Islanders Gameday: Extending Julien's headache
Andrew MacDonald up, Brendan Witt out

Complete Coverage >

Faceoffs: On this road trip's first three games, the Islanders faceoff percentage has been 42%, 43%, and 45%. Ever since we were raving about their early-season dominance ... have other teams adjusted? Is it just that it's harder to get the video scouting and practice implementation on the road? Or something else?

Q&A at NESN: Elsewhere, NESN.com's Neil Keefe sought my answers to his questions about the Islanders. Check those out and, as always, give me hell if you disagree or have more to add.

In Net: Martin Biron [Actually: Dwayne Roloson. I can't keep track these days] stares the length of the ice at something known in Finland as a "Tuukka Rask," which can be solved with the application of topical ointment.

This is the official in-game thread. Now tap that keg and do it right. Let's-go Isl-an-ders.

Neither here nor there, but...

Josh Bailey’s draft classmate Nikita Filitov is a healthy scratch tonight, and they even had an AHL call-up so they could do the deed.

In other words, this stuff takes time.

Dropping the 1st puck is David Ortiz

The NESN graphic lists him as “designated hitter,” which made me guffaw.

It’d be like a hockey player going to throw out a first pitch, and being announced as “shootout taker.”

No love! I saw Huffington Post added a sports section, and one of the earliest posts was from Mastui’s agent praising his merits as he goes into free agency.

I just couldn’t believe HuffPo was saying, “Here’s some sports coverage” by using an ode to self interest from Arn Tellem.

Couldn’t agree more, the 94 strike really killed me on baseball. I still try to follow it, but even with my love of stats, baseball stats are insane. I swear some of them are fake just to torture people.

Yeah, ‘94 for me, too. Actually, what’s kept me paying attention here in there is the evolution of stats. Been interesting to watch that evolve … actually what exposed me to SBN initially, too. Some baseball blogs on SBN are seriously stat-focused.

I remember that as well. Not much gooning these days, just the hip check, which has had a surprising success rate this year. But still slow feet, and random complete misses.

The last part describes most Isles D-men not named Streit. It’s an inconsistent or undersized bunch. Sutton’s mistakes look bad, but they’re hardly unique to him.

Travis Hamonic should be a stud (with size). Calvin de Haan looks very smooth, but he’s undersized. Other than that, there are some maybes.

My pet peeve all summer was the blueline. But I assume Snow is letting contracts expire and then taking advantage of any salary dumps/cap squeezes/free agents — so I’m prepared to be very ornery if that doesn’t happen.

by Dominik on Nov 16, 2009 9:15 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah better than the Caps. It helped that theirs was much more healthy but I think theirs is still better. Can’t say I’d trade because we’ve got Mike Green, but for now theirs is better. We’ve got two high prospects ready to make the jump when GMGM makes the room. I think one will this year and the other will start next year.

Hockey Diaries. Amazing piece. Yeah he’s the one that’s ready now. He’s in the AHL lighting it up. He is a shutdown guy so his point totals aren’t great but he’s tied for the AHL lead in +/- at 14. The guy he’s tied with is John Carlson, his D partner and the other top prospect. He’s way more offensive and has a ton of points but probably needs another year to polish his game. He went to Hershey for the playoffs after his OHL season ended last year and now he’s a rookie pro. I’m getting anxious.

which isn’t really that bad. No one on the team—forward or defenseman—can deliver a game-changing bodycrushing hit the way he does and after Streit, he’s our best offensive threat from the blueline.

I don’t know what bute-ing is, but I’m glad he didn’t do that either.

Who announced that?

JT got the goal after all instead of MM?

by ogam5 on Nov 16, 2009 9:06 PM EST reply actions

Howie and Jaffe seem to think that’s what’s up, and that Moulson was actually telling the ref so.

That was an awful powerplay

They can’t let up like that. Come on boys, finish this. Use your lesson book.

Have to laugh

The NESN.com writer asked me what’s the difference with the Isles this year, and my answer was something like “health + Tavares + Moulson + goaltending,” and for one night (so far) at least, I sound like I actually know what I’m talking about.

