Islanders-Capitals [game thread]

Washington Capitals at New York Islanders, Oct 24, 2009 7:00 PM EDT

Caps-pital_medium                    Blade-square_medium
Washington Capitals (5-2-2, 1st/SE) at New York Islanders (1-4-3, 5th/Atl)
7 p.m. EDT | Nassau [gloriously unsponsored] Veterans Mem. Coliseum | MSG+, radio

If you didn't catch the update in the preview or check elsewhere: Doug Weight still out, joined by Rob Schremp Hockey and Freddy Meyer The Fourth. Jon Sim and Bruno Gervais back in. (If any of this has changed, to let others know in comments.)

Frans Nielsen has to center Sean Bergenheim and Sim. The point-per-game first line is re-united. Cancel out the first lines and ... the Capitals are just a tad bit better.

As of pre-scheduling this thread, I'm not sure if/how much I'll be back to catch live. Either way, I'm looking forward to your reactions in the game thread -- which, depending on the score, I may have to peek at through the tiny gaps between my fingers.

I'm feeling

Win #2 tonight…Let’s go Isles.

by Cal_IslandersFan on Oct 24, 2009 6:55 PM EDT reply actions

Is everyone at the game?

If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...

by Rob Parker on Oct 24, 2009 7:05 PM EDT reply actions

Nope, and I’m happy cause I’m finally watching a MSG+ feed.

Its usually slow till midway through the first.

by Mark D on Oct 24, 2009 7:09 PM EDT up reply actions

I have a feeeling...

it will be a low turnout on here tonight…just a feeling though, hopefully I’m wrong.

by Cal_IslandersFan on Oct 24, 2009 7:12 PM EDT reply actions

Better Crowd

The crowd looks much bigger then Wensdays game or last saturdays game. I think its most likely due to Ovie.

by Mark D on Oct 24, 2009 7:15 PM EDT reply actions

Weekend

and Ovie will bring in the masses…

by Cal_IslandersFan on Oct 24, 2009 7:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Wow

thought Bergy had a goal there…

by Cal_IslandersFan on Oct 24, 2009 7:22 PM EDT reply actions

Quick Strikes

Maybe its just me, but we don’t seem to just come into the zone and score. Or for that matter quick scores off of faceoffs. We have the chances too. I think thats one of our weaknesses, and why we have to rely so much on the PP, we can spend more time in the offensive zone.

by Mark D on Oct 24, 2009 7:24 PM EDT reply actions

Good point

we definitely don’t come into the zone and get any quick goals. The main problem with that seems to come from our continuos sub-par breakouts…

by Cal_IslandersFan on Oct 24, 2009 7:27 PM EDT up reply actions

SH Goal

Two Nights In a Row!

by Mark D on Oct 24, 2009 7:29 PM EDT reply actions

And I was just about to compliment our PK Forecheck. For the 2nd or 3rd game in a row they’ve pressured a mistake in the offensive zone from the PP

by Mark D on Oct 24, 2009 7:29 PM EDT up reply actions

This is a whole different team that is playing tonight, compared with what showed up in Montreal. Just great!

by Cal_IslandersFan on Oct 24, 2009 7:30 PM EDT up reply actions

No kidding,

I have to say I’m liking what I see so far. Definitely a more focuses, energized team than what I’ve seen this year.

by Cal_IslandersFan on Oct 24, 2009 7:35 PM EDT up reply actions

GOAL

Great shorthanded goal by Martinek….

by Cal_IslandersFan on Oct 24, 2009 7:29 PM EDT reply actions

I’m most happy that Frans and Bergie get a point, and Martinek can get some confidence. I bust on him but I don’t wish anything bad amongst our players, so if they can get in their stride, good for them. All three of those guys needed that, that was vindicating.

by albeezle on Oct 24, 2009 7:37 PM EDT reply actions

I think I liked the idea of breaking up the Moulson-Tavares-Okposo line, but I think it works out better to keep them together and let the 2nd/3rd line score on their own.

by Mark D on Oct 24, 2009 7:39 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t like the breakup either, but I guess we’ll see. More than anything, look at how hard they’re skating. Park, Sim, Okposo, etc. They’re working SO HARD, that’s irreplaceable.

by albeezle on Oct 24, 2009 7:42 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm torn

between what to do with the #1 line. Right now, I’m leaning towards just leaving them together, and just figure out a way for everyone else to score…

by Cal_IslandersFan on Oct 24, 2009 7:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Keep the #1 line together, and hope that the rest catch up.

by Mark D on Oct 24, 2009 7:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Great 1st period

Need to keep the momentum going into the 2nd. Little bit worried about Roloson seeing so few many shots in the 1st, but I’m hoping he keeps his head in the game.

