Islanders Gameday: No Ovechkin, no Martinek - no problem. Flu bug? Problem.
Blasted Swine: Kyle Okposo has H1N1 flu

Complete Coverage >

Note: This game is also on the NHL Network in the U.S., with the Caps' feed.

Dwayne Roloson in net. Trent Hunter in -- conveniently returning for, but not replacing, Kyle Okposo. Blake Comeau almost certainly out (and possibly headed back to L.I., if he's that sick), in which case Rob Schremp returns. Alas, sounds like Mike Green is back, which totally breaks the whole sit-more-than-one-weapon handshake agreement I thought we had.

Scott Gordon told Katie Strang that Hunter has "probably the best shot on the team, in terms of release and accuracy." I'm going to assume a statement like that comes with obligatory "except John Tavares" fine print, 'cause ain't nobody placed a corner shot or hit as many posts this year as Tavares.

This here is the in-game thread. Like the diapers in Raising Arizona, "it's got them tapettes already on there. It's self-contained and fairly explanatory." Have fun. Let's. Go. H1N1-ders.

Looks like it’ll be a high scoring game tonight…

LOL. As quickly as I could think “uh-oh, this isn’t Atlanta,” Moulson is there evening it up. Wild.

Forgot to mention, this one’s on the NHL Network in the U.S.

Yikes

Let’s maybe try not to give Semin too many open chances in front, eh?

Yeah, no kidding. Such a great player.

Alright, Streit!

just 5:10 in — what the heck is going on here?

Not sure, but it’s fun to watch.

Schremp with an assist too. I’m pulling for him to prove he can play in the NHL.

Bergenheim breakaway!

3-1. This is surreal.

I think that might’ve been one of the Semin turnovers Caps fans talk about. Shied from a hit at the blueline, gave it up clean.

Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.

by Dominik on Nov 11, 2009 7:20 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, good call. Could not have been a worse giveaway for him.

Great shot by Bergenheim

by Cal_IslandersFan on Nov 11, 2009 7:20 PM EST up reply actions

Indeed. I was just a little bit nervous for him. But that was sweet.

WOW!!!

Am I really seeing what I am seeing or did these teams trade jerseys?

haha. Great game so far, straight up shootout.

by Cal_IslandersFan on Nov 11, 2009 7:24 PM EST up reply actions

Sort of pinching myself here. When Semin scores 10 seconds in, I’m obviously not expecting what happened next.

WSH has been leaving the points completely open all game. The Islanders defenseman have gotten some great shots on net so far.

Their forwards don’t seem fully ready for two-way combat tonight … yet.

by ogam5 on Nov 11, 2009 7:28 PM EST reply actions

Wonder how pissed Theodore is to be sitting

Pulled so quickly. Hardly an unexpected coaching move, but it’s not like those goals were his fault. I think I’d rather stick it out than have a line of 3 GA, 2 saves, 7 minutes.

Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.

The Isles have chased a couple of fine goalies out of the net so far this season huh?

Lets go Islanders...

We are all about giving lots of goalies work.

Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. He was hung out to dry during his 7 mins of play tonight.

Still, with Varylemov taking over for the playoffs last year, Thedore has to know he’s on thin ice.

by Mark D on Nov 11, 2009 7:37 PM EST up reply actions

And now Varly has made some nice saves in his, heh, 13 minutes.

Apparently, you cannot stop the Fleisch

…particularly if Backstrom sets it up like that.

That almost felt inevitable. Looked bad leading up to the penalty, looked chaotic on the PK.

Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.

by Dominik on Nov 11, 2009 7:38 PM EST reply actions

End of 1st: 3-2

Well then. That was something. Now it’s a new, 40-minute game, we have a one-goal head start, and they’ve got a sharper goalie in. Good luck boys, hope the flu bug isn’t about to hit anybody mid-game, ’cause you need all the fuel you can muster.

Forbes Most Valuable

Hey, we moved up in the Most Valuable Hockey Franchises. With the Isles only dropping 3% in value, and the Thrashers dropping 10%, we are now more valuable then the Thrashers AND the Coyotes.

Penalty already

Not sure I get it, either. Wash/Comcast feed is focused more on some Redskins tight end than actually showing the call. And the blip I saw, it just looked like Jackman (interference) met his man at the boards as the puck got there. Must’ve been more.

3-3: Semin

Another penalty, this time on Bailey, and this time despite a strong start the PK can’t finish it off.

Great setup behind the net from Green, and Semin rifles it. Kind of interesting to see him be more prominent without Ovechkin in there.

Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.

by Dominik on Nov 11, 2009 8:17 PM EST reply actions

Too many penalties, you can only ask so much of the PK against the Caps of all teams.

by Mark D on Nov 11, 2009 8:18 PM EST up reply actions

Yep. Bailey’s was a little unlucky. One of those where his blade happened to hit the ice right where the guy was pushing off, and he wiped out.

Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.

by Dominik on Nov 11, 2009 8:20 PM EST up reply actions

Bailey did stop a goal right before that though gotta give him credit for that.

Lets go Islanders...

by TheMetalChick on Nov 11, 2009 8:23 PM EST up reply actions

Ooh, yyeah. That was awesome. And he didn’t just stop it, he cleared it all the way out and no icing to boot.

Tambellini has gone back to shooting from outside

Not a good sign. I suppose he could just be trying to use traffic for a screen, but that’s what his last few games have looked like to me.

Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.

by Dominik on Nov 11, 2009 8:26 PM EST reply actions

That was excellent! Semin could’ve eaten ’em up there, and he stayed with his move. I thought he was picking a corner for sure.

Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.

Yeah, I thought Semin was going to roof a goal right there.

by Cal_IslandersFan on Nov 11, 2009 8:33 PM EST up reply actions

Bah, 4-3

And Fehr has actually scored, thanks to a bounce off HIllen’s skate.

Tavares, meanwhile, has looked very pedestrian tonight.

Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.

by Dominik on Nov 11, 2009 8:36 PM EST reply actions

The look on Hillen’s face, he knew that went off of him.

Bailey’s been pretty good all night.

Well, it's not for lack of effort

just to passive on the puck carrier in the NZ.

by Chickendirt on Nov 11, 2009 8:38 PM EST reply actions

I might be biased, but I think they are missing Okposo, he’s such a spark plug and makes a lot of those plays forechecking in the offensive zone.

by Mark D on Nov 11, 2009 8:42 PM EST up reply actions

The top line in particular. Tavares not getting a lot of space out there.

It’s rough when Hillen led your most exciting rush of the period. I mean — I like HIllen and that’s what he’s good at, but he was the only one to enter their zone with speed.

Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.

The Caps got two early PPs, they tied it, they took the lead. I’d like that period back.

Then: Hillen, with Hunter/Bailey/Tambellini
