Islanders Gameday vs. Flyers: Please don't hurt us

Complete Coverage >

It's a reflection of this year's unique goalie situation that Dwayne Roloson makes 58 saves Monday ... and sits Wednesday. Martin Biron's in against his old team, Brian Boucher's at the other end. ... Ex-Isle Arron Asham isn't as "out" as previously reported, so he might be in. ... Katie Strang says the Moulson/Tavares/Hunter line stays intact, while Jeff Tambellini plays with Josh Bailey and Jon Sim.

Extremes: Moulson and Tavares have 19 points each, Jeff Carter has 21 and Mike Richards 20. Richard Park and Brendan Witt are each minus-11, Braydon Coburn is minus-4. Moulson, Hillen, Hunter and Nielsen are each plus-6, Matt Carle is plus-18 and Pronger is plus-13. Pronger has 30 PIM, Tim Jackman has 51.

I think I will see this entire game live, but the recap will have to wait until after my annual Thanksgiving Eve pickup hockey and libation festival. But tomorrow's U.S. Thanksgiving, so ... I mean, we got time.

P.M. Prediction: I finally put that old Pronger Blues jersey on eBay. Never wore it anyway.

Fight: Laperriere v. Witt

Laperriere started it, just trying to get something going. Uneventful. Laperriere is just a fearless, hard-nosed player. Always has been. Plays bigger than his size.

Two big Biron saves on Hartnell

Good job boys! Keep it up! I gotta say, I like Bill Jaffe, I think he does a real good job analyzing the game and he’s the best color guy FSNY has had in as long as I can remember.

If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...

Pronger

Jaffe: “He’s getting ticked off because the Islanders are challenging him and doing it cleanly.”

Yes, I’ve watched him many years, and Pronger has never been a fan of the clean route. He likes the dirty slash though.

by Dominik on Nov 25, 2009 7:44 PM EST reply actions

And he doesn’t like guys that are all effort. When you try to be physical or dirty with him he’s in his element and he’ll give it back. But when you just skate and pressure and are relentless he hates it.

If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...

For such a great defenseman, it is just amazing how stupid he can be. Particularly for a big guy; it’s not like people are taking advantage of his size.

Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.

by Dominik on Nov 25, 2009 7:50 PM EST up reply actions

That’s one thing I don’t agree with: that being violent and taking lots of PIMs for it is a good thing. Chara got rewarded last year for all his PIMs but the way I look at it those were hurting his team if they weren’t the 5 minute off-setting variety. I really don’t think Chara deserved the Norris last year, he got a lifetime achievement award. Nonsense. (FWIW I still would have given it to Lidstrom, but even Green should have been ahead of Chara.)

If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...

by Rob Parker on Nov 25, 2009 7:56 PM EST up reply actions

Philosophically, agreed. The Norris is filled with lifetime achievement recipients, and the PIM thing is absurd. Lidstrom’s first was probably finally won for lifetime achievement (“He’s been good long enough … it’s time we finally recognize him.”)

I love that fantasy sports typically rewards PIMs. Like, huh?

Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.

by Dominik on Nov 25, 2009 8:18 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah Lidstrom had a ton of second place finishes before his first one. I don’t remember that season well enough to know who else should have won it but I do remember the vibe that “this guy needs to finally get one.” I understand there is an intimidation element to playing D, but there is a point where going to a box by showing how mean you are is counterproductive. These are NHL players, renowned for toughness, and you’re going to give them PPs to try to intimidate them?

If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...

Until that Witt penalty, I thought the Home Refs were going to give the Isles a free ride all night after the gruesome amount of penalties during the road trip.

Anyone else notice that Biron didn’t see the puck? He looked to his right as whoever shot it got it, and by the time he made a move to the left the puck was already in the net. I expect a lot more attempted screens by the Flyers.

And lets hope after 2 great periods that the 3rd isn’t a stinker.

Personally I think Okposo has to score, he’s just come so close so many times

BTW...

it seems I am wrong…it didn’t sound like Clement but they did a thing in the intermission with Howie, Billy, Clement, and the other guy Steve Coates about headshots.

Good stuff. Clement focused on the idea of hits to the head on unsuspecting players—-emphasizing unsuspecting—would be addressed while his partner Coates focused on the responsibility of the puckhandler to protect himself. Jaffe raised the point that they dealt with it in college hockey by making all hits to the head illegal. Clement used Zdeno Chara as an example and said that would be unrealistic. He finally said that NHL players—who he compared to fighter pilots in their ability to make quick decisions in a fastpaced environment—should be able to avoid bad headshots.

BTW...

Coates and Clement were able to show that Hartnell’s goal went in off Witter’s stick. Thanks again, Witter!!!

Well, that stunk.

Missed opportunities. Posts and whiffs and Boucher saves. Could have put them away in the first two (well “put them away” in the Islanders sense), but it didn’t happen.

