Around SBN: Tiger Woods, Tony Romo Grouped Together At Pebble Beach

Awake? I am. Barely. Islanders are up at #31. Who do we want here? Jeremy Morin? Son of Ferraro? Big Budish? A goalie? (too soon.) I honestly don't know, and I'm sure they'll surprise me. [Update: Naturally, they take a goalie]

31: Finland's 6'7" 6'5" g Mikko Koskinen.
62: Sweden's Anders Nilsson, also a goalie. (NYI traded 56 to CBS to get 62 and 92 back.)

I'll be in and out, while compiling info on the new picks today. Weigh in with your pick or reaction here. For a leisurely running chat hit Doug's live blog at IslesOfficialsOutlook.

The bar is open.

Trade

Florida trades JayBo’s rights to Calgary for Leopold and a 3rd. Begin the watch to see how Darryl Sutter plans to fit Jay under the cap.

That’s really not bad at all, considering. Thank you cap; the Panthers got something for a guy who’s a UFA in three days.

Whoops

Mirtle notes Leopold is a pending UFA, too. So it’s a 3rd, which is really all you can expect for a guy who hits the market next week.

Islanders take the Goalie: Mikko Koskinen

TSN: “At 6-7, Koskinen is one of the tallest prospects available in the entry draft. He had a 1.91 GAA and 17-7-9 record for Espoo this past season.”"

It’s the law: Goalies named Mikko are always good.

Amazing how far medicine has come in 20 years

So far that Bob McKenzie can say of Budish: “I don’t see ANY reason to be concerned about his ACL injury.”

I don’t know. Even with great rehab, bodies breakdown. Early knee injuries still concern me a liiiiitle bit.

Another NYI-CBS trade

Islanders swap 56th to Columbus to get the 62nd and 92nd back. Columbus takes K. Lynch.

Twin goalie towers

The Islanders have gone to Scandinavia to scoop up giant goaltenders.

31: Finland’s Mikko Koskinen
62: Sweden’s Anders Nilsson

Don't know much about history.....

Not a clue about scoring in Finland, but I would have liked to see more shutouts. Shows an ability to steal a game. Good save % for Koskinen.

Think Nilsson will stay in the Swede Jrs? If he comes here, he’ll wind up in Odessa or Utah and then just go back to Sweden.

I imagine the plan is to let them develop over there. Particularly since none of the goalies in this draft were raved about as the type that’s going to step in soon.

Snow swapping again

With consecutive picks at 91 and 92, it was a good time to field offers. Snow sends the 91st to Phoenix in exchange for their 3rd-rounder next year — which will definitely be higher than 91.

A so so draft after the first

I don’t know what the knock in Dehaan is. 55 assists as a rookie D in the OHL is no small feat by and stretch.

I don’t think there was a lot of consensus in the draft after the top 10 or picks. The fact that MSP lasted all the way to the tenth tells you a lot of what people thought of this draft. The ISS had him ranked fourth.

Feraro lasted into the 2nd.

Teams were going off the board pretty much the while night.

Looks like Snow went consensus with the #1 and used the rest to stock the system. No surprise there.

by Chickendirt on Jun 27, 2009 12:46 PM EDT reply actions

Guess a lot of us thought Garth didn’t have to trade up to 12 to get him, feeling he would have been there @16. I thought they were trading up to take Kulikov, who was projected by some in the top 10 as well. Saw De Haan as low as 30th.

by FireGarthSnow on Jun 27, 2009 12:49 PM EDT up reply actions

From what I’m hearing it sounds like a few other teams had him on their board (Florida and Buffalo).

This draft after the first four or five was a very off the board draft. Look at MSP falling all the way down to ten? He was in the top three in the ISS scouting earlier this season and finished fourth in the rankings.

There wasn’t a ton of consensus on this draft.

One thing that’s nice, now that we got the goaltending out of way, we can now just focus on making those really sexy picks from here on out. Dehaan seems off the board but keep in mind that much of this draft was off the board and there wasn’t a lot of consensus.

by Chickendirt on Jun 27, 2009 12:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I think the placement showed there wasn’t much consensus. I see where De Haan was rated, but I’m not sure why — so I’m happy they got him if they wanted him there.

Not bad. We’re likely to have another sexy pick next year.

Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.

by Dominik on Jun 27, 2009 1:03 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Dehaan was rated lower mainly because the others are more NHL ready.

Dehaan is still considered a very high probability of making the NHL and his upside maybe higher talent wise than a lot of the D that were still there afterwards. He obviously passed Jankowski’s psych test with flying colors and that’s important.

The state of our injury prone defense dictates that you never know when one of these guys are gonna get a spot. At least we know they can handle the pressure when they do.

No doubt. My prospect blinders are on, but I like the look of the Isles’ future blueline a lot better than the one they had the last two years. Starting to accumulate “new NHL” defensemen.

I really like Hamonic. I think he should be ranked higher than where he is.

He has offensive ability (put up great numbers on a terrible moosejaw team. That should erase a lot doubts) and can play with an edge.

