Off to Kansas City for Islanders hockey, wee wee

This ship is fully operational yet lacks an anchor tenant.

So yeah, big day all around for the Islanders. For the insignificant yet on-ice side, as previously mentioned I'll be in Kansas City and will file a "report" after the game, while something a little more important is going on. Hey, that's how things roll; K.C. can be a fun town.

For the game, we know John Tavares won't be there, and we know the Brothers Westgarth will. Josh Bailey and Dwayne Roloson are the name-player bones thrown to the K.C. crowd from the Isles end. Also reported: Jon Sim on a line with Greg Moore and Jesse Joensuu. Katie Strang has the rest of the lineup here. ("K.C., are you ready for preseason hockey baby?!"). For the perspective of those being tossed like pawns in the pro sports relocation game, here's a Hockey in K.C. blog I enjoy. (Another I originally omitted: PucKChaser.)

Meanwhile, for the Island-centric bigger picture:

Once again, good luck to all. I'm 'onna watch me some exhibition hockey.

KC doesn't look like much of a viable venue at this point

Reading around sounds like they had to give away a ton of tickets and the place still won’t be filled to capacity.

The LightHouse Project doesn’t look to be going anywhere either. The TOH has gotten really ugly. In recent days BD Gallof has released some disturbing news about Wangs play to sell off a good portion of it. Doesn’t look like Wang is bargaining in good faith with the fans and the TOH either.

Not that the TOH doesn’t have their knees deep in shit either.

Get ready for it cause this team looks like it’s gonna be on the move. Biggest mistake the LightHouse supporters made here was assuming that Murray would eventually see things their way and not make a move to bolster up her contender in the coming election. HUGE MISTAKE!!!!

Murray has her reelection locked in and no playing her hand accordingly. You absolutely can not trust these politicians no matter what and need to constantly pressure them on all sides.

And why do folks in Garden City get to dictate what happens in Uniondale anyways?

However this is also a city

that turned out 14,000 fans a night in the 90’s for an IHL team. Hockey has be building in KC over the decades since the NHL Scouts were in town.

IHL and AHL hockey are different beasts

THe Isles last season sold at 85% capacity at home which is about 14,000 a night, And this is for an NHL team that was dead last in the league and the average ticket price at about $52 a game. AHL and IHL tickets are not going to run you that much. Also throw in parking and concessions.

by Chickendirt on Sep 22, 2009 5:31 PM EDT up reply actions

agreed

The best seats were $18 and parking was $5.

My point is that the town isn’t wholly unfamiliar with hockey.

KC isn’t the perfect market for hockey, I’ll admit, but that is not to say it couldn’t do well there. It’s a town of close to $2MM people that has a lot of transplants from other parts of the country. There are multiple rinks all over town. It could work. I’d like to see the Isles stay put personally.

No hometown team

Hi guys,
I’ve lived in KC since ’94 and am a transplanted Easterner.

I’ve seen hockey come and go through KC. We had a very good IHL team when the IHL was AAA level hockey. The Blades were the top farm club of the Sharks and then the Canucks toward the end.
Important to remember that the LEAGUE folded…not our team. The Blades were well-supported.

When preseason games involve the Blues, the attendance has been good. But, since AEG runs Sprint Center, we’ve had the Kings shoved down our throat and we don’t really have a hometown team in the game. It would be nice if our preseason games only involved the Blues, Blackhawks or Wild. Attendance would be better.

Not sure we’re a viable market for an NHL team and I’m convinced we’ll never find out.

I blog about this stuff, too.

Hey, thanks. Your impression is my impression from the outside…a different story if teams locals actually cared about were there. K.C.’s certainly no dynamite market, but with the right owner the NHL or AHL could (and have) do worse.

Not so sure how viable an AHL team is in that arena however.

I’ve been in a few rockin barns for AHL teams (notably the Sound Tigers up in Bridgeport) It will hold maybe 9,000 and is perfect venue.

KC much like any city will support a winning product. There have been strong high-school leagues for 15 years now. (I know that’s not a long time compared to ‘traditional’ markets, but considering the fact that Dallas and 1 and a half sheets of ice when the Stars defected from up North we’re well ahead of the curve. College hockey has also really taken a foothold. I know for a fact that Univeristy of Kansas hockey draws well despite only being a Div II club team.

I’d REALLY hate to see a team like the Isles move. Much like the Pittsburgh deal was bitter sweet fpr KC. I was bummed we didn’t get such a great team with so much potential, but I was glad to know that the good fans of Pittsburgh would be keeping their team. I wish the Panthers could bug out instead. It’s sad what ownership has done to the fans since their brief heyday in 1997.

I’m hoping to! Had it many times, but I’m not sure if I can squeeze it in. This trip was already kind of unwise and pigeon-holed into a tight schedule…which often makes for the best trips.

You don’t live in Long Island? Wow. I had no idea. And I’d never be able to tell, because your blog is very quality.

Oh, and Newcastle?!?!?!?!? Say it ain’t so. I love Newcastle, clearly because I don’t have enough disappointment in my life from the Isles, Jets and Mets.

Haha, thanks! I appreciate it. I try to remind people from time to time that I’m not local, but then I try not to beat people over the head with it, too. Not sure where the best balance is.

Newcastle will be back … surely … some day. So far, so good anyway. I hate that they dropped (for obvious reasons), because now it’s that much harder to keep an eye on things.

I’m almost glad they dropped in a way. It enabled them to drop the overpaid names that weren’t performing. They were almost like the Rangers circa 2002 at the end of their Premier League run. Yeah, it sucks that they’re harder to keep track of, but at least we have the Internet and shady live feeds to keep us in the loop.

