Game 3: Islanders-Bruins [game thread]
New York Islanders at Boston Bruins, Oct 10, 2009 7:00 PM EDT
New York Islanders (0-0-2) at Boston Bruins (1-2-0)
7 p.m. EDT | [enema/acronym bank-like entity] Garden | MSG+, NESN
Bruins SBN compadres: Stanley Cup of Chowder
If you missed it, Trent Hunter's pectoral muscle was reinjured (and torn), landing him on IR. Meanwhile, Doug Weight is out, apparently having re-aggravated the groin. Katie Strang also reports Joel Rechlicz has been called up and will be in the lineup, along with Nate Thompson. And her projected lines (pre-Weight injury):
Moulson-Tavares-Okposo
Bergenheim-Weight-Comeau
Schremp-Bailey-Sim
Rechlicz-Park-Jackman
As expected, Dwayne Roloson is indeed in the net -- and we can count on that, since Hunter won't be in warmups to tag him in the neck. (That sounds like I'm being hard on Hunter; I actually love the guy. Totally platonic, I assure you.)

Jaffe on Hunter's injury:
“He ‘tweaked’ it.” “Tweak” is really an all-purpose word.
Why is the lamp on the floor in seven pieces?
>>"I tweaked it."

My math doesn’t go that high. Do we count DiPietro again this year, or does he have to be healthy first?
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
I think since he’s under contract we count him.
So 2 for Weight, 1 for Hunter, 3 for DiP. 3 games in and 6 mangames lost, but I might be missing someone.
I guess we could add Comeau (“illness”) for one, too.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Botta on Rechlicz call-up
He said: “Guess they want more toughness after Ottawa pushed them around the other night.”
Really? I missed the pushing around. I saw a big predictable hit on Tavares by Volchenkov, a Weight hit from behind on Volchenkov, plus a hockey game. What did I miss?
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Comeau on the PK
Takes it all the way deep into the Bruins zone … then passes it to the slot in the middle of three Bruins. Good, followed by bad.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
The versatile Richard Park
On the 1st PP unit as Okposo drops back to Weight’s spot on the point.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Bergenheim was with Bailey and Schremp on the 2nd unit, btw.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Center Ice providing LI and Bos feeds tonight
So I get to choose Howie and Jaffe and am spared Jack Edwards singing about the American Revolution on NESN.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
That was wild
Bergenheim threw a big hit, and Ference horsecollars Bergie from behind and starts raining punches on him. Martinek came into help since Bergenheim was oblivious. Isles get the PP.
I’m sure Edwards was appalled by something or other.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
...and now we have a 5-on-3
4-minute highsticking double-minor just 22 seconds into the initial PP.
Jaffe mentions how the early weak penalty calls have already set a poor pace to the game.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Gah. No movement on the 5-on-3, Isles fell right into the Bruins’ collapsing triangle.
2:20 of 5-on-4 afterward went a little better, but still nothing.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
More ruffianism
Stuart tryin’ to goad Rechlicz by giving him a few jab facewashes.
Bruins need this. I’m having fun imagining the crowd response if they stunk it up at home again at home?
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
A second succesful PK for the Isles
I ain’t sayin’ or jinxin’ nothing. I hope.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
End of 1st: 0-0
Roloson really had to come up big in the final minute. One insane sequence: Seemed like the B’s had two empty nets on the same chance, yet passed and failed to convert.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Just hoppin in.
How they doin so far? I see it’s scoreless after one. I’d like to jump in and watch but between college football and the Avs game in thirty minutes, I’m afraid the Isles will have to do without me for the night =p
I thought you knew that algebra was all razzamatazz. A Globetrotter always saves the good algebra for the final minutes.
As WebBard noted, they got a lot of shots on. Partly PP aided (they blew a 1:30 5-on-3), but it’s been strong enough so far. Roloson has had a few huge saves.
So many commitments, not enough time :)
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Speaking of...
HUGE toe save by Roloson on Kobasew’s backhand deke.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Sim resurrection! 1-0
PP goal. Schremp to Okposo, Sim lifts the rebound in.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Now if we could just get a few 5on5 goals.
