Sopel for Picks?

An article in TSN http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=299097 suggests that the Chicago Blackhawks might offer draft picks for any team that agreed to take on the salary of former Islander Brent Sopel. Are you having any of it? I know how we all felt about the Sopel tenure on the Island, but we do need a depth defenseman and the picks would be nice. After the jump, a link to a photo of Brent that is just wrong!!!

Yikes, that photo

If it came to it, I’d accept Sopel’s cap hit for picks (the right picks). Particularly if they can flip Sutton at the deadline.

But I’m still suspicious whether Chicago will go that desperate route vs. just burying him in the minors. Also, given their tight purse strings, I doubt Wang/Snow agree to pay a guy who doesn’t, uh, “fit the program.”

the question...

would Chicago rather pay Sopel several million to play AHL hockey or would they rather surrender a few picks (don’t know what would be appropriate) and have someone else pay him?

Would Garth be willing to pay Sopel to be a reserve defender if that got him some draft picks he would nee in June and gave him some depth? Perhaps Chicago might also hint at potential deadline and summer trades that might be beneficial to the Isles if this deal were done.

Those are the questions. I wonder what Wang would say about the financials.

Perhaps Chicago might also hint at potential deadline and summer trades

However unlikely, I endorse all under-the-table dealings that benefit the Islanders without them getting caught. :)

Chicago might say it had an interest in Marty and Andy and Garth might say we had an interest in more picks...

Garth might also say that we would like to get a top four defenseman this summer and the Bowmans might say that was an interesting coincidence.

OK...how about this?

Garth: So I take Sopel and one of your second rounders now and later?

Bowman: Later we’ll talk about…

Garth: About….more picks?

Bowman: Did I say picks? We’ll talk about mutton and Sutton, a party and Marty

Garth: Dogs and a Barker

Bowman: Hillen and Dylan

Garth: What were we talking about?

Bowman: Beats me? Were we talking?

Garth: Nah.

Toronto in this picture?

Shoalts at the Globe & Mail has Burke offering to accept Sopel along with a 2nd-round pick:

Burke is offering to take Sopel, who played for him when he ran the Vancouver Canucks, plus, say, a second-round draft pick to solve the Blackhawks’ problem. But Sopel is a decent player, so Hawks GM Stan Bowman is getting a lot of calls and may get a better offer.

Who is saying Sopel is a decent player?

He is no better than a reserve defender on any decent team and is getting paid at least twice what he should be getting paid. Hillen and Gervais are both better and are getting paid about a third or less what he is. Any GM who gives Bowman a better offer than that is a moron. Also what other teams have the cap space to take on Sopel. I am not even sure that Burke does. In fact, according to NHL Numbers, he has virtually no space and would have to move a big salary to take on Sopel. He’d be an even bigger moron than we already think he is if he did that.

Easily a third of the league has the cap space for Sopel. (Not that they should do so, but the space is there…). And any figuring with Burke has to assume that he’d bury a salary in the minors first, because he can afford to do that.

I’ll admit that there are more teams with the cap space than I thought….BUT most of them would have virtually NO cap space if they took Sopel on. The Isles are one of a handful of teams that could easily absorb Sopel’s cap hit. Which player on the Toronto roster with a cap hit comparable to Sopel’s is less valuable than he is?

THAT’S the big question, isn’t it? Sounds like Burke wants to make changes just to make a change. I wondered if he’d be taking Sopel just to demote him, but I don’t think that’s possible without him first clearing other salary.

To me, if he is going to do that with his cap situation as it is, he should bring in an impact player

and send a salary out. There’s a lot of talk about Kubina. He could probably get some really good forward for him. If he didn’t mind trading with Montreal, they might give him the Kostitsyns.

by BCISLEMAN on Nov 23, 2009 4:58 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Assume you mean Kaberle

Hilariously, he already cashed in the Kubina chip for something called Garnet Exelby.

With Kaberle he’s had a point, though: If we trade him, we’ll just be chasing the same type of defenseman on the market next summer.

I did mean Kaberle

and he could make a play for Gonchar or go cheap and get Babchuk. In fact, I think Seidenberg will be a UFA.

Sim is so bad...

thats really it, just wanted to let it out before i explode watching this clown play vs toronto

I think being bad was a team effort tonight

save for Roly and for a few minutes in the 2nd and OT periods.

by BCISLEMAN on Nov 23, 2009 11:04 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah def one of the worste third periods ive seen in a while… Not Sim’s fault, i was just putting that out there. Nothing to do with the game tonight… Great win, hopefully they realize when they stop skating with the lead they tend to get dominated. One day better…

Sim gets his share of abuse...

I just hope that he impresses enough GMs to rate a third round pick.

no chance, the guy would clear waivers if we put him out there

why isn't #16 hanging in the rafters?

Maybe on waivers at the deadline

…when he has little money left on his deal. But every team passed on him last year on waivers; haven’t seen anything to tell me they’d change their mind, other than the money factor.

Some day … some day. I think they’ve been better about it this year, closing out some wins over Edmonton and Boston. For me, one of the issues last night is they weren’t playing well to begin with, so the 3-0 lead was almost an accident rather than the result of sustainable work.

I thought that would be the chance: Okay, you don’t deserve this lead, but you’ve taken everything the Leafs have and come out with a lead, so the 30th-place team should be deflated and ripe for the kill. No such luck.

our counterparts were taking consolation in JT being a non-factor...also,

I noted MM being psyched by saying to himself that he’d just scored a goal in the ACC. Hopefully this team develops into a champion and some newly minted prospect is saying wow, I just scored a goal in the Lighthouse!

I hear that

But Moulson was there after Tavares, so surely…?

The ultimate decider is that Moulson said in his non hat trick game that “Johnny’d kill me if I took one of his goals,” and today it appears Moulson still walks this Earth.
