Around SBN: Ellenberger vs. Sanchez Heats Up, Hughes Talks Retirement

"I’m just looking forward and preparing like I can win a spot on the Islanders this year. I don’t want anyone to take my job. If I don’t make it, I’m gonna go down swinging."

>>Possible opening night enforcer Joel Rechlicz, speaking to Chris Botta.

First, whether he's ready for a regular responsible shift or not, I love this attitude.

Second: Don't you miss the days when a bunch of minor league enforcers would slug it out for a job during training camp? Those fights were often better than regular season ones.

Steve Webb Influence

He sounds a little like he has some energy/heart to him. I could see him contributing on a regular basis. Hopefully he has enough energy to last somewhere around 70 games. I read that Trots is spending a little extra time on the ice with him after practice. The Isles are putting a lot of hope on him for this season.

Webb 2.0 would work

I think he has potential — and could maybe fill the role at the NHL level this year. He certainly has the hardest part down, that being the mental approach and the willingness to fight.

I’m of two minds: Either the Islanders are hellbent on push him all the way this year, or they’re just pushing him as far as he can go as part of his training, and are fully prepared to (I hope) add someone from the free agent/waiver aftermarket during training camp.

P.S. Welcome and thanks for joining in!

This guy is gonna have his hands full.

Reading Botta’s blog today looks like they are gonna try and get Ullstrom to play this year. Given their need for size looks like they might want to rush a few guys to fulfill this need. Not a good thing.

Even Ullstrom feels he’s not ready.

Can’t understand why they are fighting over money with Matt Martin either. That guy is gonna get his face pummeled if he’s another enfrcer here.

I didn’t get the impression they were going to push Ulstrom or Martin all the way up to the NHL — that would be crazy.

But I’m still figuring the enforcer role is a cheap commodity they’ll beef up once they’ve seen their prospects who can actually skate. Hope I’m not wrong.

Oooh, Logan says so

Have to run “is believed to be” through your Beatwriter Translator 3000, but here’s Logan:

Garth Snow is believed to still be shopping for help in the enforcement department. Giant Andrew Peters is available, but he’s limited as an actual hockey player. Snow most likely will explore the trade route to add a legitimate veteran enforcer while the Islanders continue working to bring along Joel Rechlicz in that role. It’s uncertain whether Snow will try to bring in a player on the NHL roster or park another tough guy at Bridgeport, but something probably will happen before training camp opens in September.

That’s what I hoped or at least assumed. I wonder if they want to go the cheap route because of budget and the possibility that even a $2 million enforcer will spend a lot nights getting under 5 minutes from Gordon.

The quote from Botta
Player of the Day I (aka Let’s Start Over-Hyping…): 2008 fourth round pick David Ullstrom tells Point Blank that next summer will be decision time on the beginning of his career in North America. A 6-3 forward from Team Sweden at the World Junior Championships, Ullstrom was promoted to second-line duty with HV-71 at the end of his SEL season. We ranked him last week at No. 6 among Islanders prospects in junior, college and Europe and he has been a standout through four days of minicamp.

He has a year and a player option remaining on his SEL contract.

"Let’s see how this season goes. It’s a full year of playing against men in the Elite League," Ullstrom said today. "I still need the experience. Last year I had a good World Juniors and then got an opportunity on the second line with HV into the playoffs."

But do you eventually want to play in the North America, David?

"Of course," said Ullstrom. "I want to come here so bad. As soon as everyone thinks I’m ready, I’ll be here. But I want to be ready."

Take my word for it. They want him here next year.

Take from it what you will. I think the fact that there are question marks in the goons department means Snow and Co need to consider all comers. My problem is that they may royally F*** one of these kids up just to add some protection.

They need it badly.

Gotcha – I just took that to mean “here” = North America rather than adding size to the NHL lineup now. The physical element is interesting since the “code” is quite different in the Euro leagues vs. the NHL.
