Islanders-Bruins [game thread]
New York Islanders at Boston Bruins, Nov 16, 2009 7:00 PM EST
Faceoffs: On this road trip's first three games, the Islanders faceoff percentage has been 42%, 43%, and 45%. Ever since we were raving about their early-season dominance ... have other teams adjusted? Is it just that it's harder to get the video scouting and practice implementation on the road? Or something else?
Q&A at NESN: Elsewhere, NESN.com's Neil Keefe sought my answers to his questions about the Islanders. Check those out and, as always, give me hell if you disagree or have more to add.
In Net: Martin Biron [Actually: Dwayne Roloson. I can't keep track these days] stares the length of the ice at something known in Finland as a "Tuukka Rask," which can be solved with the application of topical ointment.
This is the official in-game thread. Now tap that keg and do it right. Let's-go Isl-an-ders.

Neither here nor there, but...
Josh Bailey’s draft classmate Nikita Filitov is a healthy scratch tonight, and they even had an AHL call-up so they could do the deed.
In other words, this stuff takes time.

Dropping the 1st puck is David Ortiz
The NESN graphic lists him as “designated hitter,” which made me guffaw.
It’d be like a hockey player going to throw out a first pitch, and being announced as “shootout taker.”
/disrespect the DH

No love! I saw Huffington Post added a sports section, and one of the earliest posts was from Mastui’s agent praising his merits as he goes into free agency.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
And you expected his agent to???
I mean I’m sure Chris Chelios’ agent isn’t running around to papers giving interviews saying he should retire.
I just couldn’t believe HuffPo was saying, “Here’s some sports coverage” by using an ode to self interest from Arn Tellem.
/all seriousness, I respect Matsui.

Did he say, “ever heard of defense?”
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
…and I was worried about Streit’s awkward fall. He seems just fine.

Now that you mention it....
- Hideki is but one of 3 Yankees I can say I like; was a rumor he might be going to the Red Sox but with Big Papi still a force, not gonna happen…..BTW, Dom, were you rooting for the Phillies?
I abstained.
I’ve actually 95% swore off baseball. Still a twinkle in my eye every once in a while, but … life’s easier this way.

Actually, this was supposed to add that I’ve 95% sworn off baseball. Still a twinkle in my eye every once in a while, but life’s easier this way.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Couldn’t agree more, the 94 strike really killed me on baseball. I still try to follow it, but even with my love of stats, baseball stats are insane. I swear some of them are fake just to torture people.
Yeah, ‘94 for me, too. Actually, what’s kept me paying attention here in there is the evolution of stats. Been interesting to watch that evolve … actually what exposed me to SBN initially, too. Some baseball blogs on SBN are seriously stat-focused.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Haha, hadn’t thought of that. Yes, Moulson is “The Cleansing.”
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Moulson!
Love it, great timing.

Oh man. You better be careful. Devils fans do not take kindly to disrespecting the trap.

Baha, I know. They should just accept the winning formula and all the boredom that comes with it.
Hearing Lemaire described as no longer trapping sounds like a battered spouse in denial: “But he said he’d change!”
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Nice.
I really could have used that line a couple days ago. After the two recent games against NJD I had some Devilzzz fans on my ass because of my trap hate. Unbelievable.

Jaffe steps in with the save. “He’s better.”
Similar noses around the net perhaps. Very dissimilar eyebrows.

I TELL ya.....
- Moulson looks uncannily like Ziggy! Darker hair, but the expressions are the SAME – to say nothing of the goals:)
Post game comment: He had a great game, I was saying throughout and my friend was like Im not noticing. I was like LOOK beyond the points, man. Glad Im not the only one who noticed.

Agreed. And I don’t fault him for missing on the Hunter setup. You hit the post, you’ve not blown it in my mind.

Ugh, no doubt. I turned to them during MSG commercials, but that’s all I can stomach.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Hilarious … and scary. For a moment I thought “Don’t tell me he’s injured again and this is how.”
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
That was one of those shotless PPs
…that still looked good. Thought Tavares was burying a rebound for sure.
…and MacDonald with a little late PP action!

Ruh-roh
Tough call for a 5-on-3. Hillen one the strength battle too well.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Have we had a ton of these this year? It feels like it. Ugh, 90 seconds is too long, my stomach’s in knots.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Nice, Bergenheim!
Dribbling the puck out with his feet. Agree, he could’ve drawn a penalty there.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Chara
Man, I don’t know how they stand in front of Chara as he lines up for that shot. I’d be scared to death to actually block one of his shots.
I was thinking the same thing! And with him even closer on the 5-on-3. I was thinking Thompson, just run away, don’t let him kill you.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
End of 1st: 1-0
Not bad, not bad. Goal from Moulson crashing the net, and a huge 5-on-3 kill.
Now…the dreaded 2nd period.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
That bad? Damn. I noticed particularly the 2-man-short faceoff.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
That, of course.....
- is why you really, REALLY want Z on your side…..wait; he was, wasn’t he…..hey, is that Lance Bass up in the booth with Bobby Farelly?
Correction....
- ‘Farrelly’, and it’s Bob Sweeney…..good; don’t need an N’Sync reunion anytime soon!
Woo woo, nice play by Hillen.