If Okposo stays healthy all year, wow, I’m loving him already
Yes and yes.
They gotta keep this up. If they make it to the third with the lead, they better not sit back.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Shot from Sim’s Office, at the crease.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Heh, yeah he didn’t have to pay the standard price for that goal. I’m sure that thrills Julien.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
“Freddy from New Hampshire, which is in New England.”
Uh, thank you, Howie.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Woo, Bergie & Park
Some sweet work there. Bergenheim has to get his shots off quicker though.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Ha, oh man, that seals it for sure.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Martinek!! 2-0
That was a shot.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Rask looked like he had a wasp in his mask on that one.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
TAVARES!
3-on-1, RIPS it by Rask. Awesome. Wow. Postage stamp.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Come on PP
Keep it going. … not like that.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Gahhh, Meyer
Didn’t need a late penalty like that. Though Savard went down like a feather.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Tavares fickin Kickin ass!!!!
I’m lovin this.
This team is gonna turn the corner. Gonna take some time but you can see it coming along. Bergenheim playin a very hard nosed game as well.
Yes. Awesome. Just awesome. I like that they’ve smelled blood thus far. I love that JT decided to pick his corner and nailed it. We’ll need that.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Good game by JT and Bergenheim so far. Bailey has been pretty absent, though. I’m also pretty impressed with Schremp — he’s making plays out there.
I don’t understand playing Thompson over Tambellini, though.
Yeah, Schremp’s been good. Bailey looks like he’s in a quiet funk. He’ll wake up one of these weeks.
I’m guessing Gordon wanted a center for Weight, and wanted some grit/defense to face the B’s. I wonder if Tambellini and Schremp will ever be in the same lineup together.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Man, 3-nothing headed into the third in Boston. I’m just going to sit back and savor this for a little while.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Off Topic
But since its intermission, anyone else excited that the Nordiques may return? I so miss those jerseys.
ANY topic is on-topic in game threads!
I just stick to the game when I’m the only one here :)
And, yes, I’d love for the Nordiques to come back. I’d love for the return of the Battle of Quebec. If it ever happened, they’d better let them use the name and unis again. Those were beautiful.
While they’re at it, they should re-retire Stastny and Goulet’s numbers.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
They definitely need a new building though. Long road to go there, and a lot of other stuff would have to fall in line.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Well in fairness, it would be rather funny to come to a game thread and see you having a convo with yourself about something other then the game.
“Boy, these beans don’t taste right.”
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
End of 2nd: 3-0 Isles
So, this hasn’t sucked.
Best be prepared for an attempted stampede from the Bruins in the 3rd. This keeps up, they’ll be booing and panicing.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Ugh, if they sit back again…
Gotta kill this penalty off first.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
That Tavares kid looks good….Unfortunately the B’s look awful
by Stanley Cup of Chowder on Oct 10, 2009 8:50 PM EDT reply actions
He's looked good in every game so far.
And yeah, B’s are struggling. Losing Kessel seems to have had a big impact offensively.
we’ll see about that. He wouldn’t be playing now anyways.
by Stanley Cup of Chowder on Oct 10, 2009 8:53 PM EDT up reply actions
I almost don’t want to see the B’s struggle early because I don’t want to hear any credit given to Kessel.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Yeah, what the hell’s going on? I mean, I love it, but I thought for sure this would be their wake-up game.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
I obviously have no answer for that. I am baffled.

Brendan Witt looks like Chris Simon w/ that hair

I know. It is his talisman. He sucked last year without it. It’s not so much mullet as it is surfer/metal/hippie hybrid dude.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Nice, smart decisions here. Not doing too much. Not sitting back.
Now I’m getting greedy and picturing this with Frans Nielsen in the lineup, too.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
If your going to be greedy…
How about next season, a healthy DiP, Tavares with a year, a bigger De Haan ready for the NHL, Moulson and maybe Schremp having proven themselves, Okposo and Bailey with another year of experince.
I’ll take it. Along with Volchenkov via free agency?
