Avalanche-Islanders on Versus [game thread]

Colorado Avalanche at New York Islanders, Mar 2, 2009 7:00 PM EST

Here lies Versus' most regretted programming choice of the season: 15th v. 15th. (Or 26th v. 30th, if you're not into the whole "conference brevity" thing.

Que-rightc_medium             Puck-square_medium

Colorado Avalanche (28-34-1, 26th) at New York Islanders (19-36-7, 30th)

7 p.m. | Nassau [gloriously unsponsored] Veterans Memorial Coliseum | Versus(!)

Avs blog central: Mile High Hockey (SBN)

Whether you go a-threading or not, you should read this fan's experience at Friday's Blackhawks-Penguins game. I have to agree with the heading: It is why we're here. Nice to see a market like Chicago wake up to hockey again.

The flu strikes. So I'm brewin' hot toddys, tryin' to stay upright. But feel free to talk and taunt -- and suggest rehydrating remedies -- within this ball of game thread.

hey Dom, I got a question. I know they had it in one of the NHL video games, but did the Islanders ever use the wave trim with the traditional logo on a jersey during a season?

I grimaced at the Gortons fisherman logo too, but I did dig the wave trim, and thought to myself at the time: “if they just put the old logo on the new jersy, it would kick ass!”

by Dooks on Mar 2, 2009 7:38 PM EST reply actions

Yep. After the owners who screwed them with the Fishsticks were beaten over the head with their mistake, they filed the app to change. But it was past the league’s soak-the-fans-with-merchandise deadline, so they could only add the original log as a third jersey.

Lighthouse Hockey: SBN's New York Islanders blog with hip issues.

by Dominik on Mar 2, 2009 7:40 PM EST up reply actions

I actually don’t have a fishstick jersey (never, never), but I have one with the wave trim and the circle logo.

For the ‘90s, not bad. If they were starting from scratch on Long Island with the mariner theme, I’d say great! But for a team that had the last dynasty with the original theme, it was inexcusable.

The other were a 1st-rounder (which hurt) and a busted prospect who never made it. Essentially, Snow knew he wasn’t high on the guys he sent back, and I suspect he wanted to make a splash to show he could trade with the big dogs in the Old Boys GM club.

Do you have a read on the whole anonymous vets vs. Gordon thing?

Lighthouse Hockey: SBN's New York Islanders blog with hip issues.

by Dominik on Mar 2, 2009 8:30 PM EST reply actions

in a way…. I think they are bothered that Gordon is more of a teacher and has indeed brought the youngsters into closed door sessions to show them how he wants them to play.

I don’t believe he does anything intentionally to cause a division between the vets and kids. He has done nothing but speak highly of how good they are in the room with the kids. But Scott is the coach and he wants them to learn HIS system. And that is what he is TEACHING them.

You will never find a harder working or more technically skilled coach than Scott Gordon.

by 7th Woman on Mar 2, 2009 8:32 PM EST up reply actions

Thanks. That was my impression. He was brought in for a purpose, and he’s doing it, in my book. A little frustration is inevitable.

If you’ve ever heard this man in person explaining what he wants a play to look like, as someone who doesn’t PLAY hockey — you’d fall asleep. He has every painful detail etched into his brain and will show you five different videos of exactly what he’s talking about. It’s scary.

by 7th Woman on Mar 2, 2009 8:37 PM EST up reply actions

Excellent. Like to hear it. In a parity league, we need differentiators like that. If his style doesn’t work out, it was well worth the attempt.

From what I got from Greg today – I asked if Gordon would adapt because of all the teaching “youth” he has done. He responded with “Maybe he isn’t capable of change and this is his way of ridding the team of people that shouldnt be around”.

I spoke to Logie for like 10 minutes in the locker room…..

Awesome. For a media-shy guy, Gordon doesn’t seem to worry about stepping on toes to do his thing. I like that he’s confident in what he’s here to do. “Isn’t capable of change” is frightening, but he’s already adapted a little.

Love to hear more on your thoughts with Logan…

Exactly

IMO, Budaj has played a lot of good games this year while Raycroft has been consistently scary even in wins. Unfortunately, Budaj’s confidence is now shot, Raycroft sucks, and the rest of the team seems to be giving up. It’s a sad season indeed. We’ll try and fight ya for Tavares ;)

You know, I had the best of intentions to actually avoid the blogs tonight because I hate pre-trade days talk (rumor, repeat, change team, repeat, blah-blah-blah) and with so little on-ice activity I thought I was made in the shade. Nevertheless I started watching the game and listening to Coach Murray’s radio show at six…and only after that ended did I think to come over to your site for the first time.

Imagine my (complete lack of) surprise to see some Game Timers over here already as well as our other cross-site friends from Chicago and Phoenix. This would have been a perfect opportunity to host a community-wide blog party with your team playing the only game on a national(ish) broadcast.

I’m sure you’ve got a lot of material to put together so I’ll see myself out and see you over at our house for the Wings game tomorrow. Go Islanders (draft position)!

I reckon i'll take my leave as well.

I’m glad I finally had a chance to take part in an Isles GDT. I’ll be sure to make it back again. It’ll be tough, though, with the schedule the Blues have.

Enjoy the win. Even if it doesn’t help the Isles’ draft position, it was of assistance to our cause in StL.

I know — the schedule overlaps maddeningly.

Yeah … we can afford the win, though. Still a lot of space between here and Atlanta.

No no, perfect timing.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