Wow, even Brent Sutter had 24 points in his first 20 games. What a team.

Recchi, who drew the 5-on-3, squanders the last 30 of this PP with a crosscheck penalty.

Rollie’s looking like he’s on fire, Can’t blame Recchi, he had a great chance and Rollie robbed him.
Haha. Yes, Rollie lookin’ good so far. He’s got the theatric jazz hands going.

Wang in lively conversation with Milbury in a suite
“So it turns out, all those years you left me with shit. Shit I tell you! You bastard! And now you have this cush media job! What are your qualifications?! How do you snow people over? What’s your secret?
… but still, you were much more tolerable than Kate Murray."

According to Forbes, the Islanders have been losing 5-6 million the last 2 seasons. Yashin’s buyout? 2.5 Mill till 2012. DiPietro? 4 Million. Coincidence?
Haha … man, just making the cap floor is a net loss now.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Ugh Howie...
“Milbury was a good boss” you know, unless you had to negotiate a contract with him, or if you were a young player in development.
Yeah, “this commentary dictated by my bosses.”
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Dammit
Great play by Meyer to break up 2-on-1. But now they got a goal anyway. Grrr. Sloppy play.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Andy Sutton
Is not very good. He’s gotta find a way to stop that pass.
If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...
Agree 100%.
Careful, though, some folks around here think that Sutton is a surefire hall of famer. . . . :)
Knew that’d bring you out!
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Busted
How long ago did you think he’d be good? It’s been a while since he had a chance.
If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...
That's the scary thing
Sutton’s actually had his shining moments this year.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
I'm sorry for you
If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...
The tyranny of low expectations, perhaps? With Martinek out, he’s probably the Isles’ 3rd-best defenseman. Which makes 7-6-7 look really impressive.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
You watch him more than I do. I mostly just remember seeing him goon it up in ATL or getting beat because he has slow feet.
If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...
I remember that as well. Not much gooning these days, just the hip check, which has had a surprising success rate this year. But still slow feet, and random complete misses.
The last part describes most Isles D-men not named Streit. It’s an inconsistent or undersized bunch. Sutton’s mistakes look bad, but they’re hardly unique to him.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Is there help on the way? You’ve got an awfully nice looking crop of young forwards. They got a compliment?
If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...
Travis Hamonic should be a stud (with size). Calvin de Haan looks very smooth, but he’s undersized. Other than that, there are some maybes.
My pet peeve all summer was the blueline. But I assume Snow is letting contracts expire and then taking advantage of any salary dumps/cap squeezes/free agents — so I’m prepared to be very ornery if that doesn’t happen.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Gotcha. That’s pretty much the last thing the Caps are waiting for to develop. We aren’t winning with the group you guys have been seeing, I don’t think.
If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...
That’s what has me really intrigued — how well the Caps can do with that blueline. The Pens’ blueline didn’t seem too impressive on paper last year, but still better than the Caps?
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Yeah better than the Caps. It helped that theirs was much more healthy but I think theirs is still better. Can’t say I’d trade because we’ve got Mike Green, but for now theirs is better. We’ve got two high prospects ready to make the jump when GMGM makes the room. I think one will this year and the other will start next year.
If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...
Is Alzner one, still? Did you hear that season-long journal with different Caps, including him? (I heard it on NHL radio, with an English woman as narrator)
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Hockey Diaries. Amazing piece. Yeah he’s the one that’s ready now. He’s in the AHL lighting it up. He is a shutdown guy so his point totals aren’t great but he’s tied for the AHL lead in +/- at 14. The guy he’s tied with is John Carlson, his D partner and the other top prospect. He’s way more offensive and has a ton of points but probably needs another year to polish his game. He went to Hershey for the playoffs after his OHL season ended last year and now he’s a rookie pro. I’m getting anxious.
If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...
Andy Sutton is what he is
which isn’t really that bad. No one on the team—forward or defenseman—can deliver a game-changing bodycrushing hit the way he does and after Streit, he’s our best offensive threat from the blueline.
Cross your fingers....
…..NO WAY – JT was checked into the frickin’ net, wasn’t he? Still, that 2-fer Meyer got with one of the most dismissive bodychecks I’ve ever seen AFTER a magnifcent pokecheck was highlight-reel worthy…..
Julien has a beef
“…and ou better not call a 5-on-3. Only we can get 5-on-3’s.”
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Well, Tavares alone in front of the net. Can’t say we didn’t get a damn chance.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Clearly JT only has a job because of Moulson’s connections.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
I’m really liking your idea of him exorcising bad MM vibes.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
MM baby!
Oh, that just rocked. Yes, yes, yes. Thank you Tuukka.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
She is going to flip.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Great stuff there at the end. I don’t know if it’s my own chest-thumping in my living room, but it looked like they walked off the ice with a swagger. This is theirs to take if they play smart.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Oh, off the post! Hunter with a sweet forechecking play behind the net. That’s quality Gordon-style.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
This is going to be a verrrry scary third period
Bruins are gonna throw the kitchen sink at us and throw a ton of borderline hits.
Isles are gonna need two more goals here to put this away.
…and consistency from the refs.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
That’s just horrible. Losing them on the PP, too.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Witt's first 2-goal game earlier
Tavares’s last game … Moulson’s tonight. Who’s next?
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Ooooh yeah!
And another goal where Gordon Hockey > Julien Hockey. Now about holding that lead…
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Moulson's goal is actually Tavares's?
That man knows how to help a friend.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
I don’t know what bute-ing is, but I’m glad he didn’t do that either.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Howie and Jaffe seem to think that’s what’s up, and that Moulson was actually telling the ref so.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
That was an awful powerplay
They can’t let up like that. Come on boys, finish this. Use your lesson book.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
WOW - you're right.....
- one more character player! Maybe that’s the most important factor as to why we’re winning…..

Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Have to laugh
The NESN.com writer asked me what’s the difference with the Isles this year, and my answer was something like “health + Tavares + Moulson + goaltending,” and for one night (so far) at least, I sound like I actually know what I’m talking about.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
That sounds almost exactly like what COL could say except they also got good coaching this year.
If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...
All the cluster they went through with hanging Granato out there and courting Roy, for Sacco to work out is amazing.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
I don’t think Roy will ever get a chance to head coach in the NHL. Goalies don’t get the same level of respect when it comes to overall knowledge of the game.
I was really hoping he’d get that one and then (continue to) make an ass of himself.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
aww, Gotta love Roy, at the very least for one of the greatest hockey quotes of all time, “Tell Jeremy I can’t hear what he’s saying with both my Stanley Cup Rings in my ears”
I loved that one, and the talking to posts was gratifyingly crazy-goalie-esque. But all the stuff coaching his kid and his (ahem) domestic life strikes me as a guy full of himself and lacking perspective.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Spot on.
If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...
Excellent, Bergie
Drawing the penalty … now let’s not sit on this one.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Nice. I thought something was up earlier when I heard loud gasps every time Tavares had the puck in close.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
I love that every time an airborne pass goes to Tavares I expect him to bat it in. What an odd feeling this is.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
His hands are ridiculous. He needs to do a Tiger Woods puck juggling commercial, stat.
If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...
They must be still hoping Crosby can do it.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
True.
If nobody gets on it then the Isles need to just do it for local promoting. Wasn’t he supposed to be marketable or something?
If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...
Jack Edwards= Perpetual dick
just can’t admit that the Islanders were the better team tonight.
Damn — I flipped back to NESN but the DVR’s lost that feed. That’s typical.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Personally, I think we were out played. Spent a lot more time in our zone, a 5 penalty night, horrible on the faceoffs. But when we got the chances we finished them, and Rollie’s play was just unreal.
Fair points. I like that they didn’t have much of an answer for coming back, though. And the Isles forecheck basically created 3 goals, while the B’s did not (largely thanks to Roloson, but still).
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Don’t get me wrong, a win is a win is a win, especially in regulation against a conference opponent. I think this was the answer to what I was complaining about, when were the Isles going to get a good game from the Goalie and the Offense.
Yes, exactly. All those factors came together, including that huge 5-on-3 kill.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Classic Moulson
“My future brother-in-law Sean told me he needed a big fantasy night out of me tonight.”

well...
I thought the Isles should’ve gone after Streit as I was checking his stats during the 07-08 season. That worked out pretty well. And I was predicting Moulson would be big within a few weeks of his signing. Maybe the Isles should hire me!!!
Anyway, Garth, if you’re reading this:
1) Keep your eye on Anders Lee. He will be our Jordan Staal and maybe the next president.
2) Keep your other eye on Nino Niederreiter and Troy Rutkowski of the Portland Winterhawks and if you can figure out a way to draft both of them this summer, do it.
My Moulson man-crush is now fully operational.
Seriously, they need to start going to him more often for between-period interviews, because he actually says interesting things.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
The way Hunts is playing as well as Frans (even the Boston homers were oohing and aahing over that assist)
bring back Tambellini and you have yourself a fairly potent second line behind Moulson—Tavares—Okposo
I'd like him a lot more
If he didn’t go to Cornell.

agree with you there, i am a jersey guy, so i’ll pull for the local kids a lot to make it or do well after they make it, like, Porcello in MLB, Ray Rice and Kenny Britt in the NFL, not aware of any Jersey NHL’ers at the moment
why isn't #16 hanging in the rafters?
Normally I’m with you. I’ll generally pull for anyone that a) is from Long Island; b) is American; c) went through NCAA. But Cornell is the exception. They were the rival for my school, as far as hockey. So I hate them.

change the logo dumbass
and show the Isles the respect they deserve
Who are you talking to?
And who do you think is disrespecting the Isles? And why wouldn’t you have a look around before you make an incorrect assumption about someone’s motives? This site has a thread for all 82 games, and it doesn’t use the same logo every time.
A quick, simple self-evident notice: No one’s going to pay attention long when you just troll around sites (like your comments at the Bruins and Rangers blogs) to rub in an Isles victory. It’s not how we roll, and not worth anyone’s time.
