone—I think—knows, I favor putting JT on a second line as center with Hunts on his RW and whoever steps up as his LW. Even if, as I suspect and hope, JT, KO, JB, and SB all step up and have the tremendous seasons we all hope that launch them on to great careers, we still are—IMHO-one elite player away on offense. Adding Pulkinnen to the Bailey line and someone like Byfuglien to the Tavares line would give this team an awesome 1-2 punch. After that, we certainly have enough players of at least third or fourth line quality to make those lines as effective as we need them to be.

That said, I agree that the needs on defense are greater. Most defensemen need time to develop. Ness, DeHaan, and Hamonic are high quality defensive prospects who will be important parts of our championship core. Hillen, Kessel, Niemi, Klementeyev, and Kohn are all potential quality defenders as well. We still lack, as you say, the big time franchise defender—although I wouldn’t discount the possibility that DeHaan and / or Ness could become that. The most celebrated defender of this era is about the same size as DeHaan after all and—well how many Norris trophies does Nick have on his shelf?

So, as I see it, this team has two critical needs to complete that championship core. We need at least one elite quality LW and one elite quality defender. Unless Garth pulls a rabbit out of his hat or the hockey fairy waves her wand at us, we will only be able to meet one of those needs in the 2010 draft. We will presumably have to meet the other in FA or in a trade. So which one do we draft for and which do we trade or sign for is the real question as I see it.

BTW, thanks for the compliment—although the writeups are compiled from various published sources!!!

I'm absolutely torn

Heh, can I punt?

If Teemu makes a big impact this year, I might be inclined to add another dynamic forward. So much depends on another year of data — not just of the draftees, but also of our existing prospects. But I greedily want an arsenal of forwards.

That said, our biggest organizational need may be a D with size who can also play the game.

Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.

by Dominik on Sep 4, 2009 2:42 PM EDT reply actions

I think that Teemu is of an elite quality as are JT, KO, JB, and maybe SB. We have a real depth of decent forwards, we just happen to be one shy in the elite quality variety.

So—Garth’s shopping list:

One elite LW

One elite defender

Several young quality defenders to fill the roster spots now held by Sutton, Meyer, Witt, and Martinek until our prospects are ready

Maybe one tough and talented LW to help Hunts dig the puck out of the boards for JT.

Whoops… fax that compliment to TSR, then. Haha.

Whether we grab either one of the two – or Hall, or Kabanov, or any other blue-chipper [not necessarily with a Top-5 pick, either… we may see some modest improvements next season] – we’ll be a better team for it.

by pickups on Sep 4, 2009 2:53 PM EDT reply actions

My focus on Teemu and Cam is predicated on the assumption that Hall and Kabanov will be 1-2 and that we will not be in either spot AND that getting into either spot would cost too much. I see us as finishing anywhere from 5-15 and having enough draft pick assets to get at least one top five pick regardless of where we finish. I see these two as likely to fall between 3 and 6 and thus see the Isles as having a resonably good chance to draft one or the other.

An alternative strategy—if we finished in the top five based upon the lottery and still had all of our pick assets—would be to draft Fowler and then use our pick assets to move back up into the first round and maybe get Victor Ohman—a very underrated Swedish LW who plays on a less well known SEL team.

by BCISLEMAN on Sep 4, 2009 3:02 PM EDT up reply actions

But—as Dominik hinted—if we do not draft Teemu, think of the drama we will miss. Imagine the LightHouse rafters (do modern arenas have rafters?) shaking as the fans chant TEEE—-MUUU after another brilliant goal!!!

by BCISLEMAN on Sep 4, 2009 3:05 PM EDT reply actions

BTW other sources besides TSR include THN’s 2009 Draft Preview and several online descriptions of the two players.

by BCISLEMAN on Sep 4, 2009 3:20 PM EDT reply actions

Firstly, it would appear that Pulkinnen is actually a Right-Winger (as it says in the TSR profile and look at the video/photos of him playing) not a Left-Winger, as listed in your story.

Clearly, looking at the TSR and other like reports it would appear that the draft has more top-end talent at forward than on the D. Insofar as my selection would go, I feel like although the good adage “draft the best player available” could be applicable, that the Isles need a stud defenceman – whether that is Fowler or Gudbranson, I think that would be a better selection long term.

When it comes to evaluating Pulkinnen’s talent you’ve got to compare him to Granlund – who plays the same league and is being hyped as well. Regardless, hopefully this season will shake out the draft order with a bit more certainty.

by HugoAgogo on Sep 4, 2009 8:05 PM EDT reply actions

Several sources list him as a LW….my guess is that he can play either wing. Granlund is very talented…but even smaller than Pulkkinen who will presumably bulk up a bit by the time his Jokerit contract concludes in 2011. And Granlund is a C. My view is that a C should be even bigger than a wing ideally. Moreover, what I have read convinces me that Pulkkinnen would be a better fit for the Bailey line.

