Mike Richards' Hit on David Booth

(HD) Mike Richards Knocks Out David Booth 10-24-2009 (via GhostWalker40)

Star-divide

It appears as if the NHL has decided that a return to a more brutal era in hockey will be just the thing for ratings. In fact, they seem perfectly willing to tolerate headhunting such as the hit Dion Phaneuf put on Kyle Okposo in a pre-season game.

The latest example is a hit made by Philadelphia Flyers' center and captain Mike Richards on Florida Panthers forward David Booth (see video above). Richards' blindsides Booth and catches him in the jaw with his shoulder. Booth was unconcious, so a concussion was at least part of his injuries.

Richards was given a five minute penalty and a game misconduct, but the NHL has decided that no further penalty is indicated. What do you think? Will it take something like this happening to a Crosby or an Ovechkin before the NHL changes?

Tough one

On the video in this post, I couldn’t tell. Looked like he just drove through him, and it was surprising Booth didn’t see him coming.

Hunting around for a few other angles, though, from the rear it looks like Richards drives up toward his head — which is something that needs to stop. It’s called a bodycheck, not a headshot, and one of these days perhaps the “union” of players will teach themselves the difference. Or they’ll keep giving each other concussions at high speeds.

Not a bit surprised the NHL won’t suspend, though. There is a star caste system at work for all disciplinary decisions, and Richards is in the lucky caste. Since the Campbell Circus has never bothered to explicitly define the criteria for a suspension, we’re better off guessing based on: 1) Player identity, 2) Victim identity, 3) Degree of injury.

According to what I read...

Booth saw him at the very last instant but it was too late. Richards claims that he hadn’t meant to hit Booth in the jaw and that he saw too late that he would hit him in the jaw. Sexton (FL GM?) stated that the Cats would have to reevaluate personnel—which I interpreted to mean that he would be getting more physical and nasty players.

Like Dom said,

I’ve got to try and find some more angles of the hit. Just from this though, I would say that it was a clean hit, with Booth skating with his head down.

Dom’s 2nd paragraph summarizes it all up well though, actually spot-on.

The controversial hits just keep coming. Going from too high to too low: Rob Scuderi hipchecks Jason Chimera

The part that really gets me is that Chimera was assessed a game misconduct because he was so upset about it.

Wow, that was low. And Chimera got thrown out?! Unbelievable.

Scuderi out-Otted Ott! I miss hip checks, but at what point does a hip check become a knee submarine? I think Scuderi found that point.

Death to the FLYERS

No one on the Flyers should ever get the benfit of the doubt.
As long as Paul Holmgren is running the show, they will be the scourge of the NHL, as that is the only way he knows how to play it. Richards and his cronies are doomed to be tortured by the Penguins. Scott Hartnell get a Haircut you Hippie. I can’t wait till the Isles destroy the evil Flyers. May they never win another game.

I'm OK with that

I have a hunch they will not be a playoff team.

they'll be on the bubble and...

might or might not make it. If they do, one and done. Same for the Rangers.