That sounds almost exactly like what COL could say except they also got good coaching this year.

All the cluster they went through with hanging Granato out there and courting Roy, for Sacco to work out is amazing.

Yeah it looked like a mess. I did not see it working out this well at all.

I don’t think Roy will ever get a chance to head coach in the NHL. Goalies don’t get the same level of respect when it comes to overall knowledge of the game.

by Mark D on Nov 16, 2009 9:18 PM EST up reply actions

I was really hoping he’d get that one and then (continue to) make an ass of himself.

aww, Gotta love Roy, at the very least for one of the greatest hockey quotes of all time, “Tell Jeremy I can’t hear what he’s saying with both my Stanley Cup Rings in my ears”

by Mark D on Nov 16, 2009 9:20 PM EST up reply actions

I loved that one, and the talking to posts was gratifyingly crazy-goalie-esque. But all the stuff coaching his kid and his (ahem) domestic life strikes me as a guy full of himself and lacking perspective.

Nice. I thought something was up earlier when I heard loud gasps every time Tavares had the puck in close.

True.

Personally, I think we were out played. Spent a lot more time in our zone, a 5 penalty night, horrible on the faceoffs. But when we got the chances we finished them, and Rollie’s play was just unreal.

by Mark D on Nov 16, 2009 9:32 PM EST up reply actions

Fair points. I like that they didn’t have much of an answer for coming back, though. And the Isles forecheck basically created 3 goals, while the B’s did not (largely thanks to Roloson, but still).

Don’t get me wrong, a win is a win is a win, especially in regulation against a conference opponent. I think this was the answer to what I was complaining about, when were the Isles going to get a good game from the Goalie and the Offense.

by Mark D on Nov 16, 2009 9:56 PM EST up reply actions

Yes, exactly. All those factors came together, including that huge 5-on-3 kill.

Matt Moulson is one of my favorite Islanders to listen to- he seems like such a fun, happy kid!

Lets go Islanders...

by TheMetalChick on Nov 16, 2009 11:37 PM EST up reply actions

well...

I thought the Isles should’ve gone after Streit as I was checking his stats during the 07-08 season. That worked out pretty well. And I was predicting Moulson would be big within a few weeks of his signing. Maybe the Isles should hire me!!!

Anyway, Garth, if you’re reading this:

1) Keep your eye on Anders Lee. He will be our Jordan Staal and maybe the next president.

2) Keep your other eye on Nino Niederreiter and Troy Rutkowski of the Portland Winterhawks and if you can figure out a way to draft both of them this summer, do it.

by BCISLEMAN on Nov 17, 2009 1:16 AM EST up reply actions

My Moulson man-crush is now fully operational.

Seriously, they need to start going to him more often for between-period interviews, because he actually says interesting things.

The way Hunts is playing as well as Frans (even the Boston homers were oohing and aahing over that assist)

bring back Tambellini and you have yourself a fairly potent second line behind Moulson—Tavares—Okposo

I'd like him a lot more

agree with you there, i am a jersey guy, so i’ll pull for the local kids a lot to make it or do well after they make it, like, Porcello in MLB, Ray Rice and Kenny Britt in the NFL, not aware of any Jersey NHL’ers at the moment

why isn't #16 hanging in the rafters?

Normally I’m with you. I’ll generally pull for anyone that a) is from Long Island; b) is American; c) went through NCAA. But Cornell is the exception. They were the rival for my school, as far as hockey. So I hate them.

by greg122 on Nov 17, 2009 12:06 PM EST reply actions

Who are you talking to?

And who do you think is disrespecting the Isles? And why wouldn’t you have a look around before you make an incorrect assumption about someone’s motives? This site has a thread for all 82 games, and it doesn’t use the same logo every time.

A quick, simple self-evident notice: No one’s going to pay attention long when you just troll around sites (like your comments at the Bruins and Rangers blogs) to rub in an Isles victory. It’s not how we roll, and not worth anyone’s time.
