Place of Misplaced Worship: In Lou We Trust

Complete Coverage >

If you're just tuning in, some resources on the goalies (Biron is in), the Devils, and another Andy Sutton discussion (in comments) in those links above.

In Lou We Trust has the latest on the Devils, and I inserted John's answers to my Devils questions into the preview.

If Yann Danis continues the Islanders' scoreless streak into the 2nd period, then my name ain't Nathan Arizona. Wait ... my name ain't Nathan Arizona, so I better come up with something else.

I'll be around in the beginning, then have to bail for a Friday of frivolity. But if you're watching, take it away in comments and lemme know how it's done. Since this isn't preseason, hopefully it's not another 4-2 loss.

Here’s a little bit of a peace offering, kellyn. Check this video feed of a Team Sweden exhibition game against a Canadian university. Your boy Tedenby has a real solid game.

Elias v. Martinek

Little high hit behind the net. I don’t know if it’s because there aren’t many Czech defensemen, or there’s something about him, or I’m just tuned to it, but it seems the times mild-mannered Martinek shows the most fire is when a fellow Czech is messing with him.

Need the win tonight, without Kolyachuk playing Saturday that should be another win. Then the Isles have a 7 game road trip. It’ll be interesting to see how they do away from home for so long.

Weak Goal

Sounds like it was a weak goal on Biron. And to top it off the PP does nothing. After being the only way we scored in the beginning of the year the PP has been flat.

the superstitous side of me.

If they play the Devils well during the season they have a post season shot. If not it’s the lottery.

And this is a very winnable game against the Devs with Danis in instead of Broduer. The Isles should know everyone of his weaknesses very well.

by Mark D on Nov 6, 2009 8:45 PM EST up reply actions

My First Hockey Game

The first game I ever saw live was a Devils playoff game back in 92 or so. My dads company owned a piece of the Devs so we used to get tickets all the time. We were cheering for the Devs all night, and there was this goalie in the other net he seemed to have every bit of luck. He was flopping this way and that way and even when he came halfway out the net and started flopping around. At some point the Devs let in a goal, but we figured no big deal. At some point the goalie was going to be flopping and a puck would go in. It never happened as the opposing goalie seemed to have every inch of luck humanly possible. So as we left, me and my friend were talking about him and how he’d have no future in the NHL. BTW, the team the Devils were playing? The Sabres. The Goalie? Dominik Hasek.

by Mark D on Nov 6, 2009 8:40 PM EST reply actions

Awesome. You had me guessing. But of course, Hasek.

Columbus

Anyone else happy that Columbus appears to be failing? at the very least it should cool down some of the talk about KC being a Hockey Market.

Of course theres probably those of you who know the situation a lot better then me and that the failure in Columbus is a different situation then a team moving to KC.

A loss for OH all the same.....

One of my friends living in Cleveland has always been a bit dubious about hockey in OH, reminding me that it IS, after all, nicknamed ‘The Gridiron State’, but if the Blue Jackets fail, it will be a serious hit for shinny fans in Ohio after losing both the NHL and AHL variations of the Barons in a state that actually has a very long tradition of the sport – not to mention that Columbus is losing about the same amount of money each year as Wang…..

by ogam5 on Nov 6, 2009 8:52 PM EST up reply actions

Columbus though is infamous for being a Minor League city.

And at least with the Islanders, you have History that says people will show up for a good team.

Where has JT been tonight?

 - and I don’t mean Tamby! Tavares hasn’t a single shot this game…..not a good sign.

by ogam5 on Nov 6, 2009 9:03 PM EST reply actions

Really? He just had one right in front of the net. Maybe it missed, but it was a definite scoring chance.

by ogam5 on Nov 6, 2009 9:10 PM EST reply actions

Well it was a BETTER game, anyhow.....

…..seems like they had more life than last night and made a much stronger effort, but the PP is definitely struggling badly…..

by ogam5 on Nov 6, 2009 9:28 PM EST reply actions

Finally getting some 5-on-5 goals, now the PP is in a lull. Sometimes it’s tough to get much going when you only get a few PP chances, though. And of course it’s tough to get more chances if you’re not earning them.