Let’s come out strong and get a quick goal #2

Very pleased with the intensity that the Isles are playing with right now…

by Mark D on Oct 24, 2009 7:52 PM EDT reply actions

PP

Drops to 2-15 in the last 17. Not good considering our struggles scoring 5on5

by Mark D on Oct 24, 2009 8:02 PM EDT reply actions

Come on Ref

That was a totally legal stick poke!

by Mark D on Oct 24, 2009 8:04 PM EDT reply actions

Forecheck

If they can get this forecheck going for all 4 lines all night long for a game, they are going to be a scary team.

On the PK its not one guy who makes a half hearted attempt to distract the player bringing the puck out of his zone. They are really pushing with the first guy forward, and theres another forward not too far behind in case they get something going. Lots of good chances tonight due to the forecheck.

by Mark D on Oct 24, 2009 8:10 PM EDT reply actions

Jaffe talking about Martinek’s cander in the intermission interview. Lol, he said fiveish words.

by albeezle on Oct 24, 2009 8:13 PM EDT reply actions

Bergenheim looks like he dinged up his rib :(

by albeezle on Oct 24, 2009 8:15 PM EDT reply actions

He’s already back out, no worries.

by Mark D on Oct 24, 2009 8:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Up a goal after 1? Never experienced this before…

by zytsef on Oct 24, 2009 8:22 PM EDT reply actions

Oh Come On

Do the caps need anymore help against the Isles?

by Mark D on Oct 24, 2009 8:22 PM EDT reply actions

Green goes down easier than a whore.

by albeezle on Oct 24, 2009 8:24 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't blame Green for that

This is more of the NHLs really shitty reffing coming to light.

That was really fuckin ridiculous.

by Chickendirt on Oct 24, 2009 8:26 PM EDT up reply actions

yea, it was obvious Green was trying to dodge Thompson, and how was Thompson going to change direction halfway through a check?

by Mark D on Oct 24, 2009 8:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Yep, and the 20 second 5 on 3, and the shorthanded goal.

by Mark D on Oct 24, 2009 8:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, somehow forgot that was a shorty.

Isles just need to chip in another goal here…

by Cal_IslandersFan on Oct 24, 2009 8:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Good D thus far in this game

This should turn things around for awhile.

Need a big goal here from Okposo or Tavares.

by Chickendirt on Oct 24, 2009 8:26 PM EDT reply actions

Definitely, you can sense the Isles have the momentum

by Mark D on Oct 24, 2009 8:27 PM EDT up reply actions

God I love Bergenheim. And that might not have been a goal, but that was an excellent setup 1-2-3.

by albeezle on Oct 24, 2009 8:30 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't know about that

The fundamentals are a little better.

by Chickendirt on Oct 24, 2009 8:30 PM EDT up reply actions

oh, I just meant it would be a good time to build on the momentum with a goal.

Streit Gervais Martinek and Hillen are doing great on D tonight.

by Mark D on Oct 24, 2009 8:31 PM EDT up reply actions

D is looking great tonight, tremendous turn around from the Montreal game.

by Cal_IslandersFan on Oct 24, 2009 8:32 PM EDT up reply actions

I think they might have figured out they don’t need to generate offense. Let the forwards worry about that and if you have an open opportunity, take it, but let the play come to you. Don’t rush it.

by albeezle on Oct 24, 2009 8:33 PM EDT up reply actions

I see

They definitly have something to build on.

by Chickendirt on Oct 24, 2009 8:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Great first two periods,

I’m hoping we don’t allow for a 3rd period comeback for the Caps, which has been all to familiar this season.

by Cal_IslandersFan on Oct 24, 2009 8:35 PM EDT reply actions

Outshot 10-4 in that period, but the caps had the almost 4 minutes straight of PP time. Plus I think we had a lot more quality chances.

Faceoffs right now at 23-11. We seem to be winning a majority of faceoffs this season.

by Mark D on Oct 24, 2009 8:37 PM EDT reply actions

Ovie so far only 1 SOG a negative 1 and 2 PIM.

actually....

the only thing I ever said was that Tambellini should be given a shot over Schremp.

