Anton Klementyev has now been granted permission to participate in any World Juniors camp/tournament for Russia ... GM Garth Snow received some cooperation from the Russian Hockey Federation and it is believed that Kirill Petrov can get out of his KHL contract with Kazan if he wishes.

Wow
Way to go, backup goalie!
NittanyWhiteOut.com. Arguably the second best Penn State blog I know of.
Garth must’ve made the Russians an offer they can’t refuse…

Still no one has stated what Kirill or Anton think of this whole situation. Can’t Newsday fork over some cash they are getting from their massive subscription drive and send Katie to Russia for to get a Newsday exclusive? Better yet, how about the phone or the internets? I hear that Skype is pretty cheap for things like this and I am sure renting a russian translator for 1 hour can’t be that expensive.
The Whole Foods grocery store (headquarters in Austin, TX) near me has announced that they have an outdoor rink on top of their building. I went to see it and got a good laugh...but it is an outdoor patch of ice on top of a building in Austin, TX. I guess I should be impressed.
for to get*** I could use a translator.

Yeah, bizarre that no one has a word from the two in question. Botta talked about Klementyev’s otherwise talkative agent not returning his calls on the matter. I wonder if both of them are fine with the gambit. Maybe Anton says: “Hey, you need to get over here, and I need another Russian in Bridgeport.”

If im not mistaken
Petrovs contract is basically 4yrs – 4million
- basic math 1 million a yr
- 10% to agent 100,000 a yr
- avg AHL contract between 50-100 thousand a yr
- Petrov 100,000 a yr
- agent 10,000 a yr
Not sure if i was Petrov Id b in hury to get bridgeport and who knows if Garth has to maybe even buy-out his exgissisting contract. But it would b nice to see Kirill in our system sooner than later
all depends on his ultimate goals and dreams as a hockey player… sure he can make $ there, but then again, that’s not going to get him to the NHL any time soon…
why isn't #16 hanging in the rafters?
Now Strang says Klementyev and Petrov will be rooming together at the WJC. I suspect Anton can sell him (if he hasn’t already) on the merits of making the jump. Probably beats playing juniors in Russia.

Aside from the $ no one has said if the young gun has any interest in playing in the NHL. You have to wonder if all of this effort is for nothing. Hopefully Anton will talk some sense into him during the WJC.

When he was drafted and the year after
He let people know he wanted to make the NHL. Whether that was just prudent negotiating or what, I don’t know.

don't think Petrov is a this year guy
even if he agrees and the Isles buy him out, he’d probably spend most if not all of this year in Bridgeport. He would really be someone who could be special NEXT year. Love to see him, Bailey, and Hall on the same line. Or Nino Niederreiter. Not sure if Joensuu is second line material…but am willing to be convinced.
I have been thinking about this for a while but is it possible that if Snow pulls off this deal that he earns the respect of all the people who constantly criticize him for being Wang’s puppet GM? Maybe I’ll actually do a blog on this one but if you look at Snow’s resume since accepting the GM position it isn’t hard to see that he has made some remarkable deals with some solid drafting. Of course the drafting part is still yet to be determined but seeing some of the potential in the systems and the Gordon plan with young players it isn’t hard to see that if Kirill; 1) comes to the Islanders/Soundtigers 2) turns into a 20+ goal scorer with some grit in the NHL that this could be his masterpiece.
I know Snow really doesn’t show much of his thought process when it comes to moves made by the team but it is hard to see another GM walk away with some of the deals he has made. Being that KHL deals are somewhat challenging and uncharted negotiations it is possible that Snow can set a precident through this deal if the details are ever made public.

I have respected Garth's ability for some time
—the Smyth deal didn’t hurt us much and was probably something that had to be tried before he took the plunge into full bore rebuilding.
—it’s pretty clear to me at least that he made the right call with Josh over Wilson, Schenn, or Hodgson.
—the Streit and Moulson signings were absolutely brilliant.
—even I have to admit he made the right call picking JT over Big Victor. Still a little iffy about De Haan vs Kulikov, but De Haan sure has the look of a future star…as does Anders Lee.
Don’t know what Petrov may be capable of, but obviously you want him here working to become part of our system.
Probably would get him more credit
There will always be a sector making Wang jokes (and those are hard to pass up). But yeah, the people dismissing him would have to diminish — this is one of those unconventional moves that people would cite as bold, etc. It was surreal: Last night on the NHL Network “On the Fly” they had a phone interview with Tavares and then all three members of the panel were talking about how the Isles were headed in the right direction.
But I’m already a believer, for most of the reasons BC cited. I wish he would embrace the promotional role a little more (a club that needs fans should share more info), and I’d give him a minus for this year’s blueline, but overall I like his direction. And I wonder what Smith would have done at this stage, with virtually no funding to spend silly money.

I saw that interview last night on NHL as well. The end of the segment cracked me up. Here they are singing the praises of what a great group of young players they are and then finally they are given the question of wether or not the Isles are a playoff team to which both respond in a flat and cold “no.” That made me laugh. They were fair with their assessments of the team but they did not give Snow that much mention for being the active GM if I remember correctly.
The one thing that I wanted to say about the blueline is that he pulls talent in when he knows that it will work. At the beginning of the season I can honestly say that I did not blame him for not pulling in any d men. That is not to say that I was not disappointed but he did draft de Haan, pluck Streit out of the FA pool, and invide Hillen into the fold. So you have to think that he has a decent eye for d men thereby eliminating any thoughts of his inactivity right now or at the beginning of the season. That coupled with the thought of the Lighthouse project so-far-fail.

Ha, I think you’re right. Not sure if they mentioned Snow at all.
Yeah, I agree about his blueline approach. And I’m not sure if there was anyone available at the right fit at the right price — and if he’s riding out the existing contracts, then I’m fine with it. But ever since he told Logan he liked the blueline as is back in May (May-ish…around then), I’ve just always wondered if he really believed that, or if the reality was a little more nuanced and long-term focused. (Recognizing that as a GM you can’t exactly say “our current guys aren’t good enough, but we’re sticking with them until we can cut them loose.”)
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Seeing how he seems to be a man with a plan you know that he is eying something coming up. As everyone already realizes the FA market will be flooded in this off-season, giving a shrewd GM the opportunities necessary to acquire talent at cheap. So you know that he is saying one thing and realizing another. Once the season is over you know that at least half of the Isles d men will not be resigned.
This year will be more exciting than the last because it is really a mystery as to where he is going to go for his D. He could go in the draft or he could go for grit and sign some D. It is hard to say and that is why it will be exciting.

Snow job
I think Garth has done a helluva job since taking over a frachanise in termoil. Although his work has gone unnoticed to the casual hockey observer, those who seem to know what is what, have high praise for the job he’s done. A playoff bubble team @ several million worth of bonuses under the cap looks like real value. I bet Snow adds the “D” we need this summer at bargain pricing. Garth for exec. of the year for 2012 when every one will know.
