Rangers-Islanders [game thread]
New York Rangers at New York Islanders, Mar 5, 2009 7:00 PM EST
Short Island Smurfs (32-24-8, 7th/E) at Long Island Islanders (20-36-7, 30th)
It's the most, wonderful time, of the year: Thirtieth place ain't grand, but this is the fun time of the season regardless. The Rangers need this game, and I admit I'll cast a wandering eye toward Guerin's debut against the Panthers -- two teams tied up with the Rangers in the tight race for the final playoff seeds.
Any bets on how many minutes Gordon lets Joel "The Wrecker" Rechlicz see in his NHL debut? I'm saying 4:15.

“There is not a harder worker in Bridgeport, according to the coaching staff.”

Tonight's payroll for the Islanders lineup:
$15.991 million (my own calculations), after injuries, trades and suspensions.
Pretty amazing. Take out Streit and you’d be down to a little over $12 million, depending on who’d replace him.

Correction
Whoops: I think I left Hunter out, thinking the walking cast would keep him out. Add him back and tonight’s payroll (without bonuses) is up to $17.991 million.

Mmph, golden chances
Hilbert and Okposo each stopped on solo chances by Lundqvist.

Rechlicz with his first shift
… and nearly crashed head first into the boards. Hustled back to win the puck on the backcheck.

Man, these two teams came to play
Seven minutes in, they’re skating their tails off.
Crowd is well-lubricated, too.

1st goal: Rangers 1-0
Zherdev, on a nice shot inside the near post, after Jackman made a casual no-look backhand pass up the boards in his own zone. Intended for Streit but … not so much.
Lighthouse Hockey: SBN's New York Islanders blog with hip issues.
1st penalty: Tambellini
And Okposo and Comeau kill the first minute off brilliantly. Atta way, kids.

Joensuu’s got hands, yes he do,
Joensuu’s got hands, how ’bout you?

End of 1st: 1-0 Smurfs
One mistake = one goal. Otherwise, great period. Very entertaining game so far. Torts’ style could add some beauty to this rivalry.

THANK GOD!
Dominik! I was wondering where the live blog was! I couldn’t stand being at the game so I’m on my couch.. SAFE. Glad I found you!!!
Heh heh, welcome! Glad you found it. Just me so far…

Watching the Wang interview with Howie
Didn’t get the pregame :(
Like the way Wang is speaking.
Lighthouse Hockey: SBN's New York Islanders blog with hip issues.
LOL!
Wang: “Where’s Kansas City? … Oh, that place. Yeah, I hear it’s a nice city.”
Lighthouse Hockey: SBN's New York Islanders blog with hip issues.
Or at the game, maybe!
Sometimes these draw, sometimes not. Home games are lighter. Still building up a community :)

PB’s traffic is insane. But I find the live threads to hard to follow … having to refresh all the time and not being able to reply to specific comments.
Lighthouse Hockey: SBN's New York Islanders blog with hip issues.
The fact that our own website doesn’t say anythign about live blogs doesn’t help either!
Damn them!!!
Yeah, I haven’t checked the other guys’ blogs yet to see if anyone is “up” for this one. I put a thread up here every game, though.
Lighthouse Hockey: SBN's New York Islanders blog with hip issues.
Yeah, that’s what I’d bet on. A lot left to be done, but odds are that’s how it happens, in my book. The alternatives don’t make enough sense.
Lighthouse Hockey: SBN's New York Islanders blog with hip issues.
I’m not sure what they may want to scale back. But truthfully, any betting person puts too much in the proposal knowing some will be nixed!
Exactly. Aim high so you’re happy with the compromise.
Lighthouse Hockey: SBN's New York Islanders blog with hip issues.
Yes. Don’t know what will be scaled back though. Maybe residence. Maybe retail.
He already relented on the tower… even though it was “Iconic”… according to Michael Picker.
I was thinking of that. Were you in favor of the tower? Do you have preferences on what goes in or out?
Lighthouse Hockey: SBN's New York Islanders blog with hip issues.
Steady Radek
Intercepting the pass in the slot and starting the breakout in one swoop. Great to see him back healthy.
Lighthouse Hockey: SBN's New York Islanders blog with hip issues.
Okay here’s the real story about me. I was interviewed by the team back in 04. One EX VP adored me. One hated my guts. Why??? Well because when he talked about the lighthouse, I mentioned “I’m sorry, But 60 stories will never make it in Nassau County. " I was given a pointed "It’s ICONIC!” as an answer. My reply was “It may be iconic but it’s not going to work.”
Needless to say… I didn’t get the job. And I thank Mike Milbury for setting up the interview.
Wow, wow. I knew you had a story with them, but that is rich.
Lighthouse Hockey: SBN's New York Islanders blog with hip issues.
Some people don’t want honesty, apparently. That’s crazy.
Lighthouse Hockey: SBN's New York Islanders blog with hip issues.
GOAL!!!!
Big move and rush by Comeau…
Lighthouse Hockey: SBN's New York Islanders blog with hip issues.
Love #57 and #58 each taking the puck hard to the net.
And Rechlicz with his first NHL point!
Lighthouse Hockey: SBN's New York Islanders blog with hip issues.
wouldn’t it be just awesome if they could win this?? Our little rag-tag team of kids against the broadway blues??
But I dream…
It would be beautiful. The Rangers need this win pretty badly. Lot of teams right around them in the playoff race.
Lighthouse Hockey: SBN's New York Islanders blog with hip issues.
I’m trying to recruit my blogger buddies to come over and chat.
SOB!!! this is going to be one of those close ass games.
Cool. People can sign in with their Yahoo! ID if they don’t have an SBN user name here. Just a way of deterring anonymous trolls.
Lighthouse Hockey: SBN's New York Islanders blog with hip issues.
Grrrr. Drury.
Every time I rip a Ranger in the pregame, he scores.
Lighthouse Hockey: SBN's New York Islanders blog with hip issues.
Finally, Islanders PP
Do your magic, Streit.

