Blasted Swine: Kyle Okposo has H1N1 flu

Yesterday he was getting time on defense in practice (just for numbers with Mark Streit having the day off, honest). Today Kyle Okposo has been diagnosed with the H1N1 "swine" flu. Coincidence?

Damn pigs. Okposo follows teammate Doug Weight, who had it in mid-October. That's a fine how-do-you-do for the start of a seven-game road swing. I guess the Isles don't have to worry about who sits for the returning-to-health Trent Hunter anymore.

We can talk about the need for better public health policies, and we can talk about washing hands and the what-not. But when #21 gets the swine flu and messes with our Islanders hockey, well that's when it's time to get medieval.

(I'm not really sure what that last sentence means. It just felt right. And it's fun when The People gloss over real issues until it messes with important things like TV. Almost as fun as general panic in the populace.)

I've had the flu for about five days

It’s nasty this year. Don’t know what strain I have alls I know is that whatever liquids I take in I sweat out in a few hours. The more fluid depleted you become the worse you feel. Hard to balance out the rest you need with the intake of fluids.

The flu bug this year is a nasty and deceptive little shit.

Yikes

That sucks man, just sucks. I have a notoriously pitiful immune system, and I’m pretty sure without the flu shot and modern medicine I wouldn’t have made it past age 18. So I’m really not looking forward to getting what comes around this year, because I will fold like a baby.

I probably SHOULD get the shot...

but thanks to Immigration Canada, I am not yet in the system up here. Shame about Kyle. Any word on how long he will be out of action? Maybe with him out, others will step up their games.

I almost hate to say this but I’ll take swine over a Dion hit. So he sits a couple of games…

I can honestly say that I am ok with that given that Gordon gets to manipulate some lines now. Perhaps Schremp gets to show if he is going to do anything for the team. Perhaps we get a chance to see Tambi and Schremp on the same line.

I'll see your starting goalie and raise you a Biron.

Schremp

Give me Schremp or give me death. I am begging gordon to get Robbie out there and give him some significant minutes… pair him with Tavares and magic will ensue I gaurentee

I sort of envy your optimism for Rob Schremp Hockey™. Funny though, with Hunter coming back, Rob’s gonna need another injury or virus to get himself in the lineup.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