I swear insurance goals never seem to last long…

by Mark D on Oct 24, 2009 9:06 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah

Isles really need to keep the Caps off the scoreboard now.

by Cal_IslandersFan on Oct 24, 2009 9:07 PM EDT up reply actions

The passing looks pretty good tonight, nothing to scoff at there.

by albeezle on Oct 24, 2009 9:12 PM EDT reply actions

Passing and breakouts look much better tonight.

by Cal_IslandersFan on Oct 24, 2009 9:13 PM EDT up reply actions

WHAT A ONE TIMER! So close, nice save by Theodore.

by albeezle on Oct 24, 2009 9:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Wow

didn’t realize that going into tonight, Sim has 12 goals in 24 career games against Washington.

by Cal_IslandersFan on Oct 24, 2009 9:12 PM EDT reply actions

Why are these refs being such sissies tonight?

by albeezle on Oct 24, 2009 9:17 PM EDT reply actions

It’s the NHL? Flip a coin. Heads is call ridiculous non-penalties, tails is let them play and don’t bother with obvious calls.

by zytsef on Oct 24, 2009 9:22 PM EDT up reply actions

right off Bailey’s skate. Damn.

by Cal_IslandersFan on Oct 24, 2009 9:21 PM EDT up reply actions

They need to start working on defense around the net. Thats the 2nd goal off an Islander in 2-3 games.

by Mark D on Oct 24, 2009 9:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Paying too much attention to Ovie, but can’t blame them for that.

by Mark D on Oct 24, 2009 9:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, you’re right. Crunch time now.

by Cal_IslandersFan on Oct 24, 2009 9:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Rangers - Habs

Just to feel better about the other night, The Rangers who are leading the East have let in 4 goals by the Habs.

by Mark D on Oct 24, 2009 9:30 PM EDT reply actions

actually, no...

Pens lead them in the standings

by BCISLEMAN on Oct 25, 2009 6:23 AM EDT up reply actions

Stopping the Forecheck

Hey, maybe its just me, but it seems like the Caps have made a change. Instead of carrying the puck out of the defensive zone, they are just blasting it out so they don’t have to deal with the Isles fore check.

by Mark D on Oct 24, 2009 9:33 PM EDT reply actions

I noticed that too. The Isles were all over them in the 1st…

by Cal_IslandersFan on Oct 24, 2009 9:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Wow

At least the Isles got at least a point out of tonight, tough letdown though. Final 2 mins had me sweating.

by Cal_IslandersFan on Oct 24, 2009 9:33 PM EDT reply actions

Where was the hooking on thompson? Or does he have to fall and break his nose first? jeese.

by albeezle on Oct 24, 2009 9:33 PM EDT reply actions

He might have still been hurting, he took a beating the last few minutes of Reg

by Mark D on Oct 24, 2009 9:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Roloson

played a pretty solid game tonight. Personally, I like Biron better, but by no means did Roloson lose them the game tonight.

by Cal_IslandersFan on Oct 24, 2009 9:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I’d actually like to see Roloson get the next start against Montreal…

by Cal_IslandersFan on Oct 24, 2009 9:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Same, mostly cause of how bad Biron looked against Montreal.

by Mark D on Oct 24, 2009 9:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Tough loss

I really liked the way the Islanders came out in the beginning, and got the 2-0 lead. Underlying theme throughout the season has been that they can’t keep a lead.

Tough letdown at the end, glad that at least they got a point. Glad that there were a lot more improvements over the Montreal game.

by Cal_IslandersFan on Oct 24, 2009 9:39 PM EDT reply actions

This how things get turned around

It’s frustrating when you watch it but you really have to look at the little things. Some of these guys with a little more experience start burying more of these chances.

If anything Washington is lucky they didn’t lose this 8-3. Isles got a lot of opportunities offensivly but it’s just not there yet.

They’ll learn to hold these leads eventually. Just got beat by a more wiser and experienced team. The worm is gonna turn. Just a matter of time.

by Chickendirt on Oct 24, 2009 9:43 PM EDT reply actions

Its not even holding the leads, its getting the insurance goals and getting 3-4 goals ahead. Lots of missed chances tonight.

by Mark D on Oct 24, 2009 9:47 PM EDT up reply actions

That too

Little poise in front of the net goes a longs ways. Too many times they look to get rid of the puck too quickly.

They’ll get it.

by Chickendirt on Oct 24, 2009 9:57 PM EDT up reply actions

The Good
PK went 4 for 4 and another shortie
The Defense made up for the other night
Faceoffs were won 41-18
Scoring came from the other lines

The Bad
The PP was 0 for 2 and is 2 for their last 16
Another goal banked off an Isle in the crease
Teams might be looking to stop Tavares
Lots of missed chances

And if the Hurricanes lose tonight, the Islanders will be tied for 12th in the conference. Otherwise they are definitely taking 13th from the Panthers. Babysteps!

by Mark D on Oct 24, 2009 9:47 PM EDT reply actions

He might...

but given that Hall seems the concensus choice AND was Josh’s linemate, don’t think anyone will be buying.
