Wild-Islanders [live game thread]

Minnesota Wild at New York Islanders, Mar 25, 2009 7:00 PM EDT

Chris Botta believes Yann Danis gets the start tonight, which could be bad news for the Wild's playoff hopes. If Danis has one of his games, he could provide the room the Isles need to take some chances and pinch a few off Backstrom.

Oh, hell -- it's a power play-dependent league no matter which way you slice it.

Islanders Gameday: Where the Wild things aren't

Wild bloggin': Hockey Wilderness

Complete Coverage >

This is the country where one goes a'game threadin'. It's also the time of year when -- if out of the playoffs -- I go a'game hoppin' around Center Ice. Tonight: Florida needs a win in Buffalo, Carolina can really help itself with a win over Ottawa, and Anaheim needs a win in Colorado. Damn, I can't over-emphasize how much I love this time of year, whether my favorite team(s) are involved or not. (This is the only version of March Madness I've ever known or cared for.)

But I promise to keep the fire going here. The Wild's season is on the line, too.

Bailey

That’s cool: Hadn’t realized he was the third-youngest Islander to have a multi-goal game, behind Trottier and LaFontaine. Heh, not bad company.

Said the coaches (and Okposo) have been working after practice to feed him pucks and get him to shoot more (and better).

Sutton officially done for the year

Was kind of hoping he’d come back for further eval. Statistically, he actually held up quite well in his few games this season … but such a limited sample.

I was hoping to see him to get a better idea of just how much of the blueline to blow up over the summer.

Fight: Scott v. Rechlicz

Wow, Scott is huge. And he is landing punches with his 10-foot reach. Rechlicz has resorted to trying jabs with his near, left hand.

Rechlicz must be thinking, “I have to fight Fritz again?”

Bruno! 1-0

Gervais is gonna be demanding a raise if he keeps this scoring thing up.

Bruno is getting his power from his hair. The longer it gets, the better he plays. You heard it here first.

The trap

Yeah, Jaffe has already got his telestrator out to show them sitting three forwards in the neutral zone.

… but the conclusion was Witt making a poor (intercepted) pass to try to get around it.

End of 1st: 2-1 Wild

Ooh, and some funny business going on! Comeau in the rarest of positions, throwing shoves from outside the gate in the corner.

Okposo jawing with Clutterbuck! Has Okposo fought yet? Could tonight be his first??

Ouch

So Comeau hit Schultz with possibly a high arm. A Wild dude takes exception and hits him right as the off-ice official was opening the gate, Comeau flies through the gate, and K.O. gets pissed at the offender (#20, I think).

Meanwhile, in Buffalo

The Sabres are tied 1-1 with Florida, and the excellent grump Sabres studio analyst is diagramming a play in which JayBo assesses play in his zone, makes the decision to head up ice and just misses a perfectly placed back-door empty net at the other end of the rink.

End of 2nd: 3-1 Wild

Four shots on goal by the Wild in that period.

Owen Nolan’s beard is very grey. I remember when he was just a pup, his “Irish eyes smiling” on the cover of The Hockey News after the Nords drafted him. The fact those three #1s Nolan, Lindros and Sundin didn’t survive to win the Cup with that franchise bears remembering.

Didn’t your team get the memo that from here on out they’re supposed to embarass Western Conference teams fighting for playoff spots? I fully expect a third-period flurry and a regulation win for the Isles tonight.

4-1 Wild?!

I was late getting back for the intermission, but I heard the Howie/Jaffe tones that sounded like “another goal.”

I gotta say, I’ve watched a lot of losses this year, but I did not expect them to go down like this. Thought the young’ns might have trouble with the conservative team, but four goals to the Wild with Danis in net. Eesh.
