Islanders Alberta tour: Here be Flames. And Theo Fleury.

New York Islanders at Calgary Flames

       Lh-top_medium              Cal-atl_medium

9 p.m. EDT | [Corporation of some sort] Saddledome

Watch: Live stream at Flames official site and nhl.com

Update: Still no lineup for tonight, but when it is  out, you can bet it will be here. The Isles need to worry about being run out of the building by a pretty NHL-like Flames lineup tonight.

The Flames are playing in front of their home fans, debuting big summer signing Jay Bouwmeester, welcoming back fan-favorite Theo Fleury, and dressing a fairly competitive lineup. Expect an atmosphere. If the Islanders' job aspirants want to make a good impression, tonight would be a good time.

A lot of teams have made roster cuts already -- at least with juniors, plus a former Islander: Shawn Bates is gone from Colorado, though Dave Scatchard and Mark Parrish remain in Vacouver. The Islanders, to this point, have not made cuts. (Given my luck, that means they'll announce cuts right after I hit "publish" on this post.) But if you saw Calvin de Haan last night versus Edmonton, you don't want them to make cuts yet: The dreamer in you probably got a taste of why they moved up to draft him, and why he might stick around in camp awhile.

Speculating here, but the Islanders might be trying to get through this stretch of four games in four nights (including the rookie game Tuesday) to get everyone a look before making the inevitable reassignments.

This will be the official post for tonight's game, so I'll update it as events warrant. No roster yet, but if you see one, do post in comments. (I'd keep an eye on beat reporter Katie Strang's Newsday blog.) Obviously no Sean Bergenheim or Doug Weight thanks to the official launch of Groin Injury Watch. But I'd expect a lot of new faces who weren't in the lineup last night. Nathan Lawson got the full game last night; will it be our own "monster" Mikko Koskinen's turn for a debut tonight?

Speaking of Mark Parrish

I’m beginning to wonder if it would have been worth signing that guy. I have to wonder if Weight can do it all himself and would benefit from having Parrish to take on some of the tutoring duties. As a player I would agree that Parrish is finished. He’s not what he was seven years ago.

Last he was here I really liked the fact that he was constantly communicating with guys like Bergenheim. The kids seem to like him and respect him.

Wouldn’t be a terrible thing to bring him back.

by Chickendirt on Sep 17, 2009 6:19 PM EDT reply actions

That’s true, he was a great presence then (as well as a good winger back in the day). Before he got an invite I would’ve said no way. But — and maybe this is his own job-lobbying talking — he did talk about “finally” seeing a skating coach about improving his skating over the summer.

If you think about Weight likely being out of the lineup from time to time, it gives you even more reason to think he’d be a good guy to have around.

Bailey to Smith with the tip

1-1.

Okposo proves that he’s the biggest pair of panties in the game going after haley for a clean hit on Backlund.

Oh, you’re never livin’ that one down!

So you’re getting the feed? I got a “cannot be shown in your area,” which is bizarrely ass backward. I can’t imagine which corporate maker is vested in me not seeing this game.

No idea. Hit was clean

I don’t think the Ref saw it either.

I think they figured it was a hit by a Rookie and Jokinen responded so it must be dirty.

Nice! Moulson baby

Good to see Kipper in 2008 form.

Embarassing for Calgary to be down 3-1 in this one.

OHHHHH Fights!!!! Phaneud leveled Okposo.

Late hit by Phaneuf

Ugly.

This could get ugly.

We might see our first Martin fight.

I wonder if Sutter is engaging in head hunting. Last season it was Neilson this season it is Okposo.

I know, sounds like conspiracy theory crap. But I’m beginning to wonder here.

Looks like I may have to re-write that season preview.

Looks like what we all were concerned about has come true.

I don’t think we see Okposo till December.

I’m really pissed right now.

Gordon needs to send a message here. He can’t afford another Mottau pass here.

Strange, this is the Calgary broadcast and they won't replay the hit

Makes me wonder if it’s not as clean as the announcers claim it is.

by Chickendirt on Sep 17, 2009 10:21 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah, it’s bizarre. Welcome to Gary’s world.

Many people on Twitter saying it was a clean/legal hit, but it might be an echo chamber. I don’t see how anyone has a replay.

by Dominik on Sep 17, 2009 10:23 PM EDT up reply actions

That's because the annoucers are saying someone else

Who is supposedly respected in judgeing hits (Don’t remember who it is as I’ve never heard of them) claimed it was clean. This was after the announcers said Okposo was away from the puck when the hit was delivered.

by Chickendirt on Sep 17, 2009 10:25 PM EDT up reply actions

I hope they’re not saying Robert Dirk, a very rough and hardly replacement-level defenseman from back when.