Ack, young Bailey ends that one. Tsk tsk.

haha, I thought you’d like that one :)
Yeah, the software and support is definitely what drew me over here. I just thought, “this is cool, they need an Islanders site with this stuff.”
Lighthouse Hockey: SBN's New York Islanders blog with hip issues.
I hope he gets to that next level. I really think he can.
Lighthouse Hockey: SBN's New York Islanders blog with hip issues.
It’s a tough one. He’s getting better. He’s much better with Scott. Scott is teachin him.
But he doesn’t have the same scoring touch that JAson has. But he’s a bigger kid, a better fighter, with more tenacity. Just not as good a shot. I just hope his eyes are freakin’ better.
Yeah. Not as good a shot. But I think the rest of his game keeps going even when he’s not scoring (as opposed to when Blake is slumping, and the rest of his game falters).
Lighthouse Hockey: SBN's New York Islanders blog with hip issues.
Wow, nice shift
Lotta pressure from Tambellini and Hunter there. Come on, keep it up.
Lighthouse Hockey: SBN's New York Islanders blog with hip issues.
I agree.
Sean brings a lot to the table. He does. I’ve loved that kid since he was 18. And I was very happy today when NHL.com picked up my story on him for the Islanders fan newsletter.
Oooh, I didn’t see that.
/runs to find it.
Lighthouse Hockey: SBN's New York Islanders blog with hip issues.
Hellooooo!
Of course, I finally get around to stopping by when I probably won’t have much time to hang out, but we’ll see.

Hey, Ken! Any visit is a good visit. Here, pour yourself a beverage.
Lighthouse Hockey: SBN's New York Islanders blog with hip issues.
Whatdya’ think of the game so far?
I’m likin’ the action and pressure … and prayin’ for a comeback.
Lighthouse Hockey: SBN's New York Islanders blog with hip issues.
Fun stuff. I hate missing those two early chances in the first, though. Puts me in a bad frame of mind for the rest of the game. Like, if only…but you’re right about the action. There’s a lot of giddyup out there tonight.

Yeah, those gave me the “okay, Lundqvist is on” feeling.
Lighthouse Hockey: SBN's New York Islanders blog with hip issues.
Normally I only let people who have known me since the 70s call me Kenny. But for you, I make an exception ;-)

He did. Man, and he has that shot if he can just get it off during games. Monday’s was nice.
Lighthouse Hockey: SBN's New York Islanders blog with hip issues.
Danno said, that Tamby has one hell of a wrist shot if he can use it.
He’s got to put a little more weight on.
and that new kid… I’ll never be able to pronouce his name!!!
You just have to pretend his name is Wrecklitch. Or are you talking about Jesse?

Been meaning to do that. Who designed your logo, by the way?

The SBN overlords. They’re actually really great with support. When I was working with them about starting up here, they just asked what name I wanted, and I gave them a general idea for a logo.
Lighthouse Hockey: SBN's New York Islanders blog with hip issues.
For the avatar I just cropped a bit from the logo.
Lighthouse Hockey: SBN's New York Islanders blog with hip issues.
Yeah, it’s great. I really like it.

Thanks! I was really pleased with what they did. They asked for revisions, and I just said, “um…no, I think you guys got it!”

Wow, Wang
Watching his direct appeal to the camera, call to action. He gave a good performance.

you can thank Katrina for the good performance

You can always change it again. I think when you change your avatar, all your comments change — but when you change your signature, the old one sticks to your older comments.

Well done! Like magic, haha! Yes, very happy.

LOL… I only did it because I’m already drinking quite a bit… otherwise it would have been far more tame.

Hey! I’m sure the early third-period lead doesn’t help the atmosphere.
Lighthouse Hockey: SBN's New York Islanders blog with hip issues.
Avery doesn't like to be hit
Yeah, he played dead. And Hunter let up.
Lighthouse Hockey: SBN's New York Islanders blog with hip issues.
I just hope that Rechlicz puts Avery through the glass. Everything is fine in the stands so far. No fights….yet.
I’d be in favor of that. Rechlicz might be looking to pad his point total, first.
Lighthouse Hockey: SBN's New York Islanders blog with hip issues.
I’d just like a win. Not a pretty win… just a win.
