[Updated] LHinks: Gomez goes, Bouwmeester signs, Heatley waffles

[Updated in comments with Roloson post-signing discussion]

The NHL passed into its free agent frenzy period overnight er, today at noon, but the biggest names moved last night -- and we're not talking househunting in Vancouver, either. The big stuff, followed by Islanders bits after the jump:

Star-divide

  • Scott Burnside looks at the younger, physical invitees to USA Olympic camp. Obviously I'm happy Kyle Okposo is there, but that roster excites me overall.
  • At the end of Greg Logan's article today he says Islanders pick Anton Klementyev will play for London in the OHL. Giggity.
  • Remember those whispers that the Islanders knew Calvin de Haan was on the radar of teams picking before 16? B.D. and Doug each came back from the draft backing that story up [IslandersIndependent] [IslesOfficial'sOutlook].
  • It's funny with the draft: We go in with our average rankings for all these prospects, but the complex routes of communication mean there is great disagreement about where some of these kids rank, and great misdirection by GMs who think they've got a line on a real gem. When a GM/scouting team beats a rival to the prize, they're not going to sour relations by coming out and saying so. But sometimes the real circumstances filter out...

Later: A more in-depth look at the mixed bag of free agent goalie candidates we've been tossing around...

    Heatley's a tool

After seeing what type of a person this guy is, I hope the Rags get him and he destroys any positive chemistry they have in the locker room. Go for it sather!!

That would be perfect. It’s pretty amazing how he’s knifing the Senators; I imagine he’s going to get booed in a lot of places around the league after this.

I can safely say that fake Bob McKenzie was none too pleased with him on Twitter last night. I believe “asshat” was the term utilized. LOL!

He just took Ottawa for four million that's owed him today

That’s why he didn’t take the rush trade to Edmonton (also probably doesn’t want to play there).

    They ain't wirth that much

    glad they are stuck there.

Now I can’t wait to them resign the choker Luongo.. Funny that after this last playoff he’s now wants to stay out of the UFA waters. That loser has officially been exposed as NOT CLUTCH.

Boy, that was an epic meltdown. We’ll see, though. Like Turco (heh), he’ll get several more chances to change opinions.

I think this year was his chance to prove it

L:uongo had a massive meltdown down the stretch in 07/08 that led to the Nucks missing the post season.

This was his prove it year. If he had lost that final game 3-2 or even 4-2 I think he had some wiggle room. He just got picked apart in the biggest game of his life.

by Chickendirt on Jul 1, 2009 1:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m just glad it wasn’t another massive cap-circumventing deal that peters down to $1 million in Years 10 and 11 or something. That stuff is not a good trend.

    Those guys were smart though

The Leafs have a habit of signing the dumbest goons on the block.

I predict Coloton Orr costs Toronto at least eight points in the standings this year.

Looks like Roli had a falling out in Edmonton

He wanted two years and they refused.

Snow swooped right in to grab him.

We are in big trouble if DP goes down for an extended period. At the age of 40 I don’t think this guy can handle more than 30 with out geting injured himself.

by Chickendirt on Jul 1, 2009 2:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Of course I’ll be proven wrong by game 20 when he goes down and DP still isn’t right, but I’m not too worried. He finished well last season, and now he gets the bonus of East Conference travel, too.

Wow, I'm surprised at the reaction

I mean, I’d love Anderson or Biron, but I don’t think they were coming. Conklin, though ancient, handled 63 games last year not too shabbily. Given the circumstances, I’m cool with it. Sure as hell beats Raycroft or some other flop.

Only problem is that he's gonna get run A LOT in this conference

That’s what bothers me. Especially with his age being able to withstand the bombardment.

Avery is one in particular that like to lay elbow drops and sh!te.

Lucic can be a bit of a prick like that at times also.

by Chickendirt on Jul 1, 2009 2:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Time for … Chris Neil? I think Roloson is pretty combative. It should be interesting. I do worry about if the Isles come out playing firewagon hockey again and give up 40 shots twice a week.

Koskinen and Lawson in Bridgeport … man the possibilities this season are many.

Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.

by Dominik on Jul 1, 2009 2:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Chris Neil is a bit of an asshole

If that’s the case may as well bring back Simon.

We don’t need to revist that embarassment (Though I do give him a pass on the hollweg thing. Hollweg should have gotten a suspension in that affair as well).

by Chickendirt on Jul 1, 2009 2:56 PM EDT reply actions

    I rescind that comment

We now have no choice but to grab Neil or we are in deep shite this season.

I’m now reallyt concerned for Taveres’, Bailey’s and Okposo’s safety on the ice.

The Rags are gonna have their way this team and it’s gonna be ugly. That have a team full of nothing but asshole cheapshot artists now.

by Dominik on Jul 1, 2009 3:40 PM EDT up reply actions

    I like it.

Guy posted over 60 games 2 of the last 3 years. Had an outstanding goals against and a winning record on a crappy team. Is playoff tested and intense.

Also, 2 year deal gives Isles flexibility after this year (1 year buyout is not big deal if Roloson is done).

There might have been one or two on the list that were a bit more attractive, but there were none in that group that you would build forward from. This is a good signing.

    I like the Roloson signing

The guy has played 40 each year since the 2001-02 season (not counting the lockout year) including 60 in 2 of the past 3 seasons.

I wasn’t looking for the Isles to sign someone to be a 1A/B goalie for years to come, but for someone to serve as a stopgap while Koskinen develops in the AHL (hopefully) and DiPi’s health situation becomes clearer. While there were certainly goalies higher up on my wish list, i’d much rather go with Roloson for 2 years than someone else for a long term, bloated contract blocking Koskinen from the NHL roster (assuming that he’s the real deal).

    Globe & Mail:

According to various sources in Montreal, the Isles’ pitch for Komisarek, who had a terrible, injury-ravaged 2008-09 seaon with only two goals and 11 points, is significantly richer than the four-year deal the Habs offered him last week. That contract is believed to have been in the range of $4-million per year.

$4 million per, I can handle.

    Chicago is screwed.

The one team no one is talkin about today, and I’m shocked by this, is the Sharks. They need to move some guys and add some toughness.

They dd nothing at the draft as well.

I can’t even believe they signed Blake as prematurely as they did.

The Sharks have to be the most mismanaged team in the league. Lucky for them they at lest got a presidents trophy last year or they would be bashed worse than we have over the years.
