"It was beyond a surprise. It was a complete shock," Shanahan said. "I still don't know a lot about. I don't know enough. I want to learn more."
"... I don't know why this needed to be done so hastily," Shanahan said. "In less than two weeks we're going to have 700 players in training camp. When things are done that quickly, it makes me nervous. I don't know what the need was to do it now."
>>Very interesting reaction from Brendan Shanahan in Richard Chere's piece for the Star-Ledger.
As Chere notes, Shanahan is a respected voice in this game -- we may even have him to thank for finally ending the Reign of Obstruction. That makes this fan worry.

I posted this on Mr. Botta’s blog, but I’ll post it here as well:
This is just one more silly move to hurt the NHL and the Islanders. Hargrove is not the kind of union organizer/supporter/de facto leader you want at a time when although growth has come steadily, the league is still in a very critical stage where it cannot afford to lose followers. Beyond that it opens up the potential for another lockout amongst other things and it doesn’t hand the Isles any favors when promoting a Lighthouse project that is at its heart, paramount to keeping the Islanders in NY. Without even considering that for a moment, given the nature of the world economy right now, hockey wasn’t doing too bad for itself (especially the players). What’s the be said when even Shanny has mixed feelings on the matter? or that Mr. Flatley followed Kelly right out the door on principle itself. You know who is enjoying this? The KHL.
You know who is enjoying this? The KHL.
No doubt.
Fully agree the current CBA is pretty sweet for players, considering the low-revenue status of this league. They have liberalized free agency, guaranteed contracts, no-trade clauses available — and 30 teams of jobs when only a handful of teams are actually profitable.
I understand issues like the Olympics, long-term deals, maybe even expansion fees are negotiable — it sure sounded like Kelly knew that, too — but if the lead players behind this want to go into hardline war mode even at the cost of another work stoppage, they’re likely to lose clubs and, as a result, jobs. Fewer jobs means even less salary leverage for anyone but the superstars, so there would be even more “NHL veterans” waiting on the sidelines for an offer.
They’ll say, “Oh, there was a diligent review of Kelly, all the player reps signed off on it,” but the way it went down in one surprising weekend, the way it went into the wee hours of the night, the way clearly a select few were behind the direction of this review — it all wreaks of poor practice and poor internal politics.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
