Islanders @ Capitals [game thread]

New York Islanders at Washington Capitals, Apr 1, 2009 7:00 PM EDT

Nyi-land3_medium                Was-cap_medium

So what news today? We know Mark Streit is out, with Joe Callahan called up to bump the blueline depth chart up. If this means more ice time for Brendan Witt, it will be in front of his old fans, who remember him playing at a different level (or in a different league).

The Islanders' record is, um, not good without Streit. Will we see a Doug Weight-Kyle Okposo all-forward pairing at the power play points? More love for Bruno? Tune in for the exciting conclusion of Islanders-Capitals, 08-09 edition. A regulation loss guarantees a top-3 lottery ball. ("Dear diary: Jackpot.")

Color me tickled that, of those who took the poll so far, most visitors took the chance to slam the Rangers. The world is right when Ranger Disdain is something we can all agree on.

This here thingamabob is the game thread, where you can chat up the game, the NHL, or favorite pie recipes. All in comments. I'm swamped but will try to keep notes on the game as we go ...

Nice early shift for Hillen, Okposo

Pretty funny seeing Theodore face plant in his crease while the puck was off to the side. If Tambellini muscles his way to that puck … easy goal.

Maybe it’s the audio, as Howie sounds fuzzy, too. Spring’s onslaught of pollen is certainly slaughtering me these days…

Ovechkin campfire

Alright, our announcers have weighed in, so I’ll take my turn:

The issue for me with choreographed celebrations like that, is they almost break a line between sport, audience and entertainment. Sort of like “the fourth wall” in theatre or television, it puts (me at least) the audience in an uncomfortable position.

We know this is entertainment; we know spending time and money watching this is frivolous; but we don’t need it thrown in our faces. That’s why spontaneous celebration and emotion is appealing, something I can identify with, whereas pre-planned stuff makes me feel like, “wait, why am I spending time and money to watch a millionaire make a joke of it?”

/end meandering thesis

Witt

I know Witt was taught to take the man and not to puck-watch, but in today’s game you’ve got to adjust and keep an eye on the puck more — you can’t do as much body work in front of the net anyway. It was a turnover (ugly, ugly Callahan) and required a sudden change, but Witt was just completely unaware of the rebound that bounced right back out in front.

You know I didn’t the first year, because I was blogging long distance (on MVN) and didn’t know if I’d want to keep it up.

I did this summer, but it was awkward because I was like “I was with MVN, I have a bridge Blogger account, but by October I will be on SBN.” Either got lost in the shuffle, or … no response. But I didn’t worry about it too much, since I knew I couldn’t make most games, lol.

Yeah, I know they’ve taken some bloggers from off-site. SBN has a lot of nice partnerships right now — stuff is showing up on Yahoo Sports and SI.com. So it would make sense. I don’t mind slow n’ steady growth though.

Fun thing about SBN is it allows a lot of “mini-blogs” from users in the FanPosts and FanShots, etc. And it’s easy to chat with other teams’ fanbases.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
