Around SBN: Jeremy Lin's Game-Winner Was Incredible, Worth Remembering

I'd been thinking about constructing an argument about why plunging for Phil Kessel -- as discussed here recently -- would be the wrong move for the Isles (assuming he wants $4 million-plus, assuming the compensation needed).

Essentially, I'm against that money and term for a kid who has some character red flags that he'd bring around a very young Islanders locker room. As it turns out, I don't need to make that argument, because CBC's Elliotte Friedman already has.

Interesting piece. We do have a center in Josh Bailey who might make an excellent partner for Kessel. My take: put a bookmark in this one. If he is a UFA in two years when, hopefully his brother Blake is NHL-ready, let’s see where he’s at and whether it would make sense. Right now, this article makes it sound like he and Gaborik would be just what the Rangers need. All it would take after that would be for them to also sign Heatley and they would have easily the most poisonous locker room of all time!!!

Kessel was kind of an enigma in Boston up until last season.

I’m not a fan of the risk involved bringing over a player like that. Granted he’s a very talented young guy but there is no guarentee he keeps up his pace just based on one good year. A few years ago I recall folks getting crazy about the possiblity of bringing in CheeChoo. Who wants that guy now?

Scoring is a nice commodity to have but there are a handful of players that do it consistently and are worth the risk. I don’t think there is enough information on Kessel to include him in that category right now. I’d rather take that risk on a guy like Max Afenigenov (I hate spelling that last name with a passion) who you can sign for a year or two and not cost you that much.

That’s the rub for me: Few players worth that risk, and not enough data or margin for error to know if he’s one.

Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.

The two things I like about him other than his talent are the brother connection and the fact that he is a young developing player as many of the Islanders are. Wouldn’t want Afinogenov. He seems to get injured a lot and his point total is all over the map.
