Around SBN: Ellenberger vs. Sanchez Heats Up, Hughes Talks Retirement

Brophy (at Sportsnet) sounds a bit high on the team so far:

"The funny thing about the Islanders is, with a little luck, they could be riding the same wave that has carried the upstart Colorado Avalanche to the very top of the standings."

The Islanders have had some tough opponents. They've had some close games. But this sounds a bit like happy talk. They're an undermanned work in progress, plain and simple.

One more quibble: There was nothing "ironic" about Tavares scoring the shootout winner. Nothing at all.

Good read

His logic is there, in terms of the OTL’s, but I doubt he’s seen as much Islanders hockey as we all have.

The thing that kills me is the late leads that the Isles have given up, subsequently losing possible points in the standings. Playing with a lead is a tough thing to do, and without a doubt this club needs to learn how it to it better.

7 points thru the first 10 games is right about where I thought they’d be, looking at the season before it started. Playing a full 60 mins, and playing with the lead are definite keys to the game, and clearly the Islanders need to improve in these aspects. The good thing is, these aspects of the game can be improved with time.

they need Hall and maybe Teemu too

and they need more talent on D. A good second round pick would be Patrik Nemeth, a big, tough, nasty, physical defender from the SEL.

Agreed. Actually the article itself was pretty fair — it was sold to me based on the “with a little bit of luck … Islanders = Colorado” angle, which, having seen the games, I think is a stretch.

But the rest of his rundown is pretty realistic.

Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.

Part of the difference...

is Ryan O’Reilly (see my FanShot). A #33 overall makes the team AND has 11 points this early in the season? I wonder how many of those OT and SO losses would have been regulation wins if we had him anchoring the 4th line instead of Thompson? If we’d kept back just one of the picks we used to get De Haan and used our #31 for O’ Reilly and the other for Koskinnen, we might have 5-6 more points now.

Finally, I’ve been saying the same thing. The two worst losses of the season were the Boston game and the Montreal game. The Boston game was a bad game from Rollie, and the Montreal game was just an off night for everyone. We easily could have gotten a few more ties with the amount of 1 goal games we’ve had. And when you get into OT you never know what could happen.

Oh yea, last 5 games, 2-1-2
