Around SBN: Knicks 90, Raptors 87: "Shump and Lin wouldn't let us lose."

Hermann's article followed my own thinking. The Isles need veteran leadership. Weight will likely be gone at deadline and he is not a real productive force. Can Mark Streit fill that role? Do the Islanders need a Mark Messier? Who would that be? If the Isles draft Taylor Hall I am thinking they should try to sign Nick Boynton or another tough talented defender. What about a forward? Any thoughts/

Good post

Maybe it’s me, but I just don’t see Streit filling that role. Boynton seems like he could be a good fit for the team, and greatly improve the defense.

Just throwing out names here, but what about a guy like Brendan Morrison or Mike Grier? Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe they are both working on one year contracts, and it’s not like either of them would break the bank.

Forsberg is a name that kept popping into my head...

dunno if Foppa has anything left in the tank or if he’d cross the pond to play for us. Probably not. So between trades and FA, we should get one talented 25-30 yo forward and one defender the same. That should do it.

I’d definitely appreciate another veteran presence. The problem is it has to be one who can still be effective. The Hernandez analogy was a solid one, though.

Forsberg is intent to play with a contender if anything; Grier I would love, but I’m not sure how much of the ra-ra leadership he’d bring, and he already fits well in Buffalo; I haven’t checked on Morrison this year, but he strikes me as a little quiet and (last year at least) a little washed up. Boynton is nice — though he’s had his own lead-by-example issues.

The article got me returning to the well for candidates, but the good ones are locked up. Honestly, this is why I was pleased the Isles signed Guerin and named him captain right away — to bring in a vet leader while giving the room a restart from the Yashin experience.

We may have to trade for the right guy although...

if a certain player were to see our young talent make strides and then draft a Hall or Fowler…and either ToH comes through or Wang gets things going in Queens, who knows? See my new post “What We Need to Win” for more insights.

Saku Koivu

If we can get him, he would be the best. And if we draft Teemu P. and have Mikko in net and bring up Niemi, we will really have the Finnish thing going on!!!

I would even go so far as to...

trade a draft pick to Anaheim after the season to get his rights for negotiations.

wAT ABOUT AMOVE FOR

Shane Doan, for that matter I did hear of a move over the summer with Jovanowski ending up being an Islander some salary cap move PHO was tying. Both those guys fill the bill. They r still both productive have leadership and great pedigree, maybe a move like that would pump both them and the team. I would be willing to give up some youth like Bergy, Comeau and Tamby plus some picks for those two

Now Doan I’d bite on. I think he’d take a lot to acquire though, unless the Coyotes were in fire-sale mode again and few other teams could fit the cap hit.

Jovanovski, perhaps. I worry his career would be about to take a Witt-like trajectory, though.

Amazing, Dom...I was going to make the Witt analogy but you beat me to it

Also, if the Coyotes keep making noise, they are hardly likely to sell off talent.

Still think Saku would be best. If Garth gets Saku, Frans is expendable and might draw a mid first round pick. If we can also get a first rounder from Chicago, we can really expand the talent core. A Chicago first rounder, based on this mock draft, would put us in easy striking distance of Jon Merrill, a defenseman recommended by one of our posters. A mid first pick will put us in striking distance of Pulkinnen. And, of course, let’s not forget about Taylor Hall!
