Islanders-Canadiens [live game thread]

New York Islanders at Montreal Canadiens, Mar 12, 2009 7:30 PM EDT

I'm actually intrigued by this game. The Habs are in an interesting spot -- and while I think they'll do fine as far as making a middle-seed playoff spot under Gainey, it's certainly a tenuous time for them. Meanwhile, the Islanders' recent form is not that of a pushover. If former Hab property Yann Danis plays lights-out and/or Carey Price or the team in front of him lays an egg, the narrative in Montreal will write itself.

McLean is out

Per Botta: McLean hurt himself during one of those pre-game soccer warmups. Grief.

Kovalev also

Confirmed that the “flu” will keep him out. Come on Kovi, they fired Carbonneau – what more do you want?

Habs ABC's

The Canadiens must have the hardest-to-spell names in the league. Bunch of spelling bee-worthy ones. On top of that, with all their retired numbers, hardly any Hab has a memorable number — except Koivu, whose number you’d remember anyway.

I think I’ll be doing a lot of “that guy” and “the other guy” in tonight’s thread.

Habs: 1-0

Well, that didn’t take long. Two early power plays (Witt went off for body-slamming this time), and a goal. That’s what I get for ripping the Canadiens’ powerplay.

Deflected off Martinek’s stick and by Danis.

… and before this icing at 5:43, I don’t think I’d seen the puck near Price yet tonight.

Isles PP

… and Streit breaks his stick on a one-timer. Yeah, I definitely cursed Streit and the Isles PK with my glib preview remarks about the Habs PP.

Another first NHL goal. Nice. Comeau set him up wiiiiide open on a heads-up play from the side of the net.

Next season

This is sort of how I expect Islanders games may go next season. If we get good goaltending again, I imagine it will help the Isles withstand early pressure, and then the Go-Go Youths will keep the pressure going throughout the game.

… Says the guy 16 minutes into the game with it tied 1-1.

Okposo keeps 'em all away

Fun to hear the Habs fans get frustrated as Okposo basically carries the puck around the zone all by himself. The kid is giving opposing fans something to remember him by.

Wow

One of the Kostitsyn weasels just pole-axed Witt’s stick and half, and goes to the box.

Oh!

Streit set up Nielsen at the doorstep right before time expires, but Nielsen couldn’t get all of it.

Meanwhile, Witt is frustrating Price by standing right in front of him on the PP.

Okposo stopped. What he needs to do though is keep his feet moving there to not telegraph pass v. shot.

Whoa, Rechlicz challenged

Rechlicz looks all too ready for something from Kostopoulos (I’ve given up spelling Habs names tonight), who seemed to initiate it. Just coincidental roughings.

They’re out of the box and going at it for real. Kostoupolos landed some early ones, but Rechlicz recovered and got some lefts back in.

… almost looked like Rechlicz was making sure he knew: “Hey, I’m a lefty, so be ready.”

Circus saves from Danis

He kind of created it by coming out and botching his own clear, but then he slid back and forth, remaining calm — despite me losing my dinner here at home — and keeping the puck out.

Moral dilemma time

Two minutes left. Tie game. Isles have played great. But OT does nothing for our, uh, our “lottery interests.” If the ref wanted to screw us over, now would be a good time. Especially if we could cash that karma chip in for a game that matters, in another season (that matters).

That is the type of player I had hoped he would become though, so it’s great to see him grow before our eyes.

A week ago I was wondering if he would reach 20, now I am starting to think 30 may be possible.