I smell a suspension coming

Somewhere on YouTube that hit will surface.

Like Mottau on Neilsen the NHL will raise hell and have it removed.

(he never hit his head rationale)

Phaneuf will get one preseason game.

I wonder if it will even get that. But yeah, if there’s any suspension, it will be the traditional worthless wrist-slap.

I assume it’s just the arena feed, and for some reason the NHL or clubs want no replays that might show refs to be in error.

That was hilarious! I thought there was some audio/video delay, because he was raving like a WWF guy about Jaffrey raining punches when it was Haley landing punches the other way. That’s the guy who said it was a clean hit, too, FWIW.

I would to

Little does that dumbass know is that this team is auditioning for a goon. Not smart to throw a hit like that in a meaningless preseason game.

Martin gets one more crack at the guy.

Anytime Jokinen is one of your "go to guys"

It’s relevant to question the heart of that team.

Calgary blows in the post season cause they don’t have any heart. They don’t dig.

Jokinen is indicitive of one those kinds of players.

I was really surprised D. Sutter bet so much on Jokinen being able to deliver when it mattered. Not only the trade and term, but the fact that squeezed them against the cap last year.

I saw a split second clip and it looked like elbow to the head.

by Chickendirt on Sep 17, 2009 11:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Thanks!

Hmmm…okay. I see it as circumstantial. Phaneuf was looking to destroy — skating ass first into the likely path — but the thing that sent KO off was being bumped off course at the last moment by the other Flame.

Actually, this is the worst kind of hit: When a teammate sets a screen or pushes you into a waiting hitter. I’d say Phaneuf was careless and clueless, but I don’t think he could steer away.

I can’t tell whether there was any elbow/arm action.

Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.

by Dominik on Sep 17, 2009 11:33 PM EDT up reply actions

I just watched that

That was ALL elbow.

His elbow is out the whole way and follows through.

Okposo probably would not have head involvment there with the arm in. He probable gets hung up and over Phanuef.

That’s a dirty hit.

by Chickendirt on Sep 17, 2009 11:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Guess I wouldn't mind seeing OT and a shootout at this point

Doesn’t look like Phaneuf leaves his feet until after contact, but he definitely got his elbow up. Even Bob Nystrom said Kyle had his head down coming across the middle.

by FireGarthSnow on Sep 17, 2009 11:33 PM EDT reply actions

Oh, he had his head down. But this is one of those cases I can’t fault him for — two guys pushing you from the side, the puck gets lost in tight, your head’s going to go down; it’s whether a third guy is waiting as predator that destroys you.

I’m a full believer in “Keep your head up,” but instances like this make me wonder where the alleged player respect is.

Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.

by Dominik on Sep 17, 2009 11:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Okposo has to keep his head up but watch Phaneuf's elbow

That was dirty and he was driving with it BEFORE he even hit em.

He even follows through with it.

I’ve never seen shoulder hits like that.

by Chickendirt on Sep 17, 2009 11:41 PM EDT up reply actions

You’re right. I was watching Okposo’s head, but when I looked at Phaneuf the whole way, he puts his elbow up. Prick.

Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.

by Dominik on Sep 17, 2009 11:42 PM EDT up reply actions

He should get 12 AT LEAST for that hit

He rewound that at least 30 times just to make sure at the point of impact to where Phaneuf sets up.

Clean hit Okposo glances off the other way or gets hung up on his back.

by Chickendirt on Sep 17, 2009 11:44 PM EDT up reply actions

OMG!!!

Watching that even more he’s linging up his elbow the whole way.

by Chickendirt on Sep 17, 2009 11:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed, but I am throughly disappointed in Gordon’s response. Who cares if we give up another PP goal. Someone should have been shadowing Phaneuf every time he came on the ice and nailed him.

by FireGarthSnow on Sep 17, 2009 11:42 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m not honestly. There’s been four fights since then, at least two that tried to take on Phaneuf, and the rest of the game has been PP or PK, PP or PK.

It almost reminds me of Weight’s hit on Sutter last season, only Weight kept his arm tucked in as opposed to Phaneuf who le t the elbow loose on Kyle head. Okposo was leaning forward to get the puck and wham.

by FireGarthSnow on Sep 17, 2009 11:49 PM EDT reply actions

Exactly. Weight, who rarely has open ice hits, knows how to make them. Phaneuf, who does very little else, does not.

I don’t know. Would Donald Brashear have prevented this? Would Brashear have done any better than Haley and Martin at trying to exact justice? In my book, as long as you have guys willing to step up in such situations, you don’t need a one-dimensional goon. But I’m in the minority there.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
