Around SBN: Leandro Damiao Is Still Really Good

"... For seven years, Charles Wang has committed himself, both emotionally and financially to keeping the Islanders here ... I am a native Islander, and I support the Lighthouse project. And I don't believe there is any place that the Islanders should be playing but here on Long Island."

Gary Bettman at today's Lighthouse events, eliciting an ovation rarely heard outside of NHL Board of Governors meetings.

In Fairness, when you allow Mike Milbury free reign of your wallet, your going to lose some money.

Heh, true. It’s been a steep, looong learning curve for Mr. Wang.

Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.

08 Isles from Forbes
Interestingly, the Islanders bring in more revenue then they spend on players by about 10-15 mill. Also from looking at the 06 list the Pre Wang islanders actually made money most years.

Interesting list. Reminds me that something we haven’t heard about is what kind of lease would arise for the new building. It’s a given that the current Coliseum lease with SMG is the worst — I assume a different arrangement is part of the whole Lighthouse conception, but I wonder what language they have for that.

The pre-Wang Islanders: Profitable, perhaps, by paying nothing in salaries and keeping things trim for a sale. Overall from those graphs it looks like payroll roughly doubled under Wang (to keep up with the poor Joneses) while revenues did not quite follow suit. I think Wang bought an asset whose value was eroded by previous owners, and he spent his learning curve years taking different stabs at how to restore it (while also assuming he’d get a new building much sooner).
