Islanders-Sabres [Halloween game thread]
Buffalo Sabres at New York Islanders, Oct 31, 2009 7:00 PM EDT
Knock-knock.
"Who's there?"
Orange.
"Orange who?"
Orange you glad man discovered hockey?
(Sorry about that.) I'm supposed to be at a costume party -- at the time I prepared this post, it was a toss up between dressing as Cher or as Rodney Dangerfield's character from Caddyshack (I'm telling you, sometimes being the son of a Czech -- with access to his old wardrobe -- comes in handy).
So I won't be here for the whole game, and maybe for none of it. I suspect many of you might be in the same boat. But if you're here, have at it, and I'll try to catch up tomorrow. Extra credit if you tell me what I missed.

Two in a row
Let’s hope they keep the momentum going into tonight. I’ll be around here for the whole game, hopefully some other show up too.

I'll be here
Screw Halloween!!!!
I want my Islanders!!!
Besides, what can be scarier than watching our inept defense.
Nice. Looking forward to the game. Seems like we had a pretty good group here for the game last night.
Looking forward to see Biron in goal.

Present!
For a little while at least, for sure.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Flu boys
Gaustad and Kaleta out with “undisclosed illness.” Hope they kissed a few teammates before they saw them off.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Seems like
a good night for Biron’s 200th career win

Yessir. Man, he’s been around a while. Wonder what happened to Mikka Noronen? Seems like Buffalo had a logjam for a while in goal.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Hmm, good question about Mika. Haven’t heard that name for awhile. Looks like he’s playing in Europe now, and for the past few years.

Gotta be one of the toughest positions in sports to secure a job. Just 60 openings, half of which won’t give you many appearances, hard to get a chance to find your groove.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Dam, had I thought ahead, perfect Night to be at an Islanders game as the scariest thing possible… Mike Milbury.
That might win the award — if you weren’t drawn and quartered first.
Does he do Bruins road games, or just home? I wonder what kind of treatment he gets if (when) he returns to the Coliseum.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
I think for road games, he’s in the studio…not 100% positive though.

That sounds right. I think I’ve seen that.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Does he do work for Fox Sports NE? All I knew is that he worked for NBC, and they’d never cover an Isles game.
I think it’s NESN. The Bruins go to him and a couple others in between periods, while they’re refilling Jack Edwards’ oxygen.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Jack Edwards has to be one of the most annoying to listen to in all of sports
I can’t bear one second of listening to him. Makes Chinese water torture seem appealing.
Used to like ol' Jack.....
…..until he inevitably caught ’Cusick’s Homeritis’ from Brickley (pathology: inflammation of Bruin’s injustices caused by the referees – paging Dr. House! Dr. House! No cure, unfortunately…..) now, he’s more or less a bargain-basement Marv Albert…..BTW, when exactly DID ‘delay-of-game’ become ‘puck over glass’? A most useless penalty…..
Way back, with soccer, I found him fine — it was nice to have an announcer with enthusiasm for the sport instead of “boss made me do soccer” approach. Then he just became … yeah, unbearable.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Too many men
And a nice close-up lip-read shot of Gordon saying, “Fuck me.”
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
To beat Miller,
You must first shoot at him. Shots 8-0 Sabres so far…
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Figured I'd mention this here
Hamonic with another point for 21 pts in 16 games.
Also made the Canadian junior team for the Summit series.
Nice. De Haan’s on the Summit team too, isn’t he?
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Don't know
Didn’t see his name in the article I read last night.
Here it is. He’s on. I thought I’d seen it somewhere.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Hmm, nobody looks alive yet
Except Biron.
Sweet pass by Nielsen though.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Good point. Biron is keeping them in the game.

Like Jackman trying to get something going
Rivet had his turbo reverse boosters going, though.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Oh, Martinek!
Sweet save. Missed his penalty though.

You gotta play physical against Buffalo
You play the puck these guys are gonna thrive.
You have to aggressive and physical against these guys.
Attendance
Almost all the weekend games at home have been pretty empty, except for the game against Washington.
What a give up by the Buffalo defender.

That was ugly. The heralded Myers — people were saying he had a bad night last night, too. He just got past the point where they’re keeping him up, too, so I wonder if he relaxed too much.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
PARK!
Strips the rookie, and gets off the schneid. Wicked shot.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Hell of a shot. Glad for Park that he finally got his 1st.

Heh, serious quality. I love the contrast between what shot it takes to score burning down the wing today, versus the ’80s, when there was gaping daylight on each side.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Park's interview
Was pretty good. One of the most thoughtful intermission interviews I’ve ever seen, actually. Just talked hockey, almost started waxing philosophical. Teaching these kids to establish an identity … sometimes you play flat and still come out with the lead.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Incredible! They are ahead after the 1st! I did not see this coming! There really is something great going on with this team as of late isn’t there?!

Dumb Poll
MSG has a poll, who is your favorite player to play for the Isles and Sabres in the last ten years. Of course they only say ten years because otherwise you’d have to Include Lafontaine, and I think Lafontaine would win that poll with 90%
No doubt. They could have used it as a spot to promote LaFontaine in the marathon, too.
Who were the candidates? Peca, Pyatt, Biron, Connolly … Roloson? Heh, Dawes?
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Jackman v. Montador
Pretty good scrap
I’m starting to like Jackman more and more every game.

