Islanders-Hurricanes [open game thread]

Carolina Hurricanes at New York Islanders, Oct 21, 2009 7:00 PM EDT

Storm chasers: Canes Country

Canes visitor "Raccoon Fink" gets a nod for providing us with an updated crest image for his franchise of choice in the game preview. I pledge to put it to use next time, but tonight the nod to history must continue -- particularly in honor of the NHL finally making Whalers jerseys available again.

I appreciated Fink's gesture in all its spirit; but in case there are any overly sensitive Canes fans drifting by, know this: Not all who respect the Whale hate your kind -- a pawn in the NHL's franchise shuffleboard game like any other fanbase. Believe it or not, some of us just love hockey.

Doug Weight is supposedly healthy enough to play, so we should be spared a Jon Sim appearance on the first line. Other than that, your as-yet-winless game thread begins now...

yea, The NHL offers the Radio feed for free, but its very hard to actually find the links via nhl.com or the Islanders website.

Moulson

With a goal! Well on the bright side it looks like you can put anyone with Moulson – Tavares.

PP Coming up too, lets make it 2-0

Sutton was very nice on that play. Isle’s d-man are getting in deep on the rush.

Roli looks good!

He looks comfortable so far tonight. Absorbing shots, playing the puck tons like he does. So far so good

Nice. I haven’t caught it all, but what I’ve seen was solid.

First period

Isles escape up 1-0 and seem to be playing pretty well despite some running about in their own end. This feels familiar…

WAY too familiar. Worse, Carolina came out flat, so…

Shots on Goal

The Isles have either Led or have been tied in Shots after the 1st Period of every game this year. The two times they were tied in Shots their 2nd period they outshot opponents by 10.

Faceoffs

Anyone notice that the Isles seem to be getting tossed from the faceoff circle quite often?

by Mark D on Oct 21, 2009 8:10 PM EDT reply actions

As long as Okposo is there to win the faceoff for his centre I don’t see the problem. In the playoffs last season I was convinces that the officials didn’t want Zeterburg to take any faceoffs.

OK, all gallows humor aside, this is where they need to show they’ve learned something. Same script so far — will they fold, or will they get their heads and take the game to the Canes? Dumb penalties do not help.

I agree. They should be able to play 60 minutes. They just don’t adjust to the other team stepping it up in the next period.

Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.

by Dominik on Oct 21, 2009 8:44 PM EDT reply actions

I don't get it

If this system is speed heavy, why not have Tambellini and Schremp in and scratch some of the big guys? The Islanders have yet to be pushed around all that Psychically.

by Mark D on Oct 21, 2009 8:45 PM EDT up reply actions

I would like to add my typical even keel position..but… you’re right mostly. lol. I do like Sim..etc. etc. You gotta give them a shot I suppose, you can’t replace heart and smarts. I’m the biggest Richard Park fan out there, lol.

by albeezle on Oct 21, 2009 8:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Probably because Schremp is not terribly fast. This is part of why Rob Schremp Hockey™ doesn’t work that well 5-on-5 in the NHL. Defensemen are smarter and faster, so they can keep up without too much sweat.

by zytsef on Oct 21, 2009 8:50 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m not that big of a Schremp fan anymore. But I’m willing to give him his shot. We have some quality on this team now, so we just need to take our time and feel it out.

He can go to Bridgeport. Injury rehab assignment and all that. Not sure if there’s a time limit on it once it starts, though.

Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.

Conditioning stints never require waivers. I believe they are limited to a certain number of games or period of time. Don’t know that number off the top of my head. As I understand it Ricky’s not quite ready to play real games, though.

The Good and Bad

The Good – Multiple goals from non 1st Liners
PK was 3 for 4
Roloson stopped a shootout chance
Roloson looked sharp, two of the three goals he had no chance on.
Faceoffs finished 44-20

The Bad – PP was 0 for 3 (Carolina came in 24-25 on the PK though)
Another bad 3rd we were outshot 10-6
Tavares Line gets its first minus of the year.
Too many missed quality chances.
