Islanders-Thrashers [game thread]

New York Islanders at Winnipeg Jets, Dec 3, 2009 7:00 PM EST

Next Game

Oldny_medium                 Atl-top_medium
New York Islanders (10-10-7, t-9th/E) at Atlanta Thrashers (14-7-3, 5th/E)
7 p.m. EST  |  [some Spanish king's name] Arena  |  MSG+, radio

Complete Coverage >

Frans Nielsen thinks he can play tonight. Katie Strang said it would be a game time decision between him and Rob Schremp Hockey. I say let them battle it out in a pre-game shootout: The Frans Deke vs. the Schremp Dangle. Whose your money on?

For fun: An AHL practice update on Rick DiPietro ... and in Philly, they are their own worst enemies filled with self-doubt, so root for them to fall tonight to the Canucks, who are playing back-to-back road games after thumping New Jersey last night.

This is the every-game game thread here at Lighthouse Hockey. It's sort of a chat and sort of a journal of instant reactions. You can use it to chat up the game, leave poignant hockey observations, or trade opinions on the influence of Warrior Soul and your favorite egg nog recipes. (Can't go wrong with cognac.) I'll probably be in and out during this one. So "dodge the bullet, or carry the gun -- the choice is yours."

That

is one empty arena. Too bad. These two teams usually play some entertaining games.

Tambellini

Nice play by Tambellini keeping the puck alive on a delayed penalty, winning it behind the net, kicking it to himself, and setting up Tim Jackman in the slot. (Too bad it was just Jackman.) That’s a little play that’s too often given up on just to get to the PP.

Ironically, it was a better chance than any they had on the actual powerplay that followed.

You Know

I never got Atlanta as any sort of sports town. Historically Atlanta is the last NHL Franchise to move from the US to Canada. Not only that, but they had one of the greatest teams for a Decade in baseball of all time and towards the end they had trouble selling out for even playoff games let alone regular season.

From what I know of Basketball no one really shows up for that either, and football will sell out just about anywhere cause its only one game a week.

BTW: I hate the NFL Network. Theres no reason to have Thursday night games, except to try to force more people to get the Network. I’ll be watching the Jets and flipping back and forth.

"So basically, the Stats make no sense whatsoever."

by Mark D on Dec 3, 2009 7:46 PM EST reply actions

I don’t know if it’s a transplant issue or what with Atlanta. Of course, the Thrashers have yet to give them a reason to start.

Ah, I forgot that Thursday football is on the NHL Network. That damned league, I swear. They know how to wield their monopoly.

I’ll be bouncing around cleaning for a party tomorrow, so I’ll be pretty quiet here tonight myself.

Not sure how much you follow Football, but the UFL supposedly lost 30 million running their season, and they claim they were prepared to lose that much.

They should have just run a spring league. If they come back they are supposedly moving the NY Team and one of the other teams that couldn’t crack even 10K in attendance.

An Official Request

For all thats good and Holy, if you go to an Islanders game/event and can take a picture of Tavares please do. Someone with a sense of humor made the main pic of Tavares at Wikipedia a pic from the pregame warmups from the night they wore those Halloween outfits. Please let us remove this trajedy from the web.

Done

I’ve replaced it with a picture I took during warmups at the game against Pittsburgh last week. It’s not a particularly great picture (it’s from his back), but at a more normal jersey (although not the ideal third jersey).

As a kid (and to this day) I HATE leaving games early. I’d rather hang out as the place empties out then leave early. So one time we were watching an Isles preseason game against the Devils and the Devs were up 5-1. The Islanders scored with 16 seconds left to make it 5-2 and I argued with my dad that the Isles could score a goal every 5 seconds to save the game.

"So basically, the Stats make no sense whatsoever."

by Mark D on Dec 3, 2009 9:28 PM EST up reply actions

That sounds a lot like me. My dad would never ever leave early, but he’d tell me it’s over, and I’d spend the remainder hoping they somehow prove him wrong.

Tomorrow’s game re-cap will be me bitching about the two guys behind me yelling at Kovy to “WAKE UP!” and for Kozlov to “LOOK SHARP” or whatever.

Because Slava Kozlov, a 100 year veteran of the NHL, will automatically step his game up when he hears your beer guzzling self screaming at him to look alive. Gotcha.

Moulson Free Agency Status? Anyone know?

What is Moulson’s free agency status at the end of this year? Will he become a restricted or unrestricted free agent? I want to buy a Moulson jersey, but I want to know if he’ll be on the team next year.

I regret missing this one but that was my last Thursday night job until March! I’ll have to watch the replay of that one. The highlights looked great!

Oh man, I bet you’ll be right. Right now Luongo and Guerin are actually getting top billing — never mind that a good chunk of their ads revolve around your 1-in-18 chances of seeing a hat trick. (I notice they don’t advertise the chances of us seeing a shutout.)

Yeah, they have a nice rivalry going — I just think the conspiratorial tones go over the top. From the outside, both are great, totally different players, promoted in different ways.
