It appears neither Yann Danis nor Joey MacDonald, who split most of the 77 games DiPietro missed last season, will return. The plan now is to keep both Peter Mannino and Nathan Lawson, who will get qualifying offers on two-way deals at Bridgeport, and find a free agent goaltender capable of being a 1A .

>>Greg Logan, in this morning's lineup musings.

"Appears" is an ambiguous word, but from the team's only regular beat reporter I'll take that as firm. Sounds like a plan. Sounds like one most fans can get behind.

I was guessing Joey was gone and Danis would be considered on a two-way, but if the Isles can pull in a legit, established 1A (*cough* Anderson), this is definitely the way to go.

Lawson looks good, Mannino scares me.
You realize the Islanders haven’t kept a backup goalie from season to season since the return from the Strike?
05-06 was Snow with Dubie playing a few
06-07 was Dunham with Dubie playing a few
07-08 was Dubie with Macdonald playing a few
08-09 was MacDonald and Danis

I would at least keep Danis around if he’d take a 2 way. Just looking at Lawson I wouldn’t want him to get thrown to the sharks is DiPietro misses a chunk of the season and something happens to whoever the Isles sign.

I suppose a starter’s 15-year deal doesn’t invite long-term backups.

I haven’t looked much into who’s behind Lawson, but I agree it’d be crazy to throw him to the sharks already. I wonder if Danis (or his agent) thinks he earned something more than a two-way. The Isles answer would probably be that there are a lot of goaltending fish in the sea.

Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
