Burke Contacts Isles, Lightning about Top Picks
Sources say Burke has made contact with both clubs, formally acknowledging Toronto's keen interest in acquiring either the first or second pick in an effort to land London Knights forward John Tavares, who is heavily projected to go first overall.
Islesblogger Note: We knew Burke would make a push, but the day after the lottery? Sorry Burkie, your cupboard is too bare for us - Luke Shenn and five first rounders is a starting point.

Hahaha
Dear Mr. Burke: You’ll also have to throw in the Beatle’s “White” album, a glass of hot fat, and the head of Alfredo Gracia out there, while you’re out there.
Crazy.

Wouldn’t you guys be kinda pissed if Garth Snow traded Tavares for Schenn and picks? You could have had Schenn and Tavares if he had just taken Schenn last year. Instead you’ll end up with Bailey, Schenn and picks. I guess it comes down to what those picks turn out to be but from everything you hear it sounds like there is a lot of ground to be made up between Bailey and Tavares.
Yes, I would be pissed. But I don’t see it happening. Burke has little to trade and even less reason to dig up what it would take to trade.
Personally, I’ve no issue with the Schenn/Bailey move last year. Schenn is just brought up because he’s one of the few young assets Burke has.

I don’t see it happening. It is way too early to assess the Bailey trade, it totally depends on how these guys develop. My main problem with the Bailey trade is that the Isles already have a lot of young forward talent but not much (if any, I’m not sure what they have in the AHL) on the blueline. If they take Tavares they’ll have at least two solid forward lines of guys under 25 but no long term studs on D.
Of course it’s way too early to evaluate the Bailey move, but I thought it was a justifiable move based on the conditions at the time, which is all we have to go on. The Islanders were pretty bare of prospects at both forward and blueline, and they saw something solid or bankable in Bailey (call it “future leader,” call it “certain two-way center and elite passer,” or whatever) that they didn’t see in Filatov.
Maybe if the Islanders were in the top 4, it’s a different story: Most teams had the first three D in that draft on a different level than Schenn. Given their situation, I’m fine with them passing on using a #5 overall on a stay-at-home D in exchange for a center who fits the above description and the extra picks they received by moving down twice.
If Schenn ends up displaying the offensive abilities of those other three blueliners, well too bad for the Isles. But if he doesn’t, he represents a hole that is much less difficult to fill.

I can appreciate your take on the Bailey trade. I don’t agree with it but you may be right. Perhaps I am just a little skeptical of the Isles personnel moves when they try to be too smart for the room. I lived on LI from 1990-2006 so I had front row seats for the Milbury days. I’ve just seen too many Isles moves that bucked the trends and went against conventional wisdom. Most of those moves didn’t work too well, so I’m not expecting much better this time. The way I remember that last draft was that there was a general consensus that Stamkos was 1, and then those 4 blueliners were the clear 2-5. If you have a chance at a franchise D (even with limited offensive upside), I say you take it. But you’re right, the Bailey trade was not a flat out bad trade, objectively speaking.
Here is a slightly related funny story. I was at Nassau Coliseum right before XMas when I was visiting my parents. They were playing the Leafs and Bailey was credited with his first ever NHL goal. My brother and I went to get beers and some guy in front of us was buying beers for his whole row because at the start of the game he said that if Bailey scored he’d be so shocked he’d buy a round for everyone. As soon as we got back to our seats the official scoring was changed and Bailey was given an assist not a goal. I wish I could have seen that guy’s reaction.
Oh, damn, that story is priceless!
I know what you mean by the “too smart for the room” aspect. That was highly irritating. Snow has an element of that in him — or at least an aloofness with the gallery — but apparently he is also keenly aware of and ticked off about the mistakes of the past. If given a truth serum, I’d be curious to hear what Snow would say about MIlbury.
Also, for what it’s worth, Wang has apparently let go of a lot of his stubborn outside-the-box approach to hockey management (and “the committee,” etc.), and will supposedly let Snow do his thing. I don’t unconditionally endorse Snow by any means, but he’s earned my patience with his approach to the rebuild since getting the full go-ahead last summer.