We’re pretty well stacked at center and D.

At center we look like this

Tavares

Bailey

Neilson

Weight

Walter (I think wer are losing him to free agency though)

Trivino

Yep, I think Walter’s gone. Like how we shape up down the middle. Wonder if Tavares will get some time on the wing at all.

Agreed on the off the board. It was all over the place after the first 5. Never though Despres( my personal favorite) would fall into the cursed Penguins lap @30. If only one more pick, lol.

by FireGarthSnow on Jun 27, 2009 1:04 PM EDT reply actions

I still can’t get over the fact that MSP lasted all the way to ten. That totally shocked me. I had him going to toronto at seven when it was their turn to pick.

That may be been the Zach Parise moment of this years draft. That guy has success in Edmonton Burke is never gonna live it down.

by Chickendirt on Jun 27, 2009 1:10 PM EDT up reply actions

I wonder if people were scared off by all that talk of his questionable finishing. If you pick what becomes a Sean Bergenheim at that spot, in this draft, you’re probably kicking yourself later.

(Not that they’re the same, but that talk reminded me of how Bergie hustles, hits and shows hands but gets snake-bitten … so far.)

by Dominik on Jun 27, 2009 1:19 PM EDT up reply actions

I thought Bergies game was finally starting to come together last season before he got hurt.

I’ve seen clips of MSP. He looks like a cross between Filatov and Rober Nillsson. Doesn’t have the lousy attitude problems of Nilsson though.

Really good skater that generates with his speed. I think Edmonton got the gift of the draft in that late spot.

Dehaan time will tell though. Looks like an NHL lock and a blue chip though.

by Chickendirt on Jun 27, 2009 1:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed. It was finally there for Bergie last year. Then just like Nielsen, just when it was going great — bam, a big injury. I hope he picks up right where he left off.

All in all, this is the spot I hoped we’d be in back when we couldn’t buy a win in December.

Funniest sound bite?

Burke to Bryan Murray, regarding Kadri

Burke: “Is that the guy you want?
Murray:(hesitates) ….Well,…yeah.”
Burke" Sorry, we’re taking him"

by FireGarthSnow on Jun 27, 2009 1:08 PM EDT reply actions

You get tell Burke was fuming. Looked to me he picked that kid just to smite Murray. The other clips with Burke talking to other GMs was just priceless. Burke really hurt himself making proclamations that Tavares was going to be a Leaf.

The interview with the Pick he made on VS was freakin priceless. The look Kadri gave him when the Tavares thing was brough up absolutely priceless. Burke clearly made it known to this kid that he wasn’t his first choice by a long shot.

The body language between the two of them was pure comedy.

I still find it funny how folks are saying there is no way Tavares can be a Crosby or Ovechkin

Last season everyone was screaming generational talent. Even this season up until Dec they were saying the same thing.

The moment it started looking like JT was going to an American team they seriously started down grading this guy and poked holes in his game. Funny how that works up Canada. Me thinks a lot of that had do with the fact that many of the homers up there were hoping he would slip.

Even up until the end even respectable writers up there (McKenzie anyone?) proclaimed the Isles should take Duchesne. Funny how on draft night McKenzie proclaims that the Isles should take Tavares.

I’m not a conspiracy theorist but I just think this was one of those things where they were hoping they could set the islanders up and then retract right at the moment the damage was done.

Looking at JT’s entire repertoire he seems like he has no trouble wracking up assists. He had over 70 two years ago and about 52 last season. This kid does have the ability to make those around him better by making plays (I’d like to see these homers up in Canada explain away all those assists JT wracked up).

I’m not declaring that JT is a DEFINITE generational talent. No one is until they actually play the game. But to decalre it out of the question like the homer writers in Canada have done I find a little silly.

by Chickendirt on Jun 27, 2009 1:52 PM EDT reply actions

So the Isles take two goalies for the first picks of the second and third rounds.

I’m trying to decide how much leeway to give to Snow b/c of JT. I’m still pretty happy about it, but how much credit should he really get for doing the overwhelmingly obvious thing just because he works for the Islanders?

by AP77 on Jun 27, 2009 4:28 PM EDT reply actions

One way I look at it: Did the goalies need to be taken so early? Maybe so, maybe not. They were kind of all over the board.

Another way: The draft after Round 1 is about filling out your depth for the next 2-5 year horizon. And the Islanders may have a serious need in goal on that horizon.

Agree that Snow only gets so much credit for doing the obvious thing with JT. It didn’t exactly take guts.

Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.

by Dominik on Jun 27, 2009 6:14 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm kinda glad they selected the two goalies

Had he not taken them early all we would have heard about was that the Isles had a shot to grab them and blew it.

Goaltending is a gaping hole in this organizations depth chart. I’d rather blow a pick on two than overpay for one on the UFA market and be stuck with the contract.

At least now we don’t really have to worry about stock piling picks for future drafts so we can grab a goalie. We can give these two time to see how they fill out. This was the worst part and I’m glad they got it over with.
