Meet Godzilla

Star-divide

The following is from the November 1 NY Times "Slap Shot" column:

nothing scarier that what’s happening on Long Island. Three games ago the Islanders were doormats with one regulation win to their credit. But then they beat the Rangers, got two points off the Capitals — and on Saturday night they obliterated Buffalo as if the Sabres were one of those scale-model Tokyos in an old monster movie. Something humungous may be awakening in the trackless depths off the East Coast, a Godzilla in blue and orange.

Game 11: Islanders vs. Sabres

That's pretty funny

Overall I think this team will suffer it’s fair share of 4-5 game losing streaks. It will also have some of it’s fair share of 3-4 game winning streaks. At the end of the season I figure they finish a little under or above the five hundred mark.

Hard to say...

I thought that this team would be hard to read before the season started. If you can get the second line going, the defense is OK, and the goaltending is good, they should be competitive. This is especially the case in that you have last year playoff teams like Boston, Carolina, and Montreal struggling, other teams like Philly and the Rangers very vulnerable and others like Pitt and NJ suffering from injuries, it may be more open for ateam like the Isles to make some noise. We still need at least one more good draft though and since this one has most of the talent in the first and second rounds, we need to get early picks. Deadline time should be interesting.

That's a hilarious bit

(Does that Godzilla have a “I heart Tavares” tattoo on his shoulder?)

But holy over-reaction, Batman.

This is a nice run. I’ll gladly ride it. But yeah, it doesn’t change that the team is still too thin and will have its share of win and loss streaks — some moments of pure joy and moments of questioning whether [Player X] will ever be a consistent NHL player. Much work to be done.

Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.

Actually, I think its Sparky on roids!!!

As I say, I don’t know what this team is or what it can do…especially against weakened Eastern Conference opposition. The only teams in this conference that really scare me are the Pens, the Caps, and the Sabres and we just beat two of them—one convincingly.

I think if this team starts to come together as it seems to be doing, doesn’t suffer from injuries as it has in the past seasons, and gets consistent goaltending, it can make some noise. The problem with that is that we need another good draft as well as trades and FA. We will see.

I see this team rolling into the deadline...

with 55-65 points. For me, the question then becomes do you trade older players for younger ones (ie Martinek for Weber) or for draft picks? If DP is healthy and he and Mikko are playing well, do you move Roly for a high pick? Or a nice player?

It probably depends on whether we are closer to 55 or 65. I am guessing that we will be closer to 55, Garth pulls the plug, rests more skilled people when there is a hint of injury, brings up the Joensuus and Figrens to give them a shot, and hopefully grabs another first rounder somehow. Then maybe we do grab the #1 overall again and maybe this time we convert it into perhaps Anaheim’s two first round picks, a second and a position player (Sbisa?). That would give us three first rounders and two or more early second rounders in this front loaded draft. Could be adding 7 quality players to the mix (including Sbisa). That plus summer wheeling and dealing should give us a good core.