On the lighthouse hearings today

I’m following it on Botta’s blog and do not like what I am hearing. This is very sickening stuff. WTF is wrong with the TOH?

Are they really this out to lunch?

Of course I’m only getting one side of the issue but this is not looking good at all. I get a feeling that the future of this team on Long Island is looking very bleak.

I made the mistake of reading some of that before heading to the game, and it left me with a pit in my stomach when I got there. Answering other people’s questions there — and talking to a bummed Coyotes fan — didn’t help. But I can’t help thinking there’s some way the team has to remain after all the grandstanding is done. That’s where I’m resting my hope, anyway.

They may be better off in Queens anyway. Queens wants them and has better access to mass transit. Boost the fanbase big time.

Kansas City hockey

At one time, there was a Kansas City Scouts NHL team. They only lasted a few years. I don’t know what has changed to think that town would now support another NHL team. The Chiefs & the Royals are each in the down part of a sports team’s life cycle. Are people going to spend $50+ per ticket for another dog team?

Baumbach reports 3k for the game tonight

Doesn’t look like the Isles are heading to KC anytime soon.

That’s sad for a city pining for an NHL franchise.

by Chickendirt on Sep 22, 2009 10:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Baumbach is insane if he thinks that was 3K. The lower bowl was close to full; they had curtains shutting off most of the top deck.

There have been other pro hockey teams in KC…and they have failed as well. If the Light House won’t fly, Queens is the place for the Isles to go in 2015.

Looks like Bailey and Tambellini are both off to a good start

Good for both those guys.

I really wanna see Tambellini put something together and have a really good season. Feel for the guy as I think he caught a raw deal with Nolan. Hate to see young players go through that.

He pulls it together my hats off to him.

I had thought that they should have drafted Kulikov.

by BCISLEMAN on Sep 22, 2009 11:19 PM EDT reply actions

I was there as well

It was way more than 3k. I originally had $10 seats up there I ordered a while back, I guess they just decided the other day to close the lower bowl. Moved me down to the $61 seat area along with everyone else. The lower bowl was full in most places and there were a few fans in the only area open in the upper deck.

Also, fans cheered for both sides, booed both sides, there were way too many fights, and dumb people. Chick yelled for a power play goal for someone I guess when they were both full strength. But it could have been worse, trust me.

And I was the only guy in the arena with a Wild Gaborik jersey on, as most other people have hopefully just trashed theirs.

by TheSmokingPun on Sep 22, 2009 11:27 PM EDT reply actions

LOL. I missed you! I started to keep track of every team’s jersey I’d seen, and the Wild was one I didn’t spot. When I saw a Coyotes one (and even ended up sitting next to a Yotes fan), I was sure I’d see every one.

Thanks for the report. Very nice building. I laughed when they announced icing over the P.A. I cried when the guy behind me was telling his kid, “Yeah, you can elbow in hockey.”

Yeah, it seemed like Special Olympics Day at the game. I was sitting next to this couple originally from Buffalo but now live in Omaha who were into the game as much as I was. I was also pleased that our fans didn’t hold back with the “home of the CHIEFS!” part at the end of the National Anthem.

Also the PA guy needs to be fired, he might be the worst in the biz.

Oh yeah

I was in a blue Islanders Bossy #22 jersey, if any other attendees drift into see this.

Other Isles jerseys spotted (remember, this is K.C., not the Coliseum): Turgeon, LaFontaine, tons of Yashins, Peca, DiPietro, Guerin and … LINDEN!

Also one last tidbit, back in 03, on a Saturday night, September 27th, the Blackhawks and Blues sold out Kemper with 17,285 on hand. That was before we were even in the chase for a new team and there was no such thing as the Sprint Center.

Move the game to a Friday or Saturday night next year!

No Surprise

It is no surprise we did not come out en mass! The last two teams to play “games” (Penguins, Predators) with possible moves have left a bitter taste. Get real stop toying with us and bring us our own team.

by mcnkcmo on Sep 23, 2009 10:19 AM EDT reply actions

agreed

The attendance was about 9,700. I think that number is about right. It was on a Tuesday night with two teams that play 1,200 miles away on a night where Zach Greinke is gunning for his Cy Young.

Frankly, the Isles or the Kings are big draws in the KC area. The vast majority of hockey fans in KC are Blues fans, others are Stars, Avalanche, or Blackhawk fans. After than it’s a pretty good mix of Penguins, Red Wings, Rangers, Leafs fans.

There’s definitely a bitter taste in the mouths of Kansas Citians right now. We were played by Mario and the Pens. Straight up. He even admitted it. The Predators dangled the possibility. Our prospective owner Boots Billagio sold out and took up ownership stake in the Pens and voted to keep them in Nashville. Then Bombardier used KC as leverage against Montreal in building a huge aircraft plant at a time when all the automobile factories are closing around town.

There’s a lot more to this story than just an attendance number.

For perspective, the attendance about equalled game #25 at the Coliseum last season—-the only game to dip under 10,000. On the one hand, it was a regular season game on the other ticket prices were a lot higher than $10! And, of course, the team did not have JT and was on its way to the worst point total in the NHL.

by BCISLEMAN on Sep 23, 2009 1:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Nashville is a basket case to be sure. They have the core in place to be really good, but the ownership doesn’t want to spend money on star talent…so they will probably never be a serious contender. A good AHL affiliate might be what KC needs…and maybe periodic Blues and Wild games.