Probably we will need to go for a defender and I am convinced that Fowler is the guy if we can get him. If we cannot and Pulkkinen is still on the board…he’s the guy.

One other thing...

I was unable to find it for the purposes of this post, but I have seen a video of Teemu in the locker room mugging it up and imitating a video performance by a pop star. if you look at some of our potential stars, Josh has a bit of a personality about him, but the others really don’t that I know of. This is just one of those intangible things that don’t show up on a stat sheet, but you need a guy like Teemu to shake things up a bit.

by BCISLEMAN on Sep 4, 2009 9:09 PM EDT reply actions

I just hope that the Isles do good enough that we are worried about who is left when our turn comes up.

SHOOOOOOOT IT!!!! Anon

We should be better. Just getting better goaltending will reduce our astronomic GA total. And adding JT on offense should make everyone better and increase our enemic GF total. The wildcards are: (1) Will DP return and how effective will he be? (2) Will we be able to reduce our league-leading lost games to injury total? and (3) Will players like KO, JB, and SB finally have breakout seasons and will there be some pleasant surprises from lesser knowns like Joensuu, Figren, and Moulson? Depending on how those three variables go, we will likely finish anywhere between the fifth worst and fifteenth worst. At 15 of course, we would be a playoff team. At 5, since I think it is possible to move up four spaces in the lottery, we could get the #1 overall again—although it is unlikely. My guess is that we will be somewhere in between and that, with a couple of draft picks, we can move into the top five and have a shot at Pulkkinen or Fowler.

by BCISLEMAN on Sep 5, 2009 11:32 AM EDT up reply actions

And, going back to my earlier comment, if Phil Kessel DID insist on playing with brother Blake (and I wouldn’t discount it as they seem symbiotic….look and talk alike and Blake decided to play hockey because of Phil and undoubtedly decided to move east to play at UNH because of him) and agreed to $6 mil for two years only requiring a second round pick in compensation…in that case, forget Teemu and get Cam.

by BCISLEMAN on Sep 5, 2009 11:44 AM EDT reply actions

I picked $3 mil because it would not require us to give up a first round pick, but when you think about it, $3 mil is fair. He had two sub par seasons and then has a good season with 60 points. Nice, but not spectacular especially given the cast he has around him. And then he has an injury and won’t be ready until December…and who knows how well he’ll perform then. Players get overhyped and thus overpaid all too often. And then owners complain about player salaries!!! Two years, $6 mil, and a second round pick to Boston…and then we don’t need Teemu and can draft Cam.

by BCISLEMAN on Sep 5, 2009 1:36 PM EDT up reply actions

But if he insists on going to the Island (which I don’t think is out of the question), that would change the picture. Garth would not and should not give up our first rounder this year. I could see him giving up a first and maybe a second rounder in next year’s draft as it is weak. If PK will not sign anywhere but the Island, Garth is in the driver’s seat.

by BCISLEMAN on Sep 5, 2009 4:37 PM EDT reply actions

As I pointed out on another thread, it would be great if Garth pursued some limited options consistent with rebuilding to improve the team. Perhaps if there is some good news coming out of this next meeting on the 22nd, Wang might give him the green light to go after Babchuk, sign Phil Kessel to an offer sheet, and trade Park for Byfuglien.

The other scenario is also of interest. We stay with the guys we have and give everyone a shot. Maybe do the Park-Byfuglien thing, but otherwise just trade Weight, Biron, and Sutton for picks.

Then we fall into the bottom five, catch lightning in a bottle and get boosted to #1 overall again. Phoenix is just a few spots back and wants Hall bad enough to trade their first rounder from Calgary which either doesn’t make the playoffs or bows out in the first round. With a top five pick, a mid first round pick, four second rounders, and two third rounders, we have more than enough assets to draft Cam AND Teemu.

Boston will be desperate for cap space and will likely be happy to talk turkey regarding Stuart who they will not be able to sign. I am guessing that LA may have done well enough to impress Kovalchuk and LA may, in turn, be impressed enough with him to drop Frolov. If we can sign him to a two to three year deal, that should give Teemu enough time to fulfill his Jokerit contract and get seasoned at Bridgeport.

Fowler, Hamonic, and MacDonald should be well blooded by the start of the 2011-12 season as well and, along with Stuart, should be more than adequate replacements for Witt, Martinek, Sutton, and Meyer. And the rebuild should be completed shortly as DeHaan, Ness, Niemi, the younger Kessel, and Klementyev join the defensive core while Streit and Gervais are eventually traded for picks.

Koskinnen and Nilsson should be completely ready and, if DP is healthy and is performing well, his contract will be short enough that he would look very attractive to Colorado if their goaltending is still unresolved. A first and a third round pick from them together with a first and third rounder for Streit and a first or second rounder for Gervais will keep the flow of talent going. Also players like Anders Lee, Casey Cizikas, and Matt Martin should be pushing for roster spots which will add complexity and depth. And then Garth’s five year plan—begun in 2008—will have been completed. Let the Drive for Five recommence!!!