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
You know, I thought the FAs this year were going to be pretty bad when Snow started with Roloson. But so far Roloson has been outstanding. Moulson and Schremp both look like good pickups and when you add that to Streit, Snow might be one of the best GMs at picking pieces off of the scrap heap.
Yeah he’s been pretty judicious so far. I think the real test comes when there’s actual expectation to win and put the final pieces in, but I’m certainly happy.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Still so funny to see Chara mean and able to skate
He’s come a long, long way.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Savard: 3-1
Shit. Nice shot.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Penalty?
The new NHL no-more-touch-him-after-dump-in call?
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Oh my GOD. It was Moulson on Chara. That was ridiculous. That’s the Chara “skating” ability I remember from way back. Pathetic.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Sweet PK
Bend, don’t break. Attaboy Rolli.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
GAAA! And then that. :steam:
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
So put him with … Meyer, heh.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Again
Two of the three games, the Isles lose 3rd period leads. All three of the teams were playoff vets, definitely showing the Isles are a young team that just can’t close it out.
They start running around once the pressure builds up. Good god, I wanted to hear the Bruins fans boo.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
What. The.
Running around in their own zone, chasing. I don’t get it. The sitting in the shell thing don’t work.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Um, OK boys.
Still gotta play. Even 1 point ain’t in the bag.
Rolli’s got to be pissed. He did his part. Did he see any of the goals?
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Wooden sticks
I kind of like what Reichlicz said about the one-piece sticks. I pretty much hate them. Thinking of going back to wooden ones, but Bauer doesn’t make my favorite Supreme sticks anymore.
FML.
Me too. The one-piece thing is a scourge. Can’t believe they get kids (or their parents) buying ’em, the way they break. I still have Easton Classic shafts and rotate Koho blades in.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Ha
Schremp sets up Sutton beautifully, and Sutton’s like, “Now what?”
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Shootout
Send in the Schremp.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
MSG graphic
“Islanders: Earned point in each of first three games, first time since 2000-01.” (Or was it 02? I already forgot.)
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
That’s right. The Osgood 11-1-1 start or whatever.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
I dunno. Not much jT in OT, either. Looked tired? Too much pressure?
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
That was goddamned miserable
First 50 minutes were cool, though.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
I think the post was it. Didn’t MacTavish replace him for a shootout once, or am I mixing up my crazy Canadians?
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
In Fairness, MacTavish did play NHL hockey until the late 90s without a helmet. Take from that what you will.
That was one protective afro, though.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Ah, cool. Thanks. Right Canadian, wrong American.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
If the game were two periods, I’d buy it.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
The 2009-10 New York Islanders
Undefeated. Ish.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
There is no NYI in win. Yet.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Definitely. That’s what kills me about this game: There’s been a lot of good signs, but now they’ve got this mental voodoo working against them. I don’t want Witt saying they have to take their foot off the gas, either. This collapsing, panic, running around thing doesn’t work. Roloson didn’t see any of those goals, and he was screened on a few great saves before that.
Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
Yeah
They just fall apart at the end of games. The B’s took over tonight after getting dominated for 2 and a half periods. That can’t happen. They have to keep up the intensity. They didn’t, and once the Bruins got one they started panicking and the Bruins took advantage of it.
So...
Okay, the game against the Pens and the Bruins we had big leads and lost them. But despite the 3rd Period tonight, I think if you said 3 games into the season the Islanders would nearly beat the Bruins, Penguins and Sens (all three teams being playoff Calibre) you’d be pretty happy.
Obviously its a young team and is going to have growing pains. I say its better to struggle now then to start off hot, cool off and then have to figure out what needs to be changed halfway into the season. They are a good team, they just need to learn to finish games. All three games they have been outshot in the 3rd period, and most good teams finish off the Bruins during that PP when its 3-0.
Tavares and Okposo are hitting it off, Moulson and Schremp both have flashes, there’s not much more you can ask from this team then to just finish the games. For some silly reason I have faith that Gordon’s going to pound that idea into their heads eventually.
I buy that. The Gordon thing, too. I mean what better example can he use for them than this one?
“Stop kissing your lucky stars, stop just being happy to be in the lead, stop hoping your way to the end, and play 60 minutes of the hockey that got you here in the first place.”