Too many Penalties, another goal let in via a Screen, and a near dead PP. Against Danis the Isles should have known to throw as many shots as possible against him, yet only managed 22 shots on goal. A very winnable game against a good team. If Broduer was in net I’d be happy they kept it 2-1, but with Danis I expected a win tonight.

by Mark D on Nov 6, 2009 9:28 PM EST reply actions

While it may be true that Yann Danis is no Martin Brodeur, it’s important to remember that he’s playing in front of the Devils defense, which, despite being much-maligned as a ‘no-name’ defense, is really quite good (good enough to have been ranked fourth defensively last season despite playing fifty games without Brodeur in net). Danis doesn’t have to be outstanding or great, he just has to be reasonably good and the defense and forwards will do the the rest.

by kellyn on Nov 6, 2009 10:04 PM EST up reply actions

…And good enough to earn Scott Clemmensen a nice contract, which he’s yet to justify down in south Florida. This is exactly where the exaggerated-but-interesting “Brodeur is a Fraud” meme comes from.

Exactly. Clemmensen heads to take Anderson’s old spot in Florida, and results vary. But Anderson’s been on an upward path in his journey from Chicago to where he is now.

Until he plays the majority of this season people are going to say “yeah but.” At some point you just have to be impressed with a guy that locks it down every chance he gets. He looked real good against CHI tonight and at this point I have to imagine he’s one of the 3 Team USA goalies.

Yeah, I was one of the “yeah buts” on up through most of last season, until I got a look at him multiple times and leaned toward him just evolving and putting it all together. He’s been so impressive, and it’s frankly pretty cool to see a guy travel this road from what was a rough beginning on an awful Chicago team.

Yeah it’s always nice to see a guy stick with his game and find success. Whether he’s a late bloomer or just needed a better situation it makes it easy to root for him. Being American always helps as well (except for Tim Thomas on all accounts, for some reason).

I once did a post comparing every NJ Devil goalie whose been through the system since Broduer to what they did outside of the Devils. Almost all the backups (Dunham, Terreri, Schwab, Clemmensen) managed nearly the exact same stats as Brodeur while they were with the Devils. Here’s the averages.

Team GP GAA SV% SO
Devils(Backup) 13.7 2.19 .912 .88
Devils(Marty) 61.75 2.20 .914 6.3

And then here’s the Backups (Dunham, Terreri, Schwab) compared to Clemmensen

Team GP GAA SV% SO
Devils(Backup) 13.7 2.19 .912 .88
Devils(Clem) 40 2.39 .917 2

Makes you wonder what could have been of Terreri or Dunham if not for Brodeur. I didn’t use Weekes or Beezer for these since they weren’t products of the Devils system.

by Mark D on Nov 7, 2009 4:25 AM EST up reply actions

Fair enough

and not far off of many of the other anti-Brodeur posts on any number of sites around the web.

I’m by no means a Brodeur apologist, but stats aside, it comes down to one simple question: With a game or series on the line, who would you rather have had in net, Brodeur or (insert back-up with similar stats here)?

Some guys just have “it”, whatever it is. Call it puck luck, or an uncanny knack to be in the right place at the right time more often than not, or good karma or “clutch”. Some athletes just seem to do well, for whatever reason(s), when they need to most, and he’s been one of those guys more often than not throughout his career.

He hasn’t won them all, his play has obviously slipped over the years, and many arguments could be successfully made that this goalie or that is/was/will be better… but I don’t think even Brodeur haters are suggesting Clemmensen or Weekes should have been in net for game 7 of the Carolina series last year.

by elesias on Nov 7, 2009 10:52 AM EST up reply actions

That’s what makes it fascinating to me. Whatever stability the Devils have provided for him, well — he’s been an inherent part of creating that stability and confidence.

Anyway, as a Billy Smith fan, I hear you.
