More on butterfly goalie injuries
This is a three-week-old link at SI, but it's a goodie.
From time to time, I've mused about the long-term damage and hip risk inherent in the butterfly goalie style. SI's David Epstein goes into that further, from Roy to Giguere, mentioning the 20 or so NHL goalies who have had hip surgery from the famous Vail doctor who has operated on so many Islanders.
No small issue, this, considering the 15-year deal for you-know-who. The conclusion is that the butterfly is here to stay -- since it works, of course -- but teams need to recognize that their franchise goalies might not be.
