Islanders visit Senators [game thread]

New York Islanders at Ottawa Senators, Oct 8, 2009 7:00 PM EDT

Enemy discussion: Silver Seven Sens

I've been under the weather all week, but I hope to be up to watch this one live and toss quips around with anyone who's around in the game thread. If, however, my hot toddy leaves me comatose beyond the opening faceoff, they're good people over at Silver Seven Sens. (Standard guest etiquette applies.)

Oh yeah: I failed to mentioned earlier that this is Ottawa's home opener, so I imagine the start will be delayed by your usual pomp and ceremony. No truth to the rumo(u)r they're retiring Dan(n)y Heatley's number though.

1-0 Sens

Well, that sucks.

Great pokecheck from Biron on the Spezza breakaway. Fast forward a few minutes, and a Sens shot goes off the mesh above the glass, guys slow down (play to the whistle!!) and the Senators get a goal.

Tough turnaround from the pressure they were applying in the first seven minutes or so.

Hey, Slam

Heehee, work in progress. The line of Moulson-Tavares-Okposo looks sweet.

Tonight, they put on good pressure for the first seven minutes, then got a bit of a hard-luck goal, and now the game has leveled off quite a bit. Balance shifted to Ottawa.

Funny enough, I was screaming for us to grab Gerber off of waivers last season. He was going to be a UFA anyway so it was really nothing to gain, nothing to lose for us. But considering by then we were using Dmen in OT Shootouts I think we were trying to get to the bottom as fast as possible.

I follow the Canucks, supposedly he’s their emergency backup and they have a youngster whose on their AHL team that is the real backup.

by Mark D on Oct 8, 2009 8:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Cory Schneider

Kid is the real deal, imo. I have no idea what they’re going to do with two very talented goalies like that. I just don’t see what the Canucks accomplished by bringing in a guy who just wasn’t any good last year. You know you’re getting barely mediocre with him, so what’s the point? Maybe I’m just missing something.

I thought you knew that algebra was all razzamatazz. A Globetrotter always saves the good algebra for the final minutes.

by A.J. Haefele on Oct 8, 2009 8:10 PM EDT up reply actions

They know that as long as Luongo is healthy their backup isn’t going to get much time. So they are giving Schneider another year or so in the AHL, letting Raycroft be the backup for 10-15 games and if Luongo goes down again for an extended period they’ll call up Schneider. No reason to have Schneider sitting all season behind Luongo when he can get playing time.

I’m excited just because the team played hard in two games, which I believe matched last season’s total. The hardest part of last year wasn’t the losing, but the feeling that 1/3 of the team just didn’t care. I’m fine with the Avs being mediocre or worse as long as they play hard. Also, this season is already a success because I made it to my first Avs home game in over ten years (I finally moved back to CO) and it was the epic Joe Sakic Night. Everything from here on out is just gravy.

Also, Duchene is awesome. Thanks for not taking him <3

BIRON

Oh my god that was monster.

BIRON!

Huge save. Sweet feed cross the way from Spezza to Kovalev.

Actually, Kovalev put it across the body into his glove. It might’ve even gone wide. But it was cool.

Feeling Good

Last game we came out and took a 3-1 lead, we couldn’t hold it, but 1 point is better then none.

This game we were down 2-0 and came back. I think last season we rarely came back from being down 2 at any point in the game.

Absolutely. (Assuming we hang on.) Different look now. Having real goalies helps.

I can't even describe what's going on

This is back-and-forth craziness. Must. Catch. Breath.

He has. It’s odd to see him play effectively without doing something stupid. If only he could hit with his shoulder.

Bring on the firewagon hockey.

meh

It really needs to be fixed. Either just have the OT Period, or just have the shootout. This both system is a mess.

by Mark D on Oct 8, 2009 9:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed.

I also hate the loser point. I think it should just be OT and go home. I do really enjoy the 4 on 4, though.

The loser point is the worst

If they want OT and shootout, they should go to a 3-point system. Make every game worth the same. Make a regulation win 3 pts.

OT beckons

Gordon called a timeout with half a minute (or less?) left, before a defensive zone faceoff. Make sure the young troops know what to do.

Not a bad show so far. Two points on the season, time for a bonus round.

Was fun, guys.

I’ll try to drop in some more this season. For now, off to watch my own team for a bit.

One disheartening note...

apart from two losses. Computing in my head, the GF and GA averages are about identical to last year’s totals:
2.5 GF, 3.5 GA.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