I can’t complain. He’s not a great fighter and not a great defensive forward, but he busts his tail and does whatever’s asked. You need a guy or two like that, particularly when they’re only going to get 9-10 minutes a night.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Yeah, the hard work that he brings is what I like most.

The Other JT!
Woot! Through the legs — his own legs.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Nice, cool goal.
Good night to learn how to play with/keep a lead.

AND AGAIN!!!!!
Holy…Sweet work by Weight/Bailey/Tamby.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Too bad I got myself kicked off of Hockeybuzz. Last season I was the only one willing to stick with Tambellini and let him work it out.
He’s really coming into his own and I’ve earned some bragging rights for the shit I’ve taken.
Ha! Yeah, you deserve a fly-by to collect. Need to send an emissary in your stead.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
LOL
Paybacks are bitch for the one paying it back.
Frans
Squeaked away from Montador like a mouse. Love it.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Yep......
……freaky things are happening all around, and it’s definitely Hallowe’en at the Coliseum; Tamby gets yanked for a sketchy slash and then promptly nets his 4th…..not that I’m COMPLAININ’ or anything!
Bring in Lalime
LOL. Don’t know why. Not Miller’s fault. Unless they’re throwing in the towel.
Keep pressing boys, keep pressing.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Their schedule is ridiculous. We’ll be like four games played up on them.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Good thing Bailey took care of that insecurity!
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Bow my head
I can’t express how awesome it is to watch a team in this shade of blue-and-orange absolutely kick ass. Puts a pretty bow on it, it does.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
We're in for a good year
Not a playoff year.
But a good year.
This weekend could be huge. They might feel like they’ve broken through, so they’ll be holding this as a standard instead of the rebuild excuse.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
I don't think it changes much expectation wise
I think come the stretch this team going to really struggle. Have too many guys who haven’t experienced that kind of hockey. Will be nice to play some meaningful games in February. March and possibly Arpil.
I think this was a decent team last year that struggled with injuries and had no goaltending. If this team stays healthy, and if Biron and Rollie can do what we know they can do, I want to believe they can challenge for the Playoffs.
Trent Hunters still out, and there’s always the possibility that DiPietro returns and has his old form.
I just mean that I wanted them to have some kind of stretch like this early, so that they don’t descend into despair from not even having strung a few wins together.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
This is just TOO cool.....
- but had I known that this way the way it would go tonight, I’d be in Uniondale at this very minute for my birthday – and what a present it might be!
Oh yeah I remember you wished for this earliar. Look at that 4-0 on the way to doing it. I hope they pull it off for you.

Not an everyday thing, eh? This is nice.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Well since i expect them to lose every game
I’m shocked when they are winning and winning 4-0 nonetheless

OMG! 4-0????!! Holy Awesomeness! What kind of 2nd period did they have?!? I’m not able to watch right now. This is awesome!!!!
by LI2Brnx on Oct 31, 2009 8:39 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
Basically: “You’re sick. We’re not. Biron saved us in the first. Now we bring the hurt.”
Tambellini twice, Bailey once — the Weight/Bailey/Tamby line looked the best it’s looked all year.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Oh Tamby Tambs! How I love him so. That’s awesome.
by LI2Brnx on Oct 31, 2009 8:42 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Ummmmm......
- do ya ’spose NHL.com jinxed Miller by saying he was the de facto goalie for the US Olympic Team?
I must depart......
…..headed out to meet one of my best friends for some karaoke first and (don’t laugh) ‘Disco bowling’ second – I’ll be keeping an eye on the ESPN crawl if FOX isn’t on in the bar…..also, any bets as to whether the Buffaslug will be exterminated in 2010-11 by Golisano? Can’t imagine that the fans up there don’t want the ol’ buffalo and crossed sabers back any less than we want the royal blues returned to regular duty……
Haha, cheers, have a great time and great b-day.
On the Buffaslug: It sounds and looks like they’ve already made that decision. Lots of hints that way, and their official site really downplays the slug motif.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Good question. And nope. Gaborik’s leg on an off-day would still get more attention than a Tamby hat trick. :crosses fingers:
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
I bet the Standard Story and attention for the Isles won’t change until something is settled on the Lighthouse Project. Then suddenly there will be a flood of “and the team is on the way up, too” bits.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
A little firewagony. I’ll endorse it if they get Tamby a hat trick.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
hey boys can someone hook me up with a feed
not good w computer stuff thanx Mafia
Yes, he’s apparently too good for hits.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
HAT TRICK TAMBY!
Woot!
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
I sooo want to collect right now
LOL!!!!!!
And they are chanting Tambellini's name
Never thought I’d see the day.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Ugh
Don’t need a Weight injury in garbage time.
…alright! He’s taken his penalty shot.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Absolutely
That’s the story right there. Biron kept ‘em in, Park’s shot gave ’em a chance, and then they took off. Awesome.
I like worrying about the first more than worrying about the third.
