Martin Biron is in. Bruno Gervais just might be is back. Lots and lots of snow already hitting. (What the hey, it's only a blizzard, right? By the way, where I am: zilch. Just grey skies and dry ground.)

If you're in the Eastern blizzard zone or heading to the game, be careful out there. But now you have to represent, given that the Habs fan invasion is in full effect. I like to think of it as Habs fans paying Alexei Yashin's buyout: It's lose-win for everybody.

Yikes

Hope the concession stands are stocked with poutine.

Saw Erick dug up the boxscore to that last blizzard game.

Marc-Andre Bergeron

Reported on HNIC as on the fourth line. With their two goons. I guess he won’t see much beyond the powerplay.

Minnesota equipment story

So we learn:

  • Tavares has six pairs of skates, and the same shoulder pads he’s had since he was 14.
  • Biron has the same skates he’s had for 12 years.

Damn. Through Biron’s legs, and Markov pokes it home.

Is it just me or does your confidence level drop drastically when Biron’s in net

by lfisher3 on Dec 19, 2009 7:36 PM EST reply actions

I sure don’t have the same hope the Isles can steal a game as I do when Roloson is in. But Biron’s history is a little streaky — I’m hoping we get one of his hot streaks while he’s in an Isles uni.

They still have to get some better shots on Halak. Everything’s hitting his core.

Really?

They’re outshooting them, just not shooting well. I’m not seeing at all where this period is on Gordon. The Habs’ best chances were on the PP or on turnovers that happened in the defensive zone.

Lighthouse Hockey: Eyes on Tavares, mug full of Moulson.

by Dominik on Dec 19, 2009 8:11 PM EST up reply actions

I'm looking over the past few games

We’re getting shots but many of them are predictable and poorly located. Positionally, in front of the net, even if they compete a slot pass, the goalies really aren’t over shifting laterally. As a matter of fact, if you watch Halak, they are coming our and challenging.

The shots, as noted are going into the bread basket.

Gordon needs to work on the guy in the slot breaking towards the far side of the net a little more to drop the goalie and get more lateral movement.

by Chickendirt on Dec 19, 2009 8:16 PM EST up reply actions

I agree with all that — I just don’t see it as teams figuring Gordon out. I mean everyone’s system is fairly similar, and everyone’s is out there for all to see. Teams adjust to their own flaws and the other teams’ strengths/tendencies each game.

Last Snow game v. Chicago

Hurts a bit to see how the Hawks are great now and the Isles not. But then the Hawks were something awful for 10 years straight, while the Isles were bubble hunting in the years between then and now.

Lighthouse Hockey: Eyes on Tavares, mug full of Moulson.

by Dominik on Dec 19, 2009 8:03 PM EST reply actions

Unless something miraculoius happens with McDonald and Hillen we may be as bad for just as long

we haven’t even really gotten to the tryout period on the NHL level with Hamonic and deHaan.

I even think it’s gonna take maybe two more years with Bailey before he gets his game down.

We may be competitive in most of our games during that time. The more I look over Bridgeport, who’s here and our prospect pool, the more I’m beginning to think this is gonna be a really long haul. Our situation in goal (the most important position I don’t care if you are building or competing) is far from setteled.

by Chickendirt on Dec 19, 2009 8:10 PM EST up reply actions

Long haul

Yeah, I would think so. Nobody’s rebuilt overnight. Even Pittsburgh with those two gift-wrapped prizes of Malkin and Crosby falling in their lap, took half a decade.

I expect slow, steady progress though, all location/budget/ownership questions aside.

Lighthouse Hockey: Eyes on Tavares, mug full of Moulson.

by Dominik on Dec 19, 2009 8:16 PM EST up reply actions

You have to look at the half full side

we have had pleasant surprises in Moulson and in MacDonald and Hillen. Opposing announcers rave about Hillen. Going to the playoffs was always a long shot, but we have one great top line and have made a couple of solid additions to the blueline. Joensuu and Comeau also look like they are coming around. This year was always about seeing what we have and what we need. The good news is that we don’t need everything. We are 1-2 players away on offense and, after our blue chip blueliners are brought up, 1-2 away on defense as well. Garth will know what he needs to do in the draft and through trade this summer.

Serious Question

Why does Gordon keep breaking up the Tavares, Moulson, Okposo Line? They were playing great early in the year and if he keeps that line together it could become one of the better lines in the league in the future

by lfisher3 on Dec 19, 2009 8:14 PM EST reply actions

I can only guess it has to do with the desire to get scoring beyond one line. Since no one else is scoring consistently, I assume the hope is to get Okposo to spark a second line, or at minimum make a second line dangerous.

The perils of lacking depth.

Lighthouse Hockey: Eyes on Tavares, mug full of Moulson.

by Dominik on Dec 19, 2009 8:20 PM EST up reply actions

true, but let’s be honest Okposo hasn’t really had a scorer’s touch the past few weeks. Putting him on that first line could jump start his scoring

by lfisher3 on Dec 19, 2009 8:22 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed. I’d be fine with them keeping that line together all year long, unless things got really lopsided. With no real aspirations this season, that’d make it far more entertaining at least.

But I can see why a coach would try something else. He looks at his (thin) roster and thinks “KO ought to be able to create something there.” Meanwhile, JT and Moulson can create things on their own — and actually Comeau’s looked okay there lately, at least using his passing skills and being assertive on the forecheck.

Probably every coach fears becoming an easy-to-beat, one-line team. But I don’t know when enough’s enough and you decide you’re not even a one-line team without that combo together.

Lighthouse Hockey: Eyes on Tavares, mug full of Moulson.

by Dominik on Dec 19, 2009 8:27 PM EST up reply actions

I agree with you… I think it is to the point where Kyle should not be used to spark anyone else, he needs to be sparked himself. Man do I hope Weight comes back soon.

and the economic situation isn't good either BUT

attendance has been bad all year, not just tonight. Don’t think it was even this bad last year. if Wang either resolved his differences with the ToH or made some noise moving ahead with a deal with Queens, it might help. Islanders going on a winning streak would as well.

by BCISLEMAN on Dec 20, 2009 12:42 AM EST up reply actions

Are time will come

Thing most people even hockey people dont realize

- everyone still thinks Milbury is making decisions for the Islanders

keep bringing up the Depietro contract to me it seems Wang was ahead of his time this seems to be the norm now and every pro hockey players dream

- when has Wang ever been cheap, he tried Milbury’s way and got burnt, if it wasnt dor DP getting hurt he unleashed getting Smyth and Zhitnik for play-off run and offered Smyth good money. The following yr he grabbed any FA available and paid them. -

- the way I look at it is both Wang and Snow thought lets step back look at what we have to work with what we can obtain with stockpile in 08 draft picks and getting a franchise player in 09 I think we know have the talenbt its just developing it

-Getting a new facility wouldnt hur both in A)attracting FA and B) atractting fans this is all in the works only us few who can read really know whats going on with the direction the team is heading in, let alone we are also in an oppturnistic finacial situation when considering the salary cap (17mill to spend) where other teams are in for a real shock especially if cap goes down

Being patient is easier than done within a few yrs we will have developed are prospects grabbed a few FA’s and built a new building weather its in Long Island maybe another question thos three things will b gurenteed
