With the play of the Kid Line [name pending], I'm amped for this game in a way I haven't been in quite a while. Weird feeling. But I totally have a handle on the addiction and can quit whenever I want.

And we're live

MSG+ boosting the youngsters. I think that image of Okposo scoring on the one-timer from his knee will stay with us for a while.

Pre-game promos

They’re praising Nielsen and Park’s hockey sense, which has become a given at this point.

Also: Karri Ramo has “his brains” painted on his mask. Maybe I’m just Malarchuk-scarred, but that’s a bit creepy. And can only invite ridicule until he does something in this league.

Goring rocking it from the stands again

Howie says the TB vets support Tocchet

Of course they do! They got old-school, no-plan Melrose run out something quick, and Tocchet is essentially an old buddy and teammate (of Recchi’s).

Bad penalty, Comeau

Feel shame.

Jaffe’s awesome: “If you’re going to take a penalty like this, go at him hard. Make it worth it.” Yes, yes!

Oh, oh, oh: Jackman v. Lecavalier

Lecavalier jumps in to the “defense” of Ramo, decides to fight Jackman. I think if Jackman saw it coming, he pummels Vinny. But Vinny got the first shot in, and it was even after that.

For the record, Jaffe says Ramo initiated that collision. He sure didn’t position right to avoid it.

Ow ow ow

Guerin hit in the back of the knee by the shot from the point, goes straight to the locker room. Joy.

End of 1st: 0-0

Isles kind of escape that one. Lightning had more chances.

MSG+ crew says Guerin still in the locker room: The kind of turns of fate that make trade deadline decisions easy?

Shots: 11-7 for TB

Unless nhl.com is slow on the updates, Comrie had only 1:28 of TOI — just one second more than Guerin, who left hurt.

I believe I would’ve had to flunk several years to pull the chronology off.

They made a minor deal about him being in Blues camp a few years ago. Honestly, with goalies, there are so few jobs and the development time is so long, it’s fun to see guys stick with it.

Streit still out, Jaffe concerned

I was thinking earlier: as much as I like Guerin, we can “afford” an injury to him (any deadline deals notwithstanding), but an losing Streit would obviously have a massive impact on each game. That would bring the tanks back out.

2nd intermission: 3-0

Hunter interview: Sometimes the tip works, sometimes you whiff. … On holding the lead: “just don’t change anything.” Please boys, please stick to this.

Goring and CJ: Goring says he was hazing Witt about not having a goal yet this season. With Martinek off the mark, the hazing shall intensify.

Goring on Okposo: “Growing and growing in leaps and bounds.” Indeed. The kid is waking up to how good he can be, it seems. Like he gets away with more each game.

Crap. Streit done for the game.

Well, the injury hex continues. The cover of injury excuse grows. This team has finally started to look somewhat healthy, and I think that’s been part of the better play of late.

Lacroix says the injury hold out is “precautionary.”

5-on-3 against the Isles. Made worse by the fishy nature of the first penalty, to Hunter.

Young guns

I like that Bailey, Okposo, Comeau and Nielsen are four fairly-to-very promising forwards, and two of them weren’t on my radar this time last season.

Imagine if Tambellini worked out … but that’s why you got a throw ’em against the wall and see who works out.

Final: 3-1. Pinch me, the tanks are driving away

Well, that was another solid performance. It all turned in those few minutes where they grabbed the three goals in the second, but they didn’t collapse on the lead. Didn’t come out great in the third, but they straightened out.

I don’t … I don’t know how to react to a four-game win streak. Pinch me.

St. Louis and Tocchet

They’re letting Devorski have it, really laying into him.

St. Louis has a point — he was taken down by Martinek right before that. But buddy, you’re down 3-1 in the offensive zone; no time to waste yourself on retaliation penalties.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