I gotta run. Probably post something early tomorrow.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

in some ways...

even though we lost, this one left me with a better feeling than the Toronto game. We played a much better game against a much better team…and should have won.

would a fighter have helped

2nd the motion witter gotta go,

we nee Buff here fast make a trade, maybe Dom doesnt like paying Orr for 1mill a yr but theres an obvious reason GM’s r paying for them 1 certainly would of helped tonite

The thing is

Anyone could have started a fight if they wanted. Witt, Jackman, Thompson, etc. You don’t need a guy who can’t play but 5 minutes because he’s a liability. (example: Flyers’ Laperriere fighting twice — he fights a lot, but he’s not a one-trick enforcer.)

And sometimes, a fight by a guy who’s actually not just “a goon” can make a larger statement to the team. It’s “Wow, if HE fought, we really need a kick in the ass” versus “Oh, yeah, our goon and the other team’s goon threw down because that’s what they’re supposed to do.”

Poor Biron

He tried so hard, all he wanted was to show up his old team. He never gets any goal support.

Ugh

I’m home on Long Island for Thanksgiving, so this was the first game I’ve been able to watch on tv start to finish this year (I caught the 3rd period & OT of the Toronto game the other night) – any ideas why they just seem to lose all momentum in the 3rd? I’ve read about it all year, but actually seeing it was pretty striking. At least in the Caps game I went to a few weeks ago they came up with the clutch goal late, but even in that one they were pretty much dominated after a great early showing.

"[The Giants] beat us down. We were beat by a grown-man team, a team we want to be like one day. They came in here and took it to us. Out-manned us, out-gunned us. ... It wasn't even close." - Raheem Morris, 9/27/09

My thoughts

It was great to see the Isles come out with a great start and put the Flyers on their heels. Unfortunately, the Islanders turned their brains off after the 2nd period. I do NOT think the Isles looked "tired," I think they looked "dumb." They looked like none of them (save Biron) could make anything resembling an intelligent decision on-ice decision. Maybe they were thinking about turkey dinners and playing X-Box instead of hockey?

Im happy that Trent Hunters point streak lives on- but HOW many PPs did the Isles get after that? And- nothing? Im telling ya, 3 to 4 more weeks without Weight on the PP totally sucks. It cant keep going the same way in the meantime.

Ralph Macchio? Thats cool. He looks good! :)

I hate to say it but I am worried about Kyle Okposo- he is not looking good the last few games. He picked good songs for the warm up skate though!

There were far fewer Flyers fans than usual for a game like this- which I guess ended up being a good thing considering the outcome. I gues the top price for these games discouraged them from forking out for tickets and transportation, too… which is not a good thing for the Islanders, who need every ticket they can sell.

Chris Prongers head is too small for his body.

How annoying was it to see Richard Park thrown out of the faceoff circle so many times? Come ON.

CALM DOWN with the crowd bumpers! I understand that you inexplicably feel a NEED to do something every shitting time there is a stoppage in play, but its gotten to the point where they extend whatever theyre doing (everybody clap yo hands- for like 2 minutes straight!) or, whatever they are doing ends- and they cannot BEAR to have even a millisecond that isnt filled with some inane activity so they start something else up- a song, a clap, and you only get .8 seconds of before the puck is dropped. WTH is so terrible nowadays about a tiny moment of blessed silence???

The announcement before the game of Baileys goal streak and how he has to score again tonight for it to continue made me want to punch the announcer in the teeth. SHUT UP with things like that, you frickin jinx.

This was a great game from Marty Biron. The problem is that he puts on a great show like this and gets NO goal support. Another L, and he let up only 2 goals- that sucks! He has a better save% than Roloson, but the guy only has 2 wins and one of them he pitched a shutout! Its not fair and I feel bad for him.

Let Us Go, Islanders!
(Ever notice how strange that sounds without the contraction?)

Now THIS is an ironic comment.....

…..coming from someone who calls herself ‘The Metal Chick’ (just kidding, C:) But you’re absolutely RIGHT; how many times can one be subjected to Rednex’ “Cotton-Eyed Joe”, Black Box with Martha Wash or any number of cheesy Nineties ‘rallying’ devices before losing their senses?

This

I hate how no hockey arena can allow the crowd to build its own noise nowadays. All this force-fed, 15-second samples (abruptly cut off at the faceoff, leading to sudden silence when play resumes instead of letting the crowd continue its natural buzz. A little silence makes the noisy moments sound ALIVE instead of just another “every-body-clap-your-hands cha-cha-cha” forced moment.

But I miss letting organists call the shots.

Pretenders

I sensethis is the begining of a 4 game losing streak. They absolutely cant hold a lead! Its like they are allergic to winning! Cant they play 60 minutes of hockey? First 2 periods they were agressive and motivated, then in the 3rd they just didnt show up to play! Its sad that Tambellini didnt get an SOG which means we wont see him for the next 3 games. Scott Gordon makesme scratch my head alot lately. Gotta jumpstart KO!
