Useless Stat of the Day

I came across a puzzling stat yesterday, and wonder exactly why this is....maybe you can help explain why???

ISLANDERS Games Power Plays Average/Gm Penalty Kills Average/Gm
Home 9 28 3.11 28 3.11
Road 12 48 4.00 53 4.42

REST OF NHL Games Power Plays Average/Gm Penalty Kills Average/Gm
Home 297 1237 4.16 1169 3.94
Road 294 1149 3.91 1212 4.12

We simply get and take a lot more penalties while away from the Coli --

to the tune of 8.42 special teams situations on the road, and only 6.22 when home

Hmm...

The refs just want to get out of the Coliseum as quickly as possible?

That is curious. Home record is 5-2-2, road record is 3-4-5 … can’t say games in either realm have been more or less competitive. Maybe it’s just the refs or teams they’ve run into on the road thus far? Or they’re grumpier on the road and bring that out in other teams?

P.S. “Useless Stat of the Day” — I like it. Now the problem’s going to stick in my head all day…

well, it may or may not useless, but it feels useless when i can’t figure out why it is like that… for now, i’ll go with you, that the refs are trying to make it quick and painless…

why isn't #16 hanging in the rafters?

I love the “lets get out of NVMC fast” theory lol!

Heres a possible idea: The Isles know the quirkiness of the Coli better than other teams do- the bad ice, the bizarre bounces off the boards, etc… and since other teams dont, they take more penalties as a result of it. The way we might be able to support this is to look at the stats for other teams with quirky arenas that have bad ice or quirky boards and see if the same trend applies.

Lets go Islanders...

that’s a tall order, and since i’ve only been to 3 rinks i’m highly unqualified to assess that, lol

But they’re taking more and committing more on the road than at home (a trend that continued tonight in Minnesota, incidentally).
