Game 3: Islanders-Bruins [game thread]

New York Islanders at Boston Bruins, Oct 10, 2009 7:00 PM EDT

New York Islanders (0-0-2) at Boston Bruins (1-2-0)
7 p.m. EDT | [
enema/acronym bank-like entity] Garden | MSG+, NESN
Bruins SBN compadres:
Stanley Cup of Chowder

If you missed it, Trent Hunter's pectoral muscle was reinjured (and torn), landing him on IR. Meanwhile, Doug Weight is out, apparently having re-aggravated the groin. Katie Strang also reports Joel Rechlicz has been called up and will be in the lineup, along with Nate Thompson. And her projected lines (pre-Weight injury):

Moulson-Tavares-Okposo
Bergenheim-Weight-Comeau
Schremp-Bailey-Sim
Rechlicz-Park-Jackman

As expected, Dwayne Roloson is indeed in the net -- and we can count on that, since Hunter won't be in warmups to tag him in the neck. (That sounds like I'm being hard on Hunter; I actually love the guy. Totally platonic, I assure you.)

Jaffe on Hunter's injury:

“He ‘tweaked’ it.” “Tweak” is really an all-purpose word.

Why is the lamp on the floor in seven pieces?

So, three games in and how many man games lost to injury already?

My math doesn’t go that high. Do we count DiPietro again this year, or does he have to be healthy first?

I think since he’s under contract we count him.

So 2 for Weight, 1 for Hunter, 3 for DiP. 3 games in and 6 mangames lost, but I might be missing someone.

I guess we could add Comeau (“illness”) for one, too.

Botta on Rechlicz call-up

He said: “Guess they want more toughness after Ottawa pushed them around the other night.”

Really? I missed the pushing around. I saw a big predictable hit on Tavares by Volchenkov, a Weight hit from behind on Volchenkov, plus a hockey game. What did I miss?

Comeau on the PK

Takes it all the way deep into the Bruins zone … then passes it to the slot in the middle of three Bruins. Good, followed by bad.

That was wild

Bergenheim threw a big hit, and Ference horsecollars Bergie from behind and starts raining punches on him. Martinek came into help since Bergenheim was oblivious. Isles get the PP.

I’m sure Edwards was appalled by something or other.

Roloson really had to come up big in the final minute. One insane sequence: Seemed like the B’s had two empty nets on the same chance, yet passed and failed to convert.

Just hoppin in.

How they doin so far? I see it’s scoreless after one. I’d like to jump in and watch but between college football and the Avs game in thirty minutes, I’m afraid the Isles will have to do without me for the night =p

As WebBard noted, they got a lot of shots on. Partly PP aided (they blew a 1:30 5-on-3), but it’s been strong enough so far. Roloson has had a few huge saves.

by johnmac7512 on Oct 10, 2009 9:51 PM EDT reply actions

Definitely. That’s what kills me about this game: There’s been a lot of good signs, but now they’ve got this mental voodoo working against them. I don’t want Witt saying they have to take their foot off the gas, either. This collapsing, panic, running around thing doesn’t work. Roloson didn’t see any of those goals, and he was screened on a few great saves before that.

Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.

by Dominik on Oct 10, 2009 9:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah

They just fall apart at the end of games. The B’s took over tonight after getting dominated for 2 and a half periods. That can’t happen. They have to keep up the intensity. They didn’t, and once the Bruins got one they started panicking and the Bruins took advantage of it.

by johnmac7512 on Oct 10, 2009 9:57 PM EDT up reply actions

So...

Okay, the game against the Pens and the Bruins we had big leads and lost them. But despite the 3rd Period tonight, I think if you said 3 games into the season the Islanders would nearly beat the Bruins, Penguins and Sens (all three teams being playoff Calibre) you’d be pretty happy.

Obviously its a young team and is going to have growing pains. I say its better to struggle now then to start off hot, cool off and then have to figure out what needs to be changed halfway into the season. They are a good team, they just need to learn to finish games. All three games they have been outshot in the 3rd period, and most good teams finish off the Bruins during that PP when its 3-0.

Tavares and Okposo are hitting it off, Moulson and Schremp both have flashes, there’s not much more you can ask from this team then to just finish the games. For some silly reason I have faith that Gordon’s going to pound that idea into their heads eventually.

by Mark D on Oct 10, 2009 9:54 PM EDT reply actions

I buy that. The Gordon thing, too. I mean what better example can he use for them than this one?

“Stop kissing your lucky stars, stop just being happy to be in the lead, stop hoping your way to the end, and play 60 minutes of the hockey that got you here in the first place.”
